Photo Assignment September '07: Action

This was at a criterium bike race last weekend actually sponsored by my team and this is one of my teammates. I have 2 hobbies. It's obvious which one I was doing on this day......

Nice Picture! I work at a triathlon specialty store, and I am learning more about cycling every day. Have you ever heard of the Tour du Toona, located in Altoona, PA by chance? I know we get people from all over the world for that race, and I love watching it. It's held every year in the last week of July, and my house is on the race course for the one leg each year. Very fun! My employee usually hosts Team Lipton, and I work with a girl who used to ride for Team Aquafina. Ok, side track.....again, nice pic! ;) :thumbsup2

All of these photo's are gorgeous.. I wish I could learn how to do them..maybe one day

The idea of these photo assignments is to go out and use your camera. Learn how it works and what settings do what.

We just give you a subject idea, you do all the other stuff.

Take inspiration from others. Then put it to use with your own camera. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Trial and error. Keep learning and keep taking pictures. If your not sure about something or have a pic that didn't come out the way you wanted, post it here and there are more than a few good people that come to this board that would be more than happy to give out advise and help you get better.

So go out, take some pictures and have fun. :cool1:

I actually am a bit familiar with the Tour du Toona but that would be the extent of it. I do know someone who has raced it in fact. Very popular indeed.

As far as the photo, thanks for the comments. I like to use the pan technique at these events and attempt a tack sharp upper body/face with motion blur elsewhere. Sometimes the hard part to deal with is the backgrounds you are stuck with since they are typically held at strange locales. This one wasn't too bad but I've shot some with dumpsters and port-a-johns in the background!

Went to a Gymkhana and got a few shots this weekend.

Shooting something that covers so much ground so quickly was much harder than I thought it would be. The competitors were only in the arena for ~30 seconds each.

Fun day in the Miami waves!

Thanks for the encouragement. I took the dogs outside tonite after work and and tried to shoot them playing and running. You will see my dogs alot since my kids have grown and moved on :)

I looked at a few of the shots here, wrote down the info then went out back and played. Here are my first attempt at actions. Comments always welcome

Well done Kelly. I like this shot. Beautiful dog. Great action. Even some some depth of field with the fence being slightly out of focus.

Glad to see that you decided to get in on the action (no pun indended,,,, ok ok, pun intended :goodvibes ).

Keep up the great work. That goes for everyone. Keep those camera's working.

pisco, i don't think you could have done much better than shot number 2, framing is great and really pulls your eye and the concentration on the girl's face and stance of the horse really tell the story... i like the way the gate intersects the tail and front foot too and the flying clouds of dust...great job imo

I caught this last night using the world famous point, click and pray method.

Alright, so I realize that this sequence of "action" shots isn't what I wanted it to be, but it almost got us kicked off the golf course so you'll have to bear with me.

What I wanted was the photo of the moment a golf club strikes the ball. Cool shot, I thought. So I set up the 30D, 50mm f1.8 lens and my shutter release cable on the 6th hole of the local golf course. The guy who was going to hit this nice clean shot absolutely flubbed the shot and sent dirt flying forward (thankfully not sideways). I also realized that my camera would need to take about 40 frames per second to pull this shot off anyways. When the Ranger realized that the group in front of us got too far ahead, he came over and told us we were playing "too slow" and had to speed it up. I corrected him and told him that we were in fact playing fast and that I was taking pictures which made it seem slow. He was not amused. We were lucky to be able to finish the round.

So here are the shots I got. Not what I wanted, but at least they are in focus.

Thanks so much for the kind comments Jann. This was a real learning experience for me as I think these are the only keepers out of over 1000 shots taken.
