As a 70 year old grandmother who loves to take pictures and look at other's pictures. What is HDR ? All I can think of is High Def Resolution.

It means High Dynamic Range. Basically they are using a program to take anywhere from 3 photos on up at different exposures and combining them. Usually when you take a photo you have to choose your back round or your foreground (in the simplest terms) for your exposure. When people do HDR they are putting those exposure together to get the whole range. Some can be very subtle while some are quite dramatic. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the explanation. I would love to learn to do that, and am considering a camera course at the local community college. Do you think that would be a good idea? At present I have a Sony DSC-H5 Camera. Not really fancy, but not a point and shoot either. I probably could get something else, but haven't even figured out all the things this one does.

I'm also looking into HDR.. among all kinds of things photo related.. I'm such a rookie!!!

DiVine at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Used Nikon 18-200VR at 200mm and Nikon SB-600 speedlight set at -1 power and balanced fill flash which created some nice catchlights. More information by clicking on the photo for its flickr page.
