Lou, what do you do again that you work out of your home?

Colleen - I'm a civil engineer. I work out of my home office on some days...I work out of my old company's office other days...or I'm in Philadelphia, Atlantic County, NJ, or some other town within 1-2 hours of Philly on other days.

Hola from Nicaragua everyone! I´m having a great visit so far, and my flight down here went smoothly. Hope everyone is well!

Here it is - a race report! Sorry, I just didn't have any time during the week.

I did like the race! I don't know why Jodi thinks that I didn't. As for the medal, I do like the design, but mine has some sort of corroded nastiness on it that I am not too fond of. I do, however, really like the shirt.

Anyway, as Jodi mentioned, we met up at the "expo" on Saturday and had a nice little chat. I don't recall any awkward silence, maybe Jodi was just bored with me?:confused3 Anyway, Matt and I did want to get out of there because it was 2ish and we hadn't eaten lunch yet and were hungry. So Matt and I got some sandwiches and then walked around Central Park for a bit until it was time to meet up with some friends who live in Manhattan for dinner. Got to bed at a fairly decent hour.

Matt and I were staying at one of the official race hotels and when we asked about getting a cab Sunday morning, were laughed at (seriously - the guy was really rude). So, it looked like we were taking the subway. I had looked up the train schedule and the line we needed to take only came every 20 or so minutes on Sunday morning. And it was a local (stopped at every stop) so it was going to take over 25 minutes to get there. Since we were supposed to be in the corrals by 6:30 and since Matt freaks out about having sufficient time for port-o-potties, we were trying to be on the train that left at 5:20. We missed it by seconds (and, yes, it was most definitely my fault). And then sat in the horribly hot subway station for 25 minutes until the next one came. Anyway we made it there and Matt and I parted ways to go to our corrals (the port-o-potties were in the corrals, so Matt really had nothing to be worried about). I was going to try to go look for Jodi in her corral, but it was really late and there were a lot of people, so I figured I would just get to see her after the race (silly me).

So the race started and, as Jodi mentioned, it was really, really crowded running in Central Park (the first 7 miles). I also thought the water stops were really crowded throughout the whole race (although there were a ton of them). I pretty much had to walk at the water stops because everyone else was. I did think the best part of the race was running out of the Park down 7th Ave. to Times Square. Very cool. I felt pretty tired during the race (I'm sure the 36 miles I ran in the 6 days leading up to the race had nothing to do with it, and neither did the hours walking around Central Park the day before:rolleyes: ), but managed to finish in 2:02:07. So, that's slower than my last 2 halfs, but not by much (my PR is 1:59:24), and the two faster halfs had much better weather and crowd conditions, so I'm pretty happy. (According to the NYRR website it was 70 degrees and 90% humidity during the race).

Matt did not have a good race. I just don't think he does well in really hot, humid conditions. He got the chills and goosebumps really badly at around 9 miles and had to walk because he felt so sick. He finished about 10 minutes slower than his PR.

After we finished, we walked around and got our free Jamba Juice (I LOVE Jamba Juice and they closed all the ones that were near here) and sat in the grass and the sun (which had just come out) for awhile. As we were getting ready to leave, it started pouring. We went back to our hotel (short walk) and got cleaned up and went to the Met for the rest of the day and had a nice dinner. On Monday, we went to the Natural History Museum, had lunch at the greatest idea for a restaurant I've ever heard of - a macaroni and cheese place, and went to see a Yankees game. Then we were up at 4:00am on Tuesday for our crazy early train back to DC.

Wow - that was long - sorry. I'll be back later to catch up with everyone.

Cindy~ Thanks for the race report! Sounds like it was a good race overall. Maybe some day I'll give it a try. I need to get past this fall (alive and healthy) to target the Goofy, then look to next year's schedule of events.

I ran this morning with clouds and threatening rain. I guess they missed me, I didn't get rained on. The sun was full on when I finished. The temps were in the mid to high 70's and the relative humidity (according to the Philly news) was in the 88% range. Ugh. :sad2:

Here it goes:

Miles: 6
Time: 54:41
Pace: 9:06

Splits:
9:42
9:31
9:08
8:55
9:04
8:22

I felt pretty good throughout, just a bit lethargic at the start. I think that had to do with the humidity. I had to adjust my breathing and get warmed up a bit during the first mile.

I hope you have a great weekend!

:grouphug:

Howard

If Jodi was an engineer would she be an uncivil one?

Hey, man. :sad1:

Cindy - OK, so there was no awkard silence ;) , it just sounded good. I'm glad you liked the race, but not so glad that there's poopy on you medal :confused3 . See now that's weird, I LOVED the medal but the shirt? Not so much. When I spoke with you afterwards it sounded like you were none too pleased about how crowded it was. You're right, the water stations were crowded & walking was the only way to go....thank God, because I needed to walk :lmao: . I think I stopped @ every single aid station for that very reason. Man I was beat. I wish I could say that it was because I ran 36 miles the week before...but it was probably because I ran 36 miles the enitre MONTH before :rotfl: .

Either way, it was great to meet you & Matt & I can't wait to see you guys again @ the Yeti!! :woohoo: and Chester, of course. Maybe Dave'll show up, eh? Anyone else last minute???

I ran a little bit this week, but the humidity & heat is sucking the life out of me like a giant, sun-shaped tic!!

Good afternoon all! I made it out early this morning for my LR. It was brutal. Here are the stats:

Miles: 12.6
Time: 2:08:50
Pace: 10:13

Splits:
10:23
9:57
9:37
9:32
9:44
11:14
9:25
10:09
10:02
10:23
11:48
9:34

Post run my weight was at 192. That is 18 pounds lighter than early May and 14 pounds lighter since May 27 (the end of grad school). I am only 7 pounds from my goal of 185. :cool1: :yay: :dance3:

I hope everyone gets energized and at the same time relaxed today. The week ahead looms.

:grouphug:

Howard - Great job with the running and weight loss!! Looks like the heat ate you up yesterday. I need to get on your nutrition plan. I haven't lost (or gained) weight in about 2 months. I think the beer and bad food neutralize my running. What type of food are you eating?

Jodi - I'm with you on the heat. It was brutal yesterday. I did get to mooch my way onto another boat..this time it was a boat owned by another neighbor.

Cindy - Great job with the NYC race. I think running with the crowds for 7 miles probably killed any PR chance for you. The heat/humidity didn't help either.

Mike - I'm still trying to figure out what Jodi does for a living. Sounds like she is a med-tech that does something with QuickBooks.

Dave - How's Nicaragua? Whatever you do...don't drink the water.

Hey Colleen, Chester, Sara, Steve!

Got in 6 miles yesterday for my offweek LR. My family got invited on a boat by one of our neighbors to Ocean City, NJ. It was a gorgeous day to be on the water. Next week I have a 16-mile LR on tap.

Lou wrote: What type of food are you eating?

Lou~ I typically eat some type of cereal for breakfast (Special K, Raisin Bran, or Total). If it doesn't have raisins in it, I add my own. I don't always eat breakfast. If I don't, I eat a banana. I usually drink 1 cup of coffee a day and use sweet-n-low. For lunch, I typically get a salad w/ low fat ranch dressing or a turkey lettuce, tomato sandwich from Wawa. At dinner time, I eat smaller portions of regular foods. I avoid desserts when I can too. It really has to do with all the running I am doing, and the fewer calories I am eating that is working for me.

It is definitely easier to run a mile weighing 18 pounds less. Good luck!

Howard

Good afternoon McPHillies,

I completed my first LW today!! Drumroll please....6 miles!!:thumbsup2

I have only been walking around 2-4 over the past 3 months, so this was a HUGE breakthrough for me. I hope my knee/hip will hold up for this training.

Wednesday we are flying up to Canada to visit family. DH's father is celebrating his 80th birthday, so we thought we better make it up this summer as it was slipping away on us.

We have three more weeks of summer before school starts here in NC. I hope I can get a few more LWalks in up in Canada and then I will get back into the swing of things once the kids are back in school.

Everyone have a great day!

Oops, congrats to Cindy and Jodi for completing another half marathon. Ah those 2 hour half marathons, those were the days.:lovestruc

Wait a minute. Let me get this straight. Eating sensibly and more exercise is the secret for loosing weight? Howard, you've gotta figure out a way to spread the word!! You'll make millions! ... Come to think of it, no one would buy it. ;)

Colleen - Nice job on the 6 miles! Enjoy your trip up north. Will the weather be decent or is it hot and humid up there on the prairie too? My parents have been "summering" up in Quebec. Summer weather usually lasts about 3 weeks and the rest is a little dicey.

Lou - Nice score on the day boating!

Hey to everyone else.

I officially started my Smart Coach training program for Philly today. Rest day!!! I did run 8 miles last night. It was dark and I didn't bother trying to look at the Garmin. Just ran a nice pace. I ended up running negative splits after halfway at a pretty good clip and didn't feel like dying at the end so it's all good.

Hi all. I'm really behind.

Steve
:confused3 you reappeared briefly and are gone again. How's the achilles?

Colleen - Have a great time in Canada and congrats on the breakthrough 6 miler - that's awesome. I hope you don't have any pain tomorrow. I can't believe that summer is almost over. It really flew by. It seems like it was just a few days ago that you posted that your kids were almost done with school and you were going camping.

Mike
- Happy training. How high does your weekly mileage get on you plan?

Howard
- Congrats on the amazing weight loss.

Jodi - :wave2:

Lou - good luck with the 16 this weekend - I've got 17:eek:

Dave - I hope you have had some time to enjoy Nicaragua and haven't had to work all the time.

Chester
- How's training?

Gotta go, dinner's ready.

Mike: Who would have thought that exercise and eating right actually works?! I see an infomercial coming down the pike on this one! :lmao:

Cindy: Thanks for noticing! :lmao:

I am here to post some training results from this evening's workout:

Cross-trainer/Elliptical: 3.11 miles in 28:04
Video Bike: 4.42 miles in 15:56
Free Weights: 15 minutes

Overall I ran over 30 miles this week in addition to my XT tonight. :cool1: That is 30+ miles the last two weeks. :cheer2: :dance3: :yay:  :thumbsup2

Fun Fact: Since May 27, I have run 180.55 miles.

Have a most excellent evening everyone!

Shhhh don't tell anyone, but I made a hotel reservation for my meeting at the Contemporary at the end of September. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can go... OK, I gotta get to bed because my flight leaves Managua really early tomorrow morning. I haven't run since I got down here last week. However we did hike around a volcano in a cloud forest today, and I saw wild Howler monkeys right next to the trail. I took photos and videos - so maybe I can share when I get back home. I'm looking forward to getting home.

Colleen - :yay:  :cheer2: Congrats on the 6 miles! I also hope the increased mileage doesn't mess with your hip/knee. Have a blast in Canada:thumbsup2 .

Dave - Have a safe trip home and I'll keep my fingers crossed that you're able to attend the conference next month in WDW:) . The volcano hike sounds way too cool!!

Cindy - Nice race report and congrats on the sweet time:cool1: even if it wasn't a PR. Sorry Matt didn't fare so well:sick: .

Howard - Great pace on the LR:thumbsup2 and lots of congrats on the weight loss. I'm sure 18 lbs gone is pretty evident during your runs.

Lou - A day out on the water sounds like a great time! At least the running is neutralizing the vices and status quo is a good thing for the weight as opposed to an increase;) .

Mike - Best of luck with the training, not that you need it in :rolleyes1 since I'll most likely finish the 1/2 the same time you're finishing the full:rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

Jodi - How are you doing:hippie: ? Any training to speak of?popcorn:: Anymore trips to MV before the summer's out?

Well, I manged to do a 7 mile LR this past Saturday in 1:12:27 for a 10:21 average pace. I am happy with that. Running doesn't hurt but it's always iffy as to how much agony I'll be in post-run for the remainder of the day or the next day so it's still a guessing game for now how the increased mileage will go. I felt the leg on Sunday, not too terribly, and did 4 miles yesterday so it's a good thing. My DH's b-day was on Sunday so it was another pool party:love: .

I hope everyone's well and enjoying the summer:grouphug: ! It IS flying by!!

Sara - Nice job on the 7 miles. I hope you are able to find a balance of enough training while minimizing your pain. Your pace of 10:21 is faster than I'm running on my training runs, btw.

Dave - the volcano hike sounds awesome. I hope you do get to chase the Yeti!

As for my running since the NYC Half, I had to juggle some days around since I couldn't really fit a run in before my 6:05 AM train last Tuesday and I was feeling super lazy last Friday morning. Anyway here are my runs over the past week:

Wed - 8 (with 10 strides)
Thurs - 5 recovery
Friday - lazy
Sat - 15
Sun - 10
Monday - 4 recovery
Today - 9 with 4 at tempo pace.

I actually just realized that that is 51 miles in 7 days!
I'm still feeling great. The hardest part for me right now is getting up early enough to get the runs in before work.

For the rest of this week, I have:
Tomorrow - 5 recovery
Thurs - 10 (probably going to move this to Friday)
Fri - Rest
Sat - 5 recovery
Sun - 17

Then I am "off schedule" for the 2 weeks after that because I'm going to Disney World:dance3: :dance3: :dance3: in 11 days :dance3: :dance3: :dance3:

I'm getting really excited about this trip, can you tell?

I'm probably going to repeat this week's schedule for next week up until we leave on Saturday and I will try to get a few runs in while there, but I want to enjoy my vacation and don't want to worry about trying to follow a schedule.

Good evening DisBots

Cindy - Holy crap you're a running MACHINE:thumbsup2 ! I don't think I've ever run 50 miles in a week ;) . That's a harsh sched.! Don't peak out too soon on us. I'm so excited for you about your Disney trip! Matt's gonna have a newbie blast! Where are you staying & for how long?popcorn::

Dave - Safe travels home tomorrow, sounds like you got a little PT in down there! I really hope you make it down for the Yeti, but be advised, last time I checked it was 75% full  so make a move soon!

Mike - How does the SmartCoach plan look? Is it a lot of running, 'cause I can't do that. I like those plans where there's only 1 20 miler b4 race day! Are you going to be in the WORLD the same time as Cindy??

Howard - You haven't lost those pounds, you've given them away...to me!! Ok, so I haven't gained weight, but this heat sure does make me feel like I have, what a drag! Nice job on the consistent running & shedding of the LBS.!! Keep it up!

Colleen  :worship: Nice job on that 6 miles! That IS a breakthrough indeed...any residual effects?? I hope not. Have a safe trip up to your little house on the Canadian prairie & tell your Paw-in-law I said happy birthday :dance3: .

Sara - WOW, very impressive!!:woohoo: , I'm so happy for you! 7 then followed up with 4 the next day?? How's DH feeling these days? Well enough to eat B'day cake? Hope it was a fund day! RU running during the week as well? How're the girlies?

Chester - What gives?

Steve - RU gone again?? You're so fickle!

(King)Louie - Nice snaggage of the neighbor boating invitation! What a nice day it was for that! BTW, I don't do anything for a living but hang out on these boards :rotfl2: .

I haven't been running much as I've had this funky stomach bug thing lingering :confused3 , I think it's just my unwillingness to deal with the heat & humidity. Did manage to walk 3 today w/ DS as he's "training" for the Yeti  . He doesn't really want to be out there exercising, but once I agreed to strap the TV to my back & let him walk behind me he gave in. I ran 6 on Sun....whoopee. I'm shopping around for a Philly training schedule as I'm sure I should be training by now :rolleyes1 .

DAVE - Just looked @ the site & the Yeti run is 85% full so get on it, brother!!

Disney also sent an email to me tonight showing the medal for the Yeti. It's pretty cool; a bronze looking thing with the Expedition Everest Challenge logo on the front that opens up into, what looks like, a real compass. I KNEW I was paying a ridiculously high entry fee for a reason :rotfl2:

What's up guys??

Cindy - Wow, you are a mileage beast! Glad you're still feeling good with the big numbers! My plan peaks at 54 miles but has about 4 weeks that hover around the 50 mile mark. We'll see how it goes.

Dave - I hope you have/had a safe trip back. Funny, but I'm pretty sure I've got a couple of those howler monkies in the house right now!

Jodi - Ahh, just skip the training plan! It seemed to work pretty well for your ultra. I'm going with the SmartCoach thing again (only 4 runs a week:thumbsup2 ) but I've used a couple of Hal Higdon plans in the past and liked them.

Remember, I'm not allowed to post about travel plans. But, odds are good I may be in the vicinity the same time as Cindy.

Sara - You're being smart about taking it easy, right? Right?

Howard - Congrats on the 2nd 30 mile week. You've really done a great job staying consistent.

I'll be getting my 6 miles tonight running to work and another 6 miles in the AM running home. It's really only about 4 miles there so I'll have to take the long way.

Take care all.

Colleen - Congrats of the 6-mile LW! Can't believe we are talking about school starting. It feels like they just got out.

Mike - Nice job on the 8-mile run at night.

Howard - You are the man with the XT!

Dave - You are like the real life Indiana Jones. Have a safe trip back.

Sara - Great job running 7 miles. You are more than 1/2 way there. Nice to see you are running mostly pain free.

Cindy - 51 miles!! That's insane!

Jodi - Sorry about the stomach big. You may just be suffering from the post NYC blues.

Not much to report. Got in an easy 4 miles this AM and walked 2.6 miles with DW tonight. Stilled swamped with work and still psyched about the pending DL 1/2 and trip.

Lou
