Cool spring water.

mrcricket, I can see you captured the flow of the water, which makes me think that you used a long shutter speed. But what puzzles me is that the Koi fishes (?) look neatly sharp! so to "freeze" them you must have used a fast shutter speed...

I'm confused :goodvibes

do you mind sharing the secret? did you take 2 pics of the same scene and mixed them in photoshop or what? :D

Well you're right on one account, I did use a slow shutter speed to capture the waterfall. On the fish, they really aren't that sharp. I took multiple shots (15-20) of this and picked the one that had the best fish image. Most of my shots of the fish were VERY BLURRY. But I got lucky and grabbed one where the fish was kinda sharp. It's still a bit soft, but because of the reflection and distortion of the water I think it works. But I wish I'd shot a few with really fast shutter so I'd have really sharp fish, but I did not. Lesson learned. Next time I will shoot two shots and combine in PS. But this shot is not that. It's one shot.

One other thing is I used a polarized filter to cut the reflections down so I could capture the rocks and fish under the water. That's one of the things PS can't replicate. Every outdoor photographer should have a polarizer in their bag.

well you did a great job! those fishes did a good job at posing for the pic too XD
having in mind that you used a long shutter speed, had those fishes quite sharp and the moving water that blurrs things from your angle of view ... it turned out great!
If polarising filters weren't that expensive I would already have a couple of them for each lens, they're great! Until I get those filters I'll have to stick to experimenting with sunglasses I guess :lmao:

yours and the other's pics are awesome, I enjoy taking a look at them everyday :D

I'm almost embarrassed to post my picture here. All of y'all here are such wonderful photographers! This was from my son's 1st trip to WDW this past December. On our 2nd night there, I lost my p&s camera! :scared1: Disney paid for a taxi for my husband to go buy me another camera. He knew I had been wanting something nicer, so he came back with a Nikon D3100. This is my 1st DSLR, so I basically just shot on auto for the rest of our trip. I'm now trying to really learn the camera before our next trip!

Welcome new Nikon shooter!!! Great 1st pic!! :thumbsup2

Thank you so much! I have to tell you - I've looked at this whole thread and you have some truly beautiful photographs on here! I'm excited to start learning how to really use my Nikon and, hopefully, I'll have some pretty pics to post here after our upcoming land/sea Disney vacation.
