Hey Dudes!!

Steve - It's official, you're insane!! 20 MILES & you were watching MONK??? Man, you ARE a glutton for punishment:rotfl2: :thumbsup2 . Seriously, though, nice job, man!!

CLWho:santa: - OMG, 10 miles on Sat? For no apparent reason??:confused3 :rotfl: . Wow, impressive. The only reason why I keep signing up for these runs is 'cause I need a REASON to go out & run:) . Nice job! Also, re: the Minnie - I bet you could scrap a ride off somone on these boards or just get a cab - I don't think that'd be too expensive.

Mike - :thumbsup2 WTG on 12 miles this weekend, I'm jealous. Listen, I figure since you rotate out of work & have a few weeks off now, there's no excuse for you to miss runs. I'm not buying the kids' programs & stuff - nice try though:lmao: ! Dude, you've gotta run! If YOU don't run you KNOW I'm not gonna run!

Lou - 14.5 miles? Nice job:thumbsup2 & what a pace. I'm afraid ya'll be waaaaay out in front of me come Jan. Oh well, I'm used to all that!

Dave - Hmmm...I think I remember you! That's such a cool story about the running club. I think that perhaps I wouldn't "fit in" with something like that...as you know, I don't talk much when I run!! But free hot chocolate is quite enticing! Good luck w/ your job prospects!

Colleen - Sorry your knee's being a jerk! But I'm so glad you were still able to get serious mileage in...seeing as you've got such a loooong taper scheduled:rolleyes1 :rotfl2: !

Sara - Did you run vicariously on Sat??? How'd the volunteering go? Were you your usual, cheery self?:rotfl2: :lmao: :scared1:

Chester - popcorn:: Anxiously awaiting a half report!! BTW, how's your son's training going? IS he training??:3dglasses

So Fri. the weather started in the early afternoon - snow/sleet/rain/icy crap, so off I got again to the dreadmill @ the gym. Not abe to stand a full 60 mins. for the THIRD time of the week I only did 50. I WILL not be returning to the dredmill until after Jan, if ever. It has totally messed up my knees!:headache: . That's all I need for the GOOFY, beat knees! Yesterday I went out for a short 4 miler & was pretty uncomfortable for most of the run...right knee's worse off:sad2: . I'm so aggrevated! Oh well, lesson learned. I did have a dream last night that I finished a marathon & was all energetic at the end:lmao: . Dreams can be quite amusing!

NYC was great, although quite busy, of course. We hit Chinatown & got some of our teas, had lunch uptown @ our favorite restaurant & went to see the play "The Homecoming"...ok, that was weird...but we wanted to see Ian McShane on stage, so...Then we wandered around for a while & went to Bryant Park where they had all these really, really cool Christmas shops outside (way overpriced but fun to look around). They also put down a huge ice skating rink in the park - real neat stuff. We caught the 5:30 train home which got us back to New Haven @ around 7:20. The only reason why I mention this is because around 8:30 some poor soul decided to jump in front of train & off himself...train activity didn't resume until 11pm. OMG, if I'd been stuck in the city w/ Bruce, unable to "get out" He would've freaked so hard!!:lmao: He's one of those people that prepares for absolutely worse case scenario i.e. he brings glow sticks w/ us when we go to the city for the day "in case the power goes out":rotfl: :rotfl2: ...ok? Get the picture?? I told him if that ever happened I'd take those glow sticks & sell them for $20e. on the street!!

Oh yeh, back to running stuff - I've got 20 on tap for the weekend w/ crappy weather forecast pretty much all week here...guess I'll be getting wet! Did I miss anything? Sorry for the long post

Jodi - I want to run the full with you on Sunday. Is that okay:lmao: ? I figure you'll be tired and mean by that time and we can bring the worst out in each other:confused3 . Too funny about Bruce and the preparedness. I'm glad you had a great time in NYC.

Colleen - If I can't kick this bug soon then I may be walking WDW right along with you:woohoo: . I hope your knee is feeling okay today:wizard: .

Mike - Howard The Duck does seem like a desperation movie. DH recently rented Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Porky's and said the same thing about how they seemed much better 20 years ago:rotfl2: . At least it got you through the 12-miler:thumbsup2 .

Lou - :wizard: for the groin issues. I'll have to refrain from offering advice on that one...Great job on the 14.5 despite the rain:cheer2: .

Cindy - Congrats on the 10 mile LR:banana: .

Dave - Thanks for checking in and letting us know you and yours are doing well. Sweet job on the 8 miles:cool1: .

Chester - Anxiously awaiting a race report from youpopcorn:: .

I put in a total of 4 miles this weekend. I still am plagued by some strange virus. I am LOSING:scared1: weight (don't really want that) and I had a terrible stiff neck and no energy all weekend. No appetite and no motivation to speak of so I am going the rest route. The volunteering was great. I worked registration and then handed out medals for the kids run:cheer2: .

On a better note, rest did me well and I actually had a respectable 3.5 this morning on the TM. I still don't feel great but I definitely think the rest helped me out a bit. NO PACKET YET:rolleyes1 ...

Happy training to all this week:cheer2:

NO PACKET YET:rolleyes1 ...

Sara - I can't believe that!! I'd be soooo pissed! I DO hope you feel better:grouphug: There's a funky wicked stomach pain & nauseated thing going on in our household, too.:wizard: Just rest & rest...running isn't even a factor (as usual for me):lmao:

Sara - I can't believe that!! I'd be soooo pissed! I DO hope you feel better:grouphug: There's a funky wicked stomach pain & nauseated thing going on in our household, too.:wizard: Just rest & rest...running isn't even a factor (as usual for me):lmao:
Thanks Jodi:hug: That sounds exactly like what I have - the nausea and stomach pain funky thing. It is real beat and honestly the miles I should be running are the furthest thing from my mind. As for the packet...I may just stomp on it out by the mailbox when it FINALLY gets here:rotfl: .

O.K., here's the race report from Sunday:

I decided to swap last weekend's LR with this weekend's so that I could use this local race as a training run. My goal was to run the first 10 miles at pace based upon heart rate (158 bpm) and then increase by 5% at the remaining mile marks (mile 11 at 165 bpm, mile 12 at 172 bpm, mile 13 at 178 bpm, then sprint).

The morning skies were clear, the temperature started in the 70's and rose to 85 and the humidity was level was high.

The race started 7:35 am at Madiera Beach City Hall and headed North on Gulf Boulevard for 4 miles through the barrier island towns of Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, Redington Shores and Indian Shores. At Indian Shores, we turned East and headed over the Park Boulevard bridge to the mainland.

The next 2.5 miles were along a quiet tree canopied two lane road that goes past parks and residential areas until we turned into Seminole Centennial Park. This is where we left the local roads and entered onto the Pinellas Trail.

The Trail was nice and smooth and flat with the exception of a couple of overpasses that crossed major roads. There was some light traffic from bicyclers and rollerbladers heading South as we headed North.

At mile 12, we entered Taylor Park and were directed around a lake on a crushed shell path. Once around the lake we crossed mile 13 and then had a slight downhill to the finish.

The first 10 splits ranged from 10:16 to 11:31 with a heart rate that averaged from 151 to 159. Lap 11 was 10:50 at 165. Lap 12 was 9:40 at 172. Lap 13 was 9:24 at 178 and the final sprint was at 8:18 with a max hr of 185.

I finished 50th out of 63 in my age group with a gun time of 2:21:00. Overall, I was 588/859 finishers. I think I will try and make this an annual event. I had a really easy time of it and felt like I could have run faster for all but the finish.

This morning I had no soreness, so I was glad the pace seemed easy. I think I will stay with this plan when I run the Goofy and will expect similar results.

Sara
I hope your "Tardy Packet Syndrome" illness ends today.

Jodi
DS has exams this week, so training is probably on the back burner. I'm going to drive to Gainesville on Friday afternoon to pick him up. He'll be on break until January 7th, so I imagine most of his training will be done during that time. He's young and in good shape, so he can get away with it.:rolleyes1

Lou
Very good pace considering the conditions and having to deal with a groin pull. Does the groin pain stop when you are running or is it constant? I was having groin pains when training for MCM, but only when I wasn't running.

Mike
I hope you don't have to make 20 miles on the treadmill. Treadmill running usually results in ankle pains for me the following day.

Cindy
Contratulations on getting back to a "long" run. Just get back into routine and miles will come easy. I finally made it back into the gym this morning. Now hopefully I can get back in my routine.

Dave
Great to hear from you again. Glad you found a local group participate with. I've joined the local running club and helped out at a Thanksgiving 5 miler last month. Thursday I'm going to help out with their Jingle Bell 5k run.

Colleen
What is your walking pace? I hope you have a low bib number to get you as close as possible to the start. It's always helpful to "bank" as many minutes as you can early in the race in case of unscheduled pit stops.

Hapy and healthy training to all,

Chester

Sara - I'm sorry you've been feeling rotten. Hopefully the worst is behind you. I was afraid to say anything, but we got our packets at the end of last week:rolleyes1 .

You and Jodi, running together, in foul moods.... Promise you won't haul off and punch Mary Poppins in the mouth or kick a dwarf in the ying/yangs  ?

Jodi - I hope your TM afflicted knee is feeling better. Good thing that poor schmuck was considerate enough not to inconvenience your travel plans.

Chester - Sounds like a good race. Even better that you are happy with your pace plan.

I finally got outside again this morning. It had been over a week since I did an outside run and to be honest I was a tad nervous. Crazy. Anyways, all the TM running really messed up my pace perception. Too fast to start but a good run overall.

See ya!

Lou
Very good pace considering the conditions and having to deal with a groin pull. Does the groin pain stop when you are running or is it constant? I was having groin pains when training for MCM, but only when I wasn't running.

Chester - Today (2 days after 14.5 miles) I feel fine. The pain is only when I run. The pain has been happening primarily on LR's, usually after 7-9 miles or so. I started out running 8-min miles on Sunday and then at around Mile 9 it hit me. From that point on I struggled to run 10-min miles. I had to shorten my stride a lot and after a while even that didn't work. It's frustrating.

Hey Chester,

My walking pace is about 14 min miles, so I am not worried about the sweepers. My bib number is 50** something, so I am in Corral B. It only took a few minutes for us to cross the start line last year.

No training today, I planned to walk after I tutored in DD's class today, but she informed me that she was "sick" and needed to come home early. She said she has been having headaches, not sure.... She 'plays sick real good', tears and everything.

Off to bed, not so busy tomorrow, so I hope to get in yoga and 4 miles.

Hey guys! So this is where the other half of my buddies have been, huh? Good to hear everyone's doing well. I'll admit, I haven't had time to read the entire 57 pages of this thread (I actually had no idea the thread was so long until I happened to click on it tonight). Who knew Philly was so exciting?? :confused3

It'll be good to see a lot of you guys in January. Happy training!

Steve

Steve - Yes, Philly is the place (or thread) to be. Actually it just seems easier following less people than the main thread. Good to see you here. Your Steelers had a tough week but at least they'll be heading to the playoffs. Eagles fans are wallowing in extra misery this holiday season.

I got 5 miles in on the TM today in 47:30 (9:30 pace). It was boring but better than being in the cold. I'll try to get in a mid week LR of 9 miles tomorrow morning outside. Temps are supposed to be higher but looks like a chance of rain. We'll see.

Hey PhillyPhreaks!

Steve - :yay: Look forward to meeting you & your wife in Jan!!

Lou - Did you get that 9 in outside?

Colleen - Does your daughter "feel better":rolleyes1 . Did you get the yoga & 4 miles in? That's an excellent pace for walking! I can't walk at all...well, you know what I mean...everything hurts too much after 2 miles:rotfl: .

Sara - Are you still training or is that ruse over with?:rotfl2: Are you feeling better??

Mike - I got my Garmin 305 & it ROCKS! I wore it for the first time yesterday & it's like 10 lbs lighter than my other Garmin! My knees is much happier now that I went back outside, thank for asking:goodvibes . Are you & Kathy ready for Xmas? Have you been running? tee-hee:rolleyes1 . I'm not look forward to 20 miles Sat., ugh!

Chester - I'm diggin the times for your half, nice job:thumbsup2 . I'm glad one of us has a plan of attack for the GOOFY! I'm still clueless...maybe I'll ask your sonpopcorn:: .

So running has been a chore as of late...4.5 on Sun, 3.5 (why bother) on Mon., 6 yesterday & i'll prolly go 4 today just because it's so dang warm, almost 50. Tomorrow noon we're supposed to get 4-8" of the white stuff, so that forces me to get up in a.m. if I plan on doing anything (i'm thinking elliptical in the pm). Fri. I'll take off all together. Sat. is 20 miles w/ no higher than 29 degrees for the day (at least it's not windey), w/ reports of a big storm Sat. night into Sun. Wheeeeee!

Hey, does anyone out there use supplements for electrolyte replacement? I've carried salt w/ me on several occasions & always thought that after I've taken these little packets (eewww) i've felt better. Prolly all in my head, but...just wondering what your guys thoughts are on this.

Jodi - Yes and no on the 9 miles. Yes, I got the 9 miles in today but I did 7 outside and 2 on the TM. I was psyched, like you, to enjoy the 50+ degree weather but half way through the run the sky turned black. I didn't feel like running in a downpour so I ran home and did the last 2 miles on the TM.

The plan is to get in 5 miles tomorrow and a 18 mile LR this weekend. Hopefully the weather is decent.

I don't do the salt thing but I'm still new to this whole marathon thing. I brought salt to the Philly marathon (because they gave packs away for free at the Expo) but forgot to take it. I'm more worried about bringing Tylenol on a LR to dull the pain then salt right now.

Happy Wednesday all!

CLWho:santa: - OMG, 10 miles on Sat? For no apparent reason??:confused3 :rotfl: . Wow, impressive. The only reason why I keep signing up for these runs is 'cause I need a REASON to go out & run:) . Nice job!

I hear you on that. I need a reason too. But the National half marathon is really not that far away and I've been doing some reading recently about training strategies and theories and it has really motivated me (for now at least) to want to get a good time on the half. I am going to attempt a pretty difficult training schedule that recommends that you be running 25 miles/week before starting, so I really need to get my act together.

I've downed a salt packet twice while running. Once during one of the really long 90 degree training runs for MCM (I think it was probably a 19 miler). I was starting to feel really weird and not right. Can't exactly explain, but the salt most definitely made me feel better. I also had some salt during the MCM. Not sure I even remember why, I wasn't feeling bad, I think I just thought it sounded like a good idea (what would have been a good idea was if I actually remembered where the water stops where and didn't dump a whole salt packet in my mouth when the water stop was more than half a mile away - crazy thirsty)

Lou - glad you were able to get at least part of your run in outside.

Colleen - wow. You are a crazy fast walker.

Sara - I hope you are feeling better!

Chester - congrats on the half and finding a plan for Goofy!

Jodi - good luck on the 20 this weekend!

Mike - Glad that you were able to get back outside again. Hopefully you're able to get a few more in before the yucky winter weather returns.

I ran 5 miles yesterday and 4 this morning. Perfect weather - 51 degrees at 6 AM. I'm registered for a 10k on Saturday - forecast calls for a high of 32 with a "wintery mix." Hopefully I won't end up on my butt again like I did during my last running adventure out in the winter wonderland.

Oh, and I am officially registered for the Minnie! My first Disney race - I'm very excited. Still no real decision on where to stay, but I did convince Dsis to forget about the Princess Package idea and we decided that we would stay somewhere that neither of us had stayed before. So based on cost factors, that pretty much means we will be staying at either CBR or CSR. Anybody have any opinions on either?

Happy training (or not, if you prefer) to all!

Hey McPhillies!

Jodi
- Yippee for the 305! Just think how much faster you'll be without the extra 10 lbs on your wrist! Bruce is so thoughtful. Have you tried the HR monitor yet? You and Chester will be the scientists of the group.

Kathy and I are pretty much ready for Christmas. As a matter of fact, I hooked up the Wii this AM when the girls were all at school. Hid all the wires in back of the TV so that Christmas morning, it's plug the console into the already connected stuff and lickety-split they're playing games!

As for the salt packet: I'm pretty sure that Gatorade and the like provide plenty of sodium. As long as you drink some of that during a race I don't think you really need any straight salt. LR's may be another matter if you only carry water.

20 miles are fun! You'll love every minute of it:rolleyes: .

Cindy - You're posts look different now that you've registered for a Disney race. They have a certain "glow" about them;) .

I haven't registered for the National Marathon yet. I was sure I was going to do the full but lately the half sounds better and better.

Good luck dodging the weather this weekend.

Lou - Good job getting those miles in. Ditto about the weather.

Ran a hard 8 miles yesterday. I took today as a rest day. I'm switching my 20 mile LR from Saturday to tomorrow due to some impending weather (although it's now supposed to rain tomorrow AM :sad2: ).

I am kind of excited though. Got some new shoes, a pair of those creepy toe socks, and a blinding yellow Brooks running jacket from runningwarehouse today. It's amazing to me that I can place an order at 6AM Monday morning and have a box of goodies here from CA by noon on Wednesday! I know, I'm simple.

Mike - Check you out, all sparky w/ new stuff for your long run this weekend!:3dglasses . Lemme know how those scary toe socks work, I was wondering...The girls will love the Wii (don't hog it), my son has one & it's really cool. Although I doubt the girls will be hacking off heads in a "Resident Evil" game like my chip off the 'ol block is having fun doing:love: Good luck tomorrow w/ that run. I've modified my plans & decided NOT to run today...just don't feel like it & it's not all that warm.

Cindy - I haven't registered for the National Marathon yet. I was sure I was going to do the full but lately the half sounds better and better.

I'm not trying to discourage you from doing the full, but I would check out the course map before you make your decision.

The half doesn't split off from the full until mile 13 - I know a lot of people hated the seeing the finish line part of MCM but it didn't really bother me that much, the distance left at that point was short enough, but 13 miles? Not sure how I would feel about that. Also, for the full, miles 10-13 are the same as miles 23-26. Again, not sure how I feel about that one.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

OK, I'm now fighting off a cold... uugh. I did get a 3 mile treadmill run in on Monday and yesterday, and I'm going to try to run today. Not much else new here.

Cindy- Congrats on signing up for the Minnie. I had forgotten you were not running the WDW marathon. For some reason I had it in my head that you were. So if you're keeping your running going without having a marathon in January, I guess I can too.

Jodi- What did you and Bruce do in NYC? Everytime it gets around the holidays I think I would love to go there. I just never have. I've only ever been to NYC 2x in my life. Maybe we should schedule a time to go and you could be a tour guide for us.

Colleen- So I guess you've heard by now the Disney Cruise Line is NOT going to Alaska in 2009. Bummer! How are your knees these days?

Mike- Sounds like you have lots of fun new stuff to run in this weekend. Have a great time.

Lou- You are moving on your runs. WTG! :thumbsup2

Steve- Good to hear from you. Wow, I wish I could run with you again at Disney. Give my best to Krista. I need to send you a PM.

Chester- Awesome job on your half marathon. What race did you run?

Sara- Oh no, hope you're feeling better soon. Wow, your sickness sounds similar to how I felt too. No energy, really tired, and really sore achy neck and shoulders. Get your rest.

OK, if I missed anyone, I apologize. Hope you all have a great day.

The half doesn't split off from the full until mile 13
Cindy - My first marathon in May did the same thing. That was a LONELY feeling knowing all those lucky people got to stop running and I still had to do the same distance I had just finished. I guess I'll just wait and see how training goes in Jan and Feb and decide then. Or more likely wait until the half fills up and be forced to do the full :rotfl: .

Dave - Hope you feel better soon. Good job keeping at it.

Jodi - You're right. Probably no Wii head lopping here. There's enough screaming and mayhem here on a daily basis. We don't need to add any.

I did my 20 miles this morning. Big picture, not too bad but if you look and mile-by-mile, 12 thru 18 were not things of beauty. I think I'll start calling myself "12-mile Mike". I can run a pretty mean 12 miles. After that, it's all bets are off.

Oh, and unlike Chester I don't have the yings to take stuff right out of the box and go 20 (or 26.2 miles). I did wear the coat:cloud9: but am saving the crazy socks and new shoes for a shorter distance for their debut.

Have fun everyone. And remember, you still have LRs to do this weekend. I'm done!!! :dance3: :dance3: :dance3:

Have fun everyone. And remember, you still have LRs to do this weekend. I'm done!!! :dance3: :dance3: :dance3:

Boo! Hiss!:rotfl:

You are done, done? Isn't the marathon exactly a month away today? So that is 4 1/2 weeks isn't it? I plan my 20 miler on Monday which is a day shy of 4 weeks and I thought I had a long taper?!? Do I have my weeks mixed up? Having a senior moment here.:confused3

5 miles in today, strictly walking... need new shoes.

OK, I'm sooooo pissed! I did this whole post b4 & it never went up!:confused3 .

Mike - I can't believe you did 20 today - you are a jerk:yay: I will not hook up my heart monitor & have it tell me that I can run a "lot faster" b/c my rate is so low. I'm very happy being a slug!

Colleen - Yes, he has his weeks messed up, in my world, it's a short run Sat., followed by 20 next Sat., then taper for 3 weeks...:woohoo: But I think I'll do 20 this Sat. & taper for 4...heck, everyone else is:goodvibes !

Dave - Feel better! I posted this big long thing about NYC, bottom line was, Bruce & I walked around aimlessly & we'd be happy to show you & yours the spots we know if you ever come down (Jan-March is cheap time in the City).

I ran 6 today b4 the snow started, right now there's about 5-6 inches out there...snow day, blahblahblah, no work, no school.
