You use your stateroom key like you would use a Photopass. They also have facial recognition.
When you first board, get your whole group in the boarding photo, that is what starts the facial recognition. Try to swipe the same stateroom when taking pictures throughout the cruise, since the CD is meant for just one stateroom (but you might be able to combine two if you have a family traveling together, you have to ask/beg at Shutters).
Throughout the trip, check the kiosks to make sure your photos are showing on your account. You might find strangers because of facial recognition, but you can delete them. If you are missing a photo, find the printed version in Shutters (they still print them) and give it to the CM at the desk with your stateroom number and ask them to add it.
They have Shutters photographers at various events, but mainly they have staged photographs with different backgrounds each evening. Because we bought the photo CD, we did a lot of extra photos like jumping ones, casual ones, etc. We felt like we got professional studio type photos without paying a sitting fee.
Shutters has an online release, so you can print the photos when you get home, or use them in slide shows, etc. Our holiday card has been a Shutters photo the past few years. Much easier to carry home a CD than a bunch of printed photos.
If you are on a special cruise like the Med or Baltics, they have Shutters photographers at the main tourist stops (but remember to take off your DCL stickers, we forgot and they look silly!).
You cannot get borders on the DCL photo CDs like you can with Photopass because you get it when you leave the ship.
You can purchases packages of 5x7 and 8x10 printed photos. Just be careful choosing sizes, because they add a lot of specialty borders (which you cannot get on the photo CD). If you buy a package and don't use it all you can get a refund. If you want to upgrade it during the cruise, you can do that as well.
