Sara - Yes, I'm going to try to train for WDW. LR's on the weekend are getting tough. I always wait til the last minute to do my shopping. Plus this cold and snow isn't helping. We have a lot of ice on the ground right now.

Jodi - Yes, I did the dreadmill today. I usually throw a towel over the display so I can't see how much more I have to run. It's so boring but I usually run faster on the TM because all I want to do is finish and get off the darn thing.

Lou

Only time for a quick pop in post. I am at a conference all day today, but it is in a hotel across the street from my office. I decided to skip the conference lunch - I couldn't bear the effort of making small talk about the developments in the mutual fund industry with people I don't know - and eat lunch at my desk.

No running to report today. It is freezing and icy outside and I figured the chance of a slip and fall and having to report that I broke my tail bone or other such embarassing injury was too great. Also, I am lazy and didn't want to have to get out of bed extra early, since I already had to get up earlier than normal to get to the conference on time. I will probably try to run tomorrow. I think I'm going to have to join a gym this weekend - I just don't think I am going to be able to make it through the winter without running on a treadmill at some point.

Chester - the go Elf yourself cite is hilarious! Best of luck on the half this weekend - are you viewing it as a training run or trying for a PR?

Happy non-training to all!

Hello Phillanators,

OK, I think some of us need get some running in for this marathon/Goofy thing we have happening in 5 weeks!!

I have been doing yoga 3 times a week and walking or walk/run about 4 times a week. My training schedule is going to be all funked out because of commitments btwn now and New Years, so this is what I have planned for LR's:

Friday, December 7th - 13-16 miles (using Jodi math/miles)
Monday, December 17 - 20 miles
Tuesday, December 18th - TAPER!!

Yes, that is 3 1/2 - 4 week taper.:confused3  :rolleyes1 I am fine with that. I will make sure I get in about 15 miles around January 2nd and I will be good to go.

Link, loved the Elf link!

Jodi, way ta show the way by getting those miles in!

Lou, how often do you "peek" around the towel?:rolleyes1

Mike and Cindy, you have ice and snow?:confused3

Sara, so cool you mom took the girls to the show! It must be great having your mom close by.

Kathy, hi!:wave2:

I am volunteering at a local 5K on Saturday so I don't know how many miles I am going to run. I will go for as many as it feels good for:laughing: .

If I ran based on how many it feels good for, I would've probably run less than a mile the past few times I've run. :rotfl: :rolleyes1

No, my sister and I didn't book the Minnie last night because she got home too late - but we are doing it this weekend for sure!

Glad to hear that your daughters had a good time. I remember loving going into NYC over the holidays as a kid and seeing the Rockets and all the Christmas decorations.

Colleen - yes, we have ice and snow here - but it is supposed to be back up to almost 60 degrees by Monday so we'll be getting rid of it soon. I actually was forced to do a 4 week taper for MCM (and by forced, I mean I chose a 4 week over a 2 week) because I ran the Army 10 miler 3 weeks before the MCM. I know, great planning, right? But when I registered for the ATM, I said there was absolutely no way that I was doing a full marathon until at least fall of '08:rolleyes1 . Anyway, I don't think it made a difference, you should be fine with the slightly extended taper.

Mike - thanks for making me laugh every time you post!

Lou - Great pace on your run yesterday! So, you are from the Jersey side of Philly? Whereabouts? My mom was from Pennsauken and my father is from Moorestown.

Jodi - did you get your run in this afternoon?

CLH:santa: - Yes, I got my run in & it felt pretty good, actually! But of course, it was only 4.5 miles. It was cold, around 30, but no wind & it was nice. Where are you & your sister staying when you go to Minne?? What an exciting thing to plan together! Hope your conference to day wasn't too mind numbing!

Colleen - uh..., I think I remember you. Refresh my memory, you're the one from Canada, right? . Yeh, that's it...have you seen that guy, i think his name is DAVE, anywhere out there in cyberspace??
So you're doing 13-16 tomorrow? Good luck:thumbsup2 .

Once again I'm planning to get up in the a.m. to run...we'll see:eek:

I've decided to stop saying "only" with respect to any run - 4.5 is a good number! Glad it felt good and that there was no wind. I hate the wind.

The question of where to stay for the Minnie has not yet been decided. Dsis wants to do the Princess Package, but I'm not really sold on shelling out that kind of $$. The big issue is the transportation and having to rent a car or not. I don't really want to have to drive it because I drive only a few times a year and have sort of lost that feeling of being comfortable while driving that I used to have when I drove every day (which hasn't happened since I was 18 and living in CT) and Dsis is saying that she just doesn't want to deal with the hassel. Anyway, we've decided to wait on making that decision for awhile. Chester, I seem to remember you saying that you will be camping at FW, where is everyone else planning on staying?

Mike - Seriously my friend, I've been thinking you've had taper madness for a few weeks now:rolleyes1
Taper madness? I WISH I could blame it on something like that. Unfortunately, I've been afflicted with impulsive need to make lame attempts at sophomoric humor for as long as I can remember. To quote my 2nd grade teacher, Miss Wheatley's report card comments "Michael often finds it more important to entertain the class than to get his work done." The shoe still fits!

BTW, I wonder what happened to Miss Wheatley. She was HOT! O.K., actually, she was pretty and smelled nice. When I was in 2nd grade that's as hot as it got.

Cindy - I'm thinking you really should do something to make a treadmill available for you. I know it's not like we live up north like Sara, Dave, and Jodi but there will be lots of days when it's just not feasible (or desirable) to run outside between now and the end of March.

Colleen - I'm thinking you won't get much opposition to a 4 week taper from this group right now! Nice to see you again.

Lou - Sorry the weather forced you inside, but good job getting some miles in. You're lucky about being faster on the TM. I'm usually a good 60-90 seconds/mile SLOWER on the TM :headache: .

Jodi - Hi.

The little ladies got a snow day today. Only a little snow but plenty of ice everywhere so no running outside. Kathy got dibs on the TM since I hogged it Wednesday night. She did 8 miles, which I'm pretty sure is her longest TM outing to date :cheer2: . I'll try to get some miles in tomorrow sometime.

Jodi - Good luck with the morning run and the cold. It's freezing here so it must be bad in CT. I'm taking a day off.

Cindy - I'm staying at CBR with DW, Dsis-in-law, and Dbro-in-law. I'm not doing a car. I drive enough during the week so I enjoy letting Disney take me around.

Mike - I hate the TM. I usually crank it up as I get going because I figure the faster I run the faster I can get off the thing. Plus it doesn't hurt my joints the way the asphalt does.

I'm taking a day off today. I'll work on getting a LR tomorrow. I need to get it in early because DW is getting on me about the leaves piled up around the house.

CLW:santa: - For Minnie, I'd let Disney drive you around for sure. Often the packages aren't that cost effective. I'd do everything separately, unless you can get something from an airline or something. Just really do your research & pay attention to the Disboards for deals - some people really know how to work it on these threads:rotfl: ! I don't know where I'm staying yet & haven't even signed up for the race yet:sad2: .

Mike - Tell Kathy I said WTG on that drdmill run! You're SLOWER on the dreadmill? ME TOO!! I was embarassed to say anything, I thought i was the only one, but man that thing slows me down, that's why I do time increments on that thing instead of distance. I just do Jodimath & disregard logic & it's all good in my head;) :lmao: !

OK, everyone's soooo silly if they thought I got up this a.m. to run. It was 17 degrees & b4 I went to bed last night I'd already determined I'd hit the dreadmill tonight:scared1: . My DS & I did, however, manage to walk our mangy mutt a mile this a.m.:confused3 . BTW, I'll be blowing off my 8 miles for a trip into the city tomorrow:rolleyes1 . Maybe I'll do it Sun....then again, maybe I won't! Gotta love that dedication:eek: .

Good luck to all who decide that running's a good idea this weekend!

Chester - Good luck on that 1/2 Sun!!

Colleen - Did you do your LW/R today??? How far???:woohoo:

Cindy - I'm staying at CBR with DW, Dsis-in-law, and Dbro-in-law. I'm not doing a car. I drive enough during the week so I enjoy letting Disney take me around.

The problem is that there is no transportation to the races for the Minnie unless you do the Princess Package. The ride to the race is the only reason we even thought about doing it in the first place.

So, I guess I jinxed myself with my comment yesterday about slipping and falling because I totally wiped out on my run this morning. I am completely fine (except for a bruised palm and elbow) so it is ok to laugh. It was a pretty stupid fall too - there was ice mixed with snow visable everywhere, so I was being very careful when I was running over those parts but there were some places that were clear and those were fine. Except for when I was running under the overpass. This was at 5:30 A.M. and it was dark out and I don't bring a light with me because the trails I run on are all really well lit, except for going under that one overpass so I couldn't see that the ground looked wet. You guessed it - black ice. This was on a downhill, so it should have occurred to me that water would have run down from the melting snow yesterday and froze overnight but I don't think my brain is able to function that early in the morning. Guess I'll take this as a sign that it is definitely time to rejoin the gym!

20 miles....on the treadmill.....watching 4 episodes of Monk.

Came home in time to get my children off the bus, then walked behind my house barefoot and in shorts, and sat down in 5 inches of snow and buried my legs for 15 minutes.

Please, for the love of humanity, remind me why I am doing this again? :confused3

Sorry I have been AWOL guys; I'm still catching up on all your posts. Well, I'm happy to say that the last long run prior to taper will be Dec 21. I'm really hoping it is not 18 degrees with black ice so I can run outside (of course, I'm sure there are many more episodes of Monk that I have not yet seen.)

Take care everyone; I'm going to go schedule a psych evaluation now.

Steve - Wow, wow, wow! 20 miles on the TM. Wow!

Obviously, all that TM time must have impaired your thought process if you then decided it would be good to sit in the snow for 15 minutes!! I'm all for the ice bath (more of a cold water soak for me) but come on! Hopefully you will come back to your senses before you have to make any important decisions or operate heavy machinary. :)

Cindy - Glad you didn't hurt yourself on your little tumble. Pretty brave out there running at 5:30 in the first place. So, did you buy your DH the pink tutu?:rotfl:

Jodi - Enjoy the city! Buy Bruce something pretty. Did you get your Garmin yet?

Sara - Just in case your up at 4AM and DISing, have fun at the 5k.

Chester - Have a good race! Any time goal for this one?

Friday was a XT day for me (shopping for a new dryer and a few Christmas presents with Kathy) so I didn't get a chance to run. I'm scheduled for 12 sometime this weekend. Maybe I'll do run both days and try to make up for the run I missed this week. Or maybe not:rolleyes1 .

Good Morning Teammates: :surfweb:

Sorry I haven't been around here much. Please don't take it personally. I've been popping in every now and then, but I haven't had a whole lot to post, and I feel bad not knowing what everyone's up to and I don't want to give a reply that's all about me. Work has been plodding along slowly but surely. I've been sending out a lot of feelers about switching over from 100% research to picking up some more teaching, and I'm finally getting some responses about that. So that's good. I'm going down to a neighboring college next week to talk with them about teaching there - they need someone to teach a course next semester. It's not what I want to teach, but it would get my foot in the door.

I've been keeping my running going, and I have been enjoying just doing maintenance miles. The past 3 weeks I've been averaging only 4 runs/week and around 15 miles/week. I haven't done a LR for a long time. I've been doing a lot of dreadmill runs too, and I notice my pace is slower on the treadmill too. However, I've been trying to up it to a 9 min/mile pace on the TM, and it's been translating into getting a little faster outside too.

I'm going to try to run today if I can get out the door.

Mike- I saw where you're planning on running Cleveland. I am going to tentatively put that on my calendar too. I may just run the half, but it would be fun to know to run again with you if the races start together.

Hi Sara :wave2:
Hi Jodi :wave2: - Oh, I remember you asked when my b-day was. It's Dec 24th.
Hi Chester :wave2:
Hi Colleen :wave2:
Hi Cindy :wave2:
Hi SilverSteve :wave2:
Hi Lou :wave2:

DAVE!!!! So good to see you! I saw you pop in on the weekly thread so I knew that you weren't kidnapped by a bunch of ruffians and made to do unmentionable things:scared1: . Well, maybe you were but they were nice enough to let you use their criminal laptop. Or maybe you escaped and made to a Starbucks. Or maybe.... Well, you get the idea. We're glad you're back.

Cleveland sounds like a go, barring any major catastrophes.

I'm glad you've got some things going, work-wise.

It sounds like you doing just fine running. Not really much less than some of us lately. The combination of busy family, lousy weather. and lack of motivation has made it tough the last few weeks.

Keep in touch and don't sweat it if it's an "all about me" post. We can take it.

Got 14 miles in today, but knee started to scream after about mile 7, so I walked the last 4 miles home. I was out for about 3 hours, which is a good enough effort for this day.

I will definitely be walking the entire marathon. I am OK with that :), because the running part of miles 8, 9 and 10 were quite painful.

Hey Everyone: :surfweb:

I had a good run yesterday. Our local Fleet Feet is sponsoring a "Winter Warrior" running club for the winter. It's just a way to get people to come to their weekly running groups. So I went to the "Distance Run" group yesterday at 8am. I was a little apprehensive because I had not run with a group since I did the "Learn to Run" group 2 years ago - I was thinking I wouldn't know anyone, I'd be last and running by myself, etc. Anyhow, it was great! The route was 8 miles and I ran it in 1:12/8:57 mpm pace. :cool1:

I met people that had run the MCM. In fact one woman I was running with had run it 2x, and her husband proposed to her the night before the marathon the 2nd time. I met another guy who had just run the Philly marathon this year, and said it was great. :thumbsup2

We got back to Fleet Feet after the run, and they had bagels and hot chocolate for us too! No charge for the group or anything. It was a nice run, and definitely gave me the push I needed to get out the door.

Dave - Great to see you back here again! I've been feeling very lonely as the only other person not running in Jan. Hope that things at work work out for you!:wizard:. Your Fleet Feet run sounds great - great pace!

Jodi - how was NYC?

Colleen - I'm sorry that your knee is bothering you. I'm sure you posted this before I joined in the discussion on this thread (as I realize that you were forced to not run MCM because of it), but is this a new injury or a nagging problem that has just gotten worse? I WISH you much :wizard: :wizard:

Steve - 20 miles on the treadmill?!?!? wow. I don't know what to say! Your post made me look at my training log to see what my longest TM run has been - 9 miles. And the comments I wrote about that run were NOT favorable. I can't imagine 20. I guess you really didn't have much choice though . . . (I also noticed that the last times I ran on the TM was in June for 3 miles and one time in May also for only 3 miles.)

Chester
- how did the race go?

Sara - I hope volunteering went well.

Lou - I hope you were able to get your LR in!

Cindy - Glad you didn't hurt yourself on your little tumble. Pretty brave out there running at 5:30 in the first place.

Hmm. . . Are you sure you meant to say "brave" and not "stupid"?

Big surprise here - I was actually motivated to run today!!! I ran 10 miles (I was thinking of running longer but was actually getting really cold). I felt pretty good on the run (certainly the best I've felt on a longish run post MCM) but I was completely exhausted after. :confused3 I've let my weekly mileage drop much more than I would like. I'm going to try to improve that next week. Never made it over to the gym this weekend to re-join, but this week looks pretty good weather-wise so I'll make sure I get over there next weekend.

Colleen - I'm really sorry that your knee won't tolerate a W/R. Still, good for you for overcoming it.

Steve - Pretty cool about the running club. I'm just not that social with strangers. I'd have done the whole thing and not known anything about anyone. Good job!

Cindy - Brave...Stupid. Sometimes interchangeable depending on the end result;) . I'm glad you had a good run and stayed on your feet.

I did my short 12 mile LR Saturday AM. It was yucky out when I got home from work so I hit the ol' TM. Watched "Howard the Duck" (free on On Demand). That's one bad movie, BTW. It seemed better 20 years ago when I saw it the first time. Maybe in 20 more years I'll be senile and it will seem better again:laughing: . And to top it off, the weather looked quite pleasant by the time I was done.

This week is an off-work week for me (gotta love it Jodi) but between kiddies' Christmas programs and tons of other stuff I'll be lucky to get half my runs in. I've got 20 miles on tap for the weekend and should be able to limp through that.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone.

Cindy - Congrats on the 10 miles. I kind of felt like you did this weekend.

Dave - Sounds like a nice group. I need to join a group like that because it is hard to run in the winter.

Steve - 20 miles on the TM sounds insane. Great job. I here you on the pain.

Jodi - If you didn't run I hope you had a great time in the city. I was in NYC yesterday for the Radio City show. Crowds were crazy in Manhattan but always nice to be in NYC around Christmas.

Hello to all I missed.

I got in 14.5 miles on Saturday morning. Finished in 2:11 for a 9:02 pace. Not bad considering I am still having trouble with this stupid groin pull injury. My biggest mistake was not checking the weather before I went out. I ran in a light rain for the first hour and then struggled the last part of the run because I was wet. Of course within 30 minutes after I got home the sun was shining and the temp got up to 49 degrees.
