Pick a Pearl Advice

I'm so glad I found this thread. I've never heard of pick-a-pearl I don't remember seeing this anywhere on our last trip. :confused3 But now that I know about it I definitely want to try it out. Sounds like a lot of fun! :teeth:

It is amazing! And....there is another thread on the boards that is quite long with photos of many pieces people have gotten there. :goodvibes

If it wasn't mentioned on a previous page, they also have a location near Yacht & Beach Club near or on the beach path area.

On the long thread it was mentioned that DTD was a bit more 'pushy' in buying something to go with it. At Japan we have taken our pearl in just the baggie several times.

Some settings can be pricey - especially with the price of gold these days. I normally pick a very simple 'sweep' type of sterling setting for a ring. I think the most I ever spent all in was $65, if even that much. I don't wear rings & only a medic-alert bracelet, so rings work the best for me!

If you are at Islands of Adventure, they did have a location around the right side of the park near the back - I believe in the Lost Continent area? I really don't remember - but we did buy one there! Not sure if still there or not.

I *think* the Y&B location is the same company as at DTD and yes, they are very pushy and very expensive. I will never go back there again after how they treated me that day and after my correspondences with the company President. It was horrendous.

Can someone tell me where the Pick a Pearl in DTD is located? I didn't see anything listed on maps. :confused3 I will only visit DTD for that only and would hate to spend a lot of time finding it.

Do it at Epcot. Much much much better experience and the prices are excellent.

Oh I have done this a whole bunch of times, it's a lot of fun! I pick the hairiest one I see, always served me well. Last time I got a large gold one (so big it didn't fit in the cage I got!) as well as a large-ish blue one which sits tightly in my Cinderella cage.

I looked online and found some beautiful cages for my daughters, thanks for the tip.
I also found a beautiful ring setting I would like. We will do this in Japan, will they drill the pearl you buy if you bring your own setting? From doing this in the past, it looks like it is stuck on w/superglue, which having two kids, I am an EXPERT with :rotfl2:

:goodvibes

Yes, def pick a pearl at Epcot :goodvibes
DTD is just not the same. There is a large ceremony at the Japan store!

I decided to get mine set in DTD as I fell in love with a necklace setting there. I didn't find them rude - in fact, they had no problem that I picked my 7.5mm gold pearl at Epcot and actually commented on how beautiful it was. This was just last week, so maybe they have new staff at DTD, or have been told not to be so rude!

Can't wait to do this! My two girls are going to pick and then we'll have them made into a pendant for me. :) A little gift from me, to them and then back to me. :thumbsup2

Just got back my daughter and I did Pick a Pearl in Epcot.

End of night not as many oysters to pick from as in the morning.

But ended up with two white 7 1/4 mm.

Tried to pick one with blue in shell because I heard it might indicate a blue tinted pearl. Nope but it is still pretty.

I also purchased my cages on ebay. A cinderella carriage cage and a rose cage. The girl polishing the pearl said she had never seen the rose cage before.

Paid 14.99 to pick the pearl not including tax. Cant remember what that came to but a great time.

I have a pearl ring that I inherited. I would like to replace the pearl. If I picked-a-pearl would they put it in my setting?

I am not sure if they will put them in an outside setting (other than the cages obviously), but they do drill them for the rings - at least mine are drilled. (I have one that is a tiny bit loose & 'spins' on the post - need to take that one back & get it reglued).

Ok, previous to our last trip this past Feb I read on another thread that you had to pick the smallest, ugliest and hairiest of the shells.

So, I surprised DD5 and DW with a 'pick' for each one. DD chose thd one that she liked the most, but DW followed the Dis advice (which I told her), and she got an 8mm, which is pretty big. DD5's turned out to be a 7mm.

I've read that picking that way you get the best results.

Good luck!

Hehehehe - My other half swears by this method!!! We always try to find the puniest, worst looking oyster in the tank....... usually works out well, last time we ended up with a 9.25mm.....

My DD 4 also picked "little and ugly" oysters...got TWINS on her first one!! :thumbsup2 DD 8 has always gotten gorgeous 7.5mm or bigger pearls with beautiful colors. I wonder why that little trick works so well? We have not yet gotten any of our pearls put into settings....someday... ;)
I am at Silver Dollar City in Branson MO...my google search brought me here. I was at WDW and didn't even look at the pearl boiths in April. Yesterday after reading this I hit the smallest and thickest oyester and hit twin white small pearls. The next one was ugly and thick, not as thick, and got a matching white pearl. Going to get a pair of earrings and a necklace settings and giving to boyfriend's mom for Christmas. Thanks for the tips!

I've found this is a reliable company to get your loose pearls set, they have lot's of options--> www.thepearlsetters.com
