Photo Sharing: Ultra Wide Angle

Over the past couple of weeks I have enjoyed quite a bit of success selling statue/bust collectibles on e-bay. In fact, things have gone so well over the past few weeks I am fortunate enough to be able to purchase a Nikon D700 and the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8.

Looking forward to taking to WDW in about a month and a half. Hopefully I will come back with some nice shots to share. :cool1: :cool1:

Just got back from Colorado. Here's a shot from Red Rocks outside Denver.

WOW! That's absolutely Beautiful!! What kind of camera did you use, did you use a filter.. the colors are Great, & the clouds stand out!! I use an olympus c-5060 wide zoom, it's an oldie but takes good photos. i have never purchased any lenses for it. i am thinking about purchasing a telephoto 3x lens & polorizing filter. i keep jumping back & forth with buying a new camera or just upgrading mine. Nice photo!! :)

Glad you like the shot. I shoot a Nikon D90 and have sevarl lenses. I shot this image with a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. I love wide angle for landscape.

Nice! Is it Topaz, tonemapped, or something else?

Scott

Scott,
This is a true HDR from three exposures in Photomatix. I then finished the image in Lightroom. In Photomatix I keep it pretty simple and really watch out for any halos. My tone mapped image looks kinda flat, but that's where LR comes into play. Contrast, vibrance, and curves finish the image off with some sharpening and a vignette. I really liked this image a bit darker than normal, which is unusual for me. Thanks for the positive comment.

I see; sounds a lot like what the way I've been doing things for a while. Ever since I learned how to generally avoid halos in Photomatix, I've been trying to eliminate them as well. As best I can tell, they can result from the "wrong" relationship between the Gamma and Luminosity sliders -- if Luminosity is set higher than Gamma (i.e., farther to the right), they're more likely (but not guaranteed) to appear. Is that your experience as well, or have you found something else at play too?

I rarely touch the Gamma slider. I agree with on the Luminosity slider. I've found that I can minimize halos by keeping the smoothing slider as far to the right as possible and the same with the Highlights Smoothness slider. I then tweak the micro-smoothing slightly.

For the most part I leave Strength at 100, color saturation around 30 - 40, Microcontrast at 10 and smoothing in 8 - 9 area. I then work on the white point to keep from clipping highlights. My big adjustments come in Luminosity and Highlight/Mico smoothing. My goal is to get a somewhat flattish image that I know will pop once I add curves, vibrance, etc. in LR. I've found that I get more pleasing colors this way than trying to do it all in Photomatix.

A new shot of an old gas station interior. I love old buildings like this. Makes me wonder what conversations happened here just 25 or 30 years ago.
