Phillies Ball Drama

Social media is wrecking her, she’ll be luck if she even still has a job within the week and/or is able to function within her own community.

Boggles the mind there are still people who have not gotten the message everyone around you is 1 second away from recording your viral moment for all of posterity.

Not condoning her actions at all. The scene is pure lunacy.

But…people act crazy at sporting events.

I’ve gone to a couple NBA games in the past few years, all in the cheaper seats. It’s hilarious watching the people in floor seats, seats that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, during timeouts. The dance/entertainment crews come out and throw little plastic/foam balls into the crowd. People go after them like they’re the winning Powerball ticket. Things they wouldn’t pay $1 for in any other circumstance.

There appears to be a trait common to many/most in those situations that the idea of “winning” something completely overtakes any rational thought about what having a baseball (or tee shirt, or whatever cheap giveaway item) from a random regular season game means (almost always, little to nothing outside of an anecdote).

I saw the video clip.... DH has just taken this thing and ran with it. He, his brother, and friends keep texting memes back and forth. He keeps being like, "oh look at this one". It almost feels like this baseball game was the "next thing" after the Coldplay concert memes. For the record, NO I do not approve of her behavior.

I commented on this over in the Controversial Board. I have a different take is than most people do.

I saw the video too. It is not a heartwarming story. It kinda plays like an episode of AITAH on Reddit and Everybody Sucks Here (ESH).

I have a lot of sympathy for the woman. The narrative is that the woman stole the ball from the boy when in actuality, the dad took the ball from the woman. The ball landed in front of her at her feet and she bent down to pick it up. The dad came at a dead run from nearly 20 seats away and shoved her husband next to her out of the way to snatch the ball away from her. If you look at the video, another fan ran up to the other side of her but pulled up when he saw she was grabbing the ball. He didn’t shove past her to get it.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I would be super mad too if a grown man charged into my space and shoved past my husband to grab a ball away from me. He was a jerk for the shoving and grabbing. She was a jerk for confronting him, touching him and demanding the ball. The other fans were jerks for heckling her. And finally, the Phillies were jerks in rewarding the dad’s jerk behavior.

FTR, I had Chicago Cubs season tickets for over 30 years so I do know about the free for all over balls that are hit into the stands. He is still a jerk.

She actually left her seat and went down a few rows, so it wasn't her space either.

But from what I understand from the few MLB games I have attended (and watching on TV), there is no such thing as "my space" at these games. Not my style for sure. It's a freaking ball. I will stay seated, thankyouverymuch.

This woman went after another fan and screamed in his face. She then stood and gave a round of middle fingers to the crowd. I think she is the only jerk in this situation.

I feel the dad handled it well and didn't go off on a woman that grabbed his arm. She is lucky she was able to touch someone without permission and didn't get pushback. I am happy his child was given some merch.

I think it is fascinating how different people view different situations. I love different viewpoints.

The video I saw didn’t show her going down rows. Let me see if I can find one showing that.

I’ve attended not just a few MLB games, but hundreds of MLB games. My seat is my space. Under my seat is my space. The area from the seat to the seat in front of it and the cup holder on the right is my space. People cross my space to get to their space and that’s ok. Barreling into my space to grab something is not ok.

Cool!

She wasn't in or at her seat. It was in the row of the guy that got it. She had to skip a row or two forward. He had to walk in his row. Again, a ball. But you don't grab people, you don't give the middle finger to people, you don't walk down rows to get into another man's face and scream at him. She seemed nuts.

I like how he de-escalated the situation and gave her the ball.
