Philly contractor beheaded by Islamic militants

:( I don't even have the words, I am just sick to my stomach now.

I'm loss for words. My prayers are with his family.

I just heard this on the radio :( . Like Miss Jasmine I have no words.

I know that the soldiers that did this are absolutely wrong for what they did to the prisoners, but I blame the media for publicizing those photos and causing this retaliation. That was wrong. It never should have been done. There should have been an internal investigation that was confidential. Those pictures should never have been let out to the public. This kind of retaliation was bound to happen. What is grim and gruesome is the fact that the media tried to make a buck (starting with 60 Minutes) by publicizing what happened. What is barbaric is that they had no forethought as to what the consequences of their actions or if they did, there was no concern for coalition workers and soldiers. Our people's blood is on the hands of the media.

By the way, how many times are they going to run this poor guy's final moments on TV? Fox is showing nothing else right now but the seconds before this guy is killed.

ITA :sad1:

I almost threw up when I read it on yahoo news. I was sickened by this news.

I hope there is at least just as much outrage of this horrific murder (and the 4 who where brutally killed in Fallujah) as there was for the photos of humiliation (not torture) done by a handful of horrible humans on prisoners.

I have no words.:(

Thanks for the warning though- our tv won't be on any time soon.

First of all, my heart goes out to the family of this poor, poor man. How absolutely terrible for them.

Second of all, I think it is extremely important to note that this news story first broke in the FOREIGN PRESS, at which point the American media really had no choice but to run it as well.

Blaming the media for the resultant backlash is, if you'll forgive me, ludicrous. The only people to blame for any backlash are the people who commited those crimes against those prisoners; the people who condoned it; and the people who were slow to stop it.

I totally agree with kpgclark - the media should never have published any of those photos. Yes, we are a free society with freedom of the press. But people PLEASE think about the consequences of what you're publishing!!!!! Every American in Iraq is now at risk of the same fate as this poor man. :( I'm speechless. My prayers go out to his family, and to all Americans in Iraq.

I hope 60 Minutes is pleased. I wonder if the media will give as much air time to this as they did the pictures of the Iraqi soldiers. Who's going to be the first to demand that there be an apology? Yeah. I'm not holding my breath. The hearings for the *torture* phots needs to be called off immediately. What a joke. I truly feel sickened right now.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! They are no better than the people who took the pictures in the first place, and only slightly better than the abusers.

This is awful. It was only a matter of time. And the media is feeding the frenzy. And it's going to get worse.

What was ANYONE thinking?????

ITA beattyfamily,
I hope this incident gets the same outrage.... but I sort of doubt it!

:( :( :(

As horrible as it is for us to see this man's beheading played over and over and over on TV, I can't imagine the pain his family must feel.

What ever happened to ethics and responsibility in journalism? Both for this incident, as well as the continued publication of prison abuse photos? The whole world gets the point; further "new" photos only serves to antagonize enemy forces and place our many, many good and decent soldiers at risk.

::yes:: ITA. Couldn't have said it better myself. Would only add that DoD asked them not to show the pictures for this very reason...and in the Congressional hearings has been forced to defend that request. We see now that they were right.

:sad1: This is so sad. My thoughts and prayers to the family of Nick Berg.

I found it particularly interesting that Sen. John McCain, himself an ex-POW, was calling for the publication of ALL pictures depicting prisoner abuse. However, I believe Congress has deferred that decision to the Pentagon.

I'd like to know how the photos were leaked! I just think it is amazing that not too long ago the American public didn't even know that one of their presidents was in a wheelchair while in office!
