been on the phone to Disney to add a room request and they started trying to sell me memory maker

I got a little confused. Previously I have scanned photos to our magic bands then at the end on the trip we decide within x days if we want to download.

She was saying if I don't get memory maker in advance I won't be able to get photos for the first 3 days

I don't even know the difference between photo pass and memory make!

Photopass is no more. The CM you spoke to was incorrect. You do NOT have to buy Memory Maker in advance, however you do get it at a discounted price if you buy in advance. And if you buy at the advance price, any pictures taken within 3 days of purchase will not be available to download. However, you can easily have pictures taken and go to www.mydisneyphotopass.com after the event in order to download them and pay the full Memory Maker price. Or even buy it at the parks, while you are there.

ETA: You will have 45 days after the picture was taken in order to download your pictures/buy Memory Maker.
