With no VR, and the narrow depth of field, I have trouble getting perfect focus with the 85/1.8 wide open... but when I do manage to get it, it is quite amazing:

I'm still somewhat new to digital photo manipulation with programs like ViewNx, Lightroom, and Photoshop.

The black border around your pictures is reminiscent of my days in art school where we were required to print our work with a full frame negative holder that added a black band around the image.

I looked through Lightroom for this function but could not find it. How is this done?

I do the border in a Photoshop plugin called Topaz Adjust. They have some free trial downloads if you care to give them a go.
