PHM 2015-In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers

My plans are for P90X on Saturday w/ a group for work. Sunday we will be having Easter Brunch @ Fleming's Steakhouse and then I'll have my W8D3 run in the afternoon.

Oh I just started P90X3 and I am loving it! I use it as my cross training and noticed that a lot of the exercises I do regularly as part of my PT are incorporated into his workouts!

Whew...finally caught back up on my own PTR! I love how you girls are so chatty and love to share/support! Now to VENT a little...and maybe lick my wounds! I had a terrible experience with the doctor the other day and it has taken me a few days to recover from the blow... A few weeks ago I decided that it was time to go talk to a foot/ankle doctor about my reoccurring/persistent shin issues, maybe the cause had to lie within my feet. Tuesday, was the day and with nervousness (along with a strange gut feeling I was not going to get answers) I went. I have to say this doctor is prompt, because right on time I was whisked back to a room where I met with the PA where I explained my dilemma, problems, and what I wanted from this appointment. Without asking too many questions, he sent me back to x-ray and less than 10 minutes later came back and told me there was nothing wrong from the x-rays (duh, I knew that). So he started going down a checklist on things to do for shin splints, all which I have done and are doing. Again, I asked him could it be something with my shoes or my feet in general. I basically shoved my shoes in his face and asked should I be wearing these? He ignored me and then gave me THE LECTURE…basically telling me that I am a 40 something overweight female who really has no business running in the first place that maybe I should be listening to my body and if it has been over a year of shin splints that it was time to give up with the notion of running. Again, I shoved my shoes in his face and asked him to look at my feet…which he did not because he wanted to but because I basically demanded it. His verdict was that maybe I should were a neutral shoe that I tend to be somewhat flat footed. HUH, that was not what the sports medicine doctor told me (and the running store) last July when I developed the stress fracture and again he LECTURED again about maybe I should listen to my body and not run. I gave up in defeat trying to get him to understand what I wanted and needed from him, cursing myself that I did not go to the run store in Austin when I had a chance and leaving with $50 less in my pocket and holding back tears. He did give me a prescription for PT sessions, which I don't need because I am not injured at the moment plus told me they could do an orthotic shoe fitting if I wanted to run in those... So here I am again...shin issues and no answers. I will be in the Dallas area in a few weeks so I am going to look for a running store with a gait anaylsis computer.

Holy cow what a jerk! I say got to the PT but find one who specializes in running. Mine does and really has helped with me issues. I also see my chiropractor and it has helped me a lot as well

I hope you get answers and some more sympathetic doctors.

Tammie

You need to fire that dr and find another. Is it a podiatrist or an orthopedist? You need an orthopedist that specializes in sports medicine. DS17 had a stress reaction between his tibia and his fibula. You could not see it in an x-ray, we had a non contrast MRI done.
I would suggest talking to your local running club, college with a cross country team, etc. See who they use for sports related injuries.

What brand and style of shoes are you wearing? How many miles are on them?
I have shin issues and I was wearing New Balance minimus then Asics GT 1000's but was still having issues. I switched to Brooks Ravenna after reading a lot about the way I run and feel. They have really made a huge difference.

And he's a butt hat!! Don't you listen to him!! Lots of people of different sizes run. Lots of people who run have injuries. DS17 is 5'9" and weighs 135, he has nursed a stress reaction in the leg and deep bruise (almost stress reaction) in his foot. Should he not run?

Yeah, I'll echo everyone else...time for a new doctor. I'm not sure about where you go, but where I go there are small biographies of each of the doctors, so when I had to see one for knee issues a few weeks back I picked the one whose biography indicated that she was an avid marathon runner. I feel like if you see a runner their first instinct won't be to have you stop running forever...maybe for awhile to let the inflammation subside, but I doubt they'd tell you to give it up completely.

What kind of shoes are you running in now? When I saw my doc way back when, she told me I was kind of flat footed as well and recommended a $25 pair of orthodics - I took out the factor inserts that came with my shoes (Brooks Adrenalines) and put in the orthodics, which are called PowerSteps. They COMPLETELY fixed my problem. So for me it was all in the shoes. After that I started adding strength training to my regimen and was able to ditch the orthodics a couple of years later and run pain-free without them.

Check out this video on Runner's World about shin splints...might give you some stuff to look into with strength training, flexibility, shoes, etc. He specifically says that you want shoes that have good arch support. The video they link to at the end (IronStrength) is the one I used when I first started strength training:

Good luck!!!!!

Thanks girls for all the support...I was really down on Tuesday after this little doctor visit and I think that is what kept me away from DIS for the last couple of days...but, I am not letting what he said to me stop me. I just have to figure out how work through this...I know I can run 10 miles so I can do PHM I just have to get there first...

The doctor I saw last summer for my shin splint caused stress fracture was one of the best in the country for sports injuries (he is part of the doctor team for the USA Ski Team). But he really does not work with feet and ankles...so I knew he was really out of the question for what I wanted in this visit. So I called around to all the foot/ankle doctors in down (3 of them) and this was the only doctor that also looks at the foot/ankle through a sports medicine lens...no more choices as to what to do with the doctor thing. I suppose I could got to the PT and get the inserts for my shoes...

I wear Brooks Adrenaline and only have about 100 miles on my current pair of shoes...and I only wear them to run in. I also have a pair of Brooks Adrenaline for everyday walking in. I am wondering if these shoes may not be right for me...although I was fitted with a somewhat computer analysis for these shoes...

My plan is to rest for a few days, ice, and be very mindful of my stretching and find my golf ball for arch of the foot massages...then in a few weeks have a in depth computer analysis of my foot done in Dallas and see about a new type of shoe...

Wow, Tammie, so sorry for the experience with the doctor. :( Shin splints are tough and so demoralizing. When I got them it took forever for them to heal up and it was really painful. I hope you can find some solutions with your shoe choices to help make things better.

Tammie, have you looked into Brooks Pure Project line? (PureCadence, PureFlow, etc) They are low drop (4mm) vs the drop on regular shoes (10-12mm) and that really helped my son when he was having shin issues.

I have not tried any other shoe...I have been really afraid of investing that much money into a new shoe and not know if it was right for me. But I think that adrenaline might be wrong...felt this for a while...but my shin splints occur is such an odd pattern that I really can't figure out what the cause is...

Super thoughts...yep, that's what I did when looking for a doctor. Sadly where I am at I am very limited in my doctors. I thought I had chosen the right foot/ankle one...WRONG. And the past summer really did not get any answers with the sports medicine...but he got me healed! Most of the docs around here are cyclists or skiiers...not runners. :worried:

Brooks Adrenaline...Are these over the counter orthodics? I would be interested in learning more about them...

Thanks...I need to get in the pool and do some cross training. Hopefully when things settle down new a few weeks I can get that done.

That stinks! :worried:

Yep! These are the ones I got...just the regular ones. If I remember correctly I had to but them down a little bit to fit in my shoes:
https://www.powersteps.com/product-pages/original

They carried them at my running store. They also have them on Amazon.com.

As far as changing shoes, I've heard people say that their running stores will let them return a pair if they run in them a few times and find they are not working out. Mine does that too...so when you get a chance to go to that bigger running store maybe they have a similar policy? It's tough when the store isn't close though.

It's hard to find time to fit everything in! It might really help though, both physically and mentally (not a bad thing to do something non-running every once in awhile!).

I hope you can find a solution soon!

Tammie- If you order from roadrunnersports.com or runningwarehouse.com you can run in your shoes for 60-90 days and exchange them if they don't work out. I did that for some aside I ordered, ran about 30 miles in them and they really hurt my ankle and foot so I sent them back and went with my workhorse, the Nike Pegasus. So the investment is not as scary if you want to try and they don't work, just exchange! Just a word of warning, if you go to a low drop shoe, you need to work up to running in them because it can be shocking to you calf muscles.

I managed my 12 miles this morning. My DH joined me for 8 miles, my dad joined up for the first 3 miles. It was a very hard run and my legs felt like I ran a marathon! They were really sore from my P90X3 yesterday and then the hills here didn't help much, but I did it! This was DH's first time running with the R/W method and at the first walk break he was a little annoyed, but then he really liked it and felt like he finished strong. Now we are going to the zoo for the afternoon and hopefully getting ice cream later!

How is everyone doing this fine morning?

2 of my 3 are out of school on Monday...but I have to work and 1 has to go to school! LOL...yep, we are a 4 different school district calendar house...

I'm not sure I would be able to keep up with everyone's schedules! My older boys (18 & 7) are in the same district and pretty much keep the same schedule. We were all happy to get to sleep in yesterday.

Yay for getting to enjoy the games this weekend!

Two yesterday and one every day next week except Wednesday. We love baseball!

I'm sorry the doctor wasn't more helpful. And his bedside manner sounds awful. I hope you get some answers soon.

May each of you and yours be blessed today and every day!

Can't let today go by without a Disney Cupcake for Easter....

Happy Easter! That cupcake looks yummy! My dad bought Easter cupcakes for us from Wegmann's. Not as lovely as a Disney cupcake, but I will take it!

Yesterday, I booked AKL for the PHM! I am so excited! We are going to Disney in July, Nov, and now February! What a year!

I'm at AKL (with Karen) for PHM too! Paaaarty! :cheer2:

Hello Cupcakes! Happy Easter to those who celebrate! Made cupcakes today...ate WAY too much and had a few (maybe) glasses of bubbly. Back to the regimen tomorrow -- trying a 10k trail race Saturday. Made coconut cupcakes today with eggs- oh Cadbury you do me every time:)

BTW - Tammie your doc stinks and should have an email campaign from the WiSH group. Rest, evaluate the gait and change shoes. I just bought two pair of "returned" running shoes at Roadrunner to give a few brands a try - they were 58$ a pair with my VIP card - wonder if you can call them and see of they have any. They resell the shoes that people return on the 90 day plan- they are basically new.

Booked my room at BWV- yay!

Happy Easter! I hope everyone got to celebrate with their families!

My sweet Tebow woke up with a fever, so we stayed home this morning but went to my mom's for lunch.
