Photos of snake at WL!!

My wife is very uncomfortable with this WDW/snake situation. She fears snakes to the point that if someone uses the word around her, she freaks out. She will steer clear of aisles in stores that have the fake rubber snakes. I could go on... But she is going to brave Fantasmic! Of course, her eyes will likely be closed during the parts with the giant snake.

I'm okay with snakes as long as they're not poisonous...Of course, I don't really know by looking at them...I guess I need to educate myself on the poisonous snakes of Fla.

To quote a famous archeologist..."Snakes...why did it have to be snakes?" :rotfl2:

I hate to add to the snake hysteria, but when we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge last year we were on the ground floor, and one day we found a small dead snake in our room! My kids found it; they picked it up and started swinging it around, thinking it was a toy!!! We asked housekeeping to dispose of it for us, but it sat outside of our hotel room door for a day. Luckily it happened on the last full day we were there because I could not bring myself to walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night after that, for fear of what I might step on in the dark!

when I was in college we camped a FW.....I never gave a thought to snakes, spiders, any creatures..... :rotfl:

Don't know if I could ever camp there again after seeing pics and stories like these on the Boards!! :scared1: :faint:

Why am I not like regular women ? I love reptiles, snakes and mice and I never had any of these growing up :confused3 I dint think it was a mocassin cos it didnt seem very fat. That snake from photo 1 looked long and slender like a racer. If its any consolation they are terrified of humans and will try to eascape if cornered. They are very nifty and strong though and thrash about something wild. I just couldnt calm the racer down at POFQ. I just wanted to kiss him :confused3 I should have known from experience dh does the same ;)

I saw a snake at WL - swimming in the pool!!!

I was there in November, and I went for a late night swim. Lo and behold, there was a snake swimming around the pool near the bridge in the back, unable to get out. Disney's wildlife people came, and one of them went into the pool and caught the snake in a brown bag. They said it was a "brown banded" or a "brown bandit" snake, which I guess may be a brown water snake. They said it was a common one to find in pools.

And did I go swimming after they left? ABSOULTELY! :teeth:

I will try to find the photos of the snake if I can ........!

There are Black racers and other harmless ( if there is such a thing) snakes here at my apt complex in daytona. Now, being from Anaheim, snakes were a big adjustment for me. No snakes in Anaheim..but snakes all ov er fl. I see the black racers every now and then but they just scoot away from me. One reason why you probbaly saw that snake and one reason I see the black racer occassionally here is they are one of the few snakes that hunt for food during the day. One good thing about Disneyland over WDW..no snakes..lol except for the huge cobra in Indian Jones attraction :)

I'm glad I didn't see this thread about 2 weeks ago! I just came back from staying at WL and I would have been scared of everything if I had seen this first. I was all over the resort - the pool, the beach, the boat docks. I even sat at a table next to the long grass near the beach. I doubt I would have if I had seen these pictures before I left. I didn't seen anything but the little lizard things all over the place - and they were bad enough! :flower:

In sll the times that I have been to WDW, I have never seen a snake at all. I guess I have been very lucky. I am not a fan of snakes at all but my son would probably try to go over and pick it up. Hope that never happens.

:love: ::MickeyMo :love:

I'd rather have 10 black racers outside than ONE Florida-size cockroach (palmetto bug?) or Camel Cricket (ahhhh! I wet myself) inside.

Two years ago I scooted a black racer out of the SAB area and back towards the lagoon. I didn't think it needed to be in the pool with the kiddies. I like snakes so I didn't have a problem encouraging it to go a different way! ;)

There is a black racer that lives in the flowerbed next to my front porch. Ever so often, he pokes his head up at the edge of the porch and looks at me, but he never comes up on the porch (at least I haven't seen him do that). I've named him Indy (snakes, why did it have to be snakes). I have an odd sense of humor.

Saw 2 black racers at Animal Kingdom when I was there back in July. One was on the walkway near the entrance to Tarzan Rocks. It slithered quickly across the walkway and into the brush. The other was at the entrance of the park and a security guard was shooing it back into the brush.
I used to be terrified of snakes but have become used to them and don't freak out. Don't like them much either. We have a few black racers that come in my yard at times.

Why did you have to mention snakes? :earseek: I never thought about snakes at WDW even though is seem pretty obvious that they would have them. Now I am going to be looking down everywhere I go. Glad I change our ressie from WL to Poly. Please tell me they do not like the Poly and prefer WL. :rotfl:

If you're close enough to get a reasonably good look, there's one thing common to poisonous snakes. The head is usually triangular in shape. The nose forms one rounded corner and the two venom sacs in the "cheeks" form the other two rounded corners of this triangle. Behind the head, the first part of the body is narrower than the "cheeks" so it looks like the snake has a "neck" after its larger head (quite a bit larger than a nonpoisonous snake's head which has no venom sacs). There are also nonpoisonous snakes with this head shape but this may help you to avoid the poisonous ones.

If you remember the triangular "warning" shape of the head, being able to identify all the different kinds of snakes is less of a big deal.

If someone is bitten by a snake, describing its head shape and markings (for caregivers later) is important for the best treatment. So pay attention to the snake's appearance when you do see a snake. And of course, if you don't know for sure that it's safe to go near, stay away. At places like WDW, call for help and animal control will take it away.

We were at VWL a few weeks ago. I can remember looking out from our 4th floor balcony and wondering how many snakes come near the ground floor porches! But then we had a frog perch on our sliding door window every night! We saw a small snake scurry off the sidewalk near the bus pick up/drop off.

A few years ago, there was a snake in the Lazy River at Blizzard Beach. Ugh-I have a huge fear of them and I think I was off my tube and out of the water in less than a second.

Lisa P. - Thank you for clarifying for everyone about the shape of the head.

We have a black snack that lives in our yard as well. I just ignore her for the most part. One day I was sitting on the front porch and I made a noise/vibration by sitting my glass of iced tea down...well apparently is startled the snake(whom I didn't even know was there) because I when I looked up, the snake had raised it's head up and about 3 inches of it's "neck" to look at me and see what the noise was, LOL! They have notoriously bad eyesight and it reminded me a bit of Mr. Magoo, LOL! :earseek: A few flicks of her tongue and she bolted back in the bushes. I, too, went inside. :goodvibes

I figure that snake is as interested in us as we are in the things she eats. ;)

I can never move to Florida! I had to put my legs up on my chair reading these posts. Snakes creep me out. We saw a snake at EPCOT a few years ago in front of the Rose and Crown Pub and several at WL. If I were on the ground floor I would never open my patio doors. Our room there during our last trip looked out over a funky little pond and I looked down from our 4th floor balcony and wondered how many snakes travel in and out of there.

Does any one remember a few years ago when folks on the DIS talked about snaked getting into the floor level rooms at the Beach Club? I haven't heard anything recently. Maybe the construction of BCV ran them all out. :faint:
