Phantom of the Opera?

Alright.. what does this straight gal know then.. I loved it, I love anything in period costumes ala Victorian with a bit of French thrown in.. OK, I am now officially doomed over here, my new best friends hated Phantom. *sigh*

I loved Wicked too, did you like that?? Anyone?

Titanic (someone else actually saw that?!?) Well, it was really really cool when the stage tilted
Was a bit of a Rent head for a while (7 or 8 times, I don't remember)

I saw a few others, but they are no longer playing

and then i moved to PA brought a house, so B'way is a bit expensive right now

Phantom is a great musical costume show. Anyone ever noticed how empty the stage actually is and that most of the time there are only a few props and the rest is entirely dark.

(In comparison to sunset blvd. and cats its "modern theatre").

But to be honest, got see phantom if you like romantic costume thrillers with a little suffering (for more suffering go and see les mis ).

It also gives you a sort of a feeling what it was like in the 80s when the musical hype started. After all it was one of the first "drama musicals". Followed by cheap copies like "Jekyll and Hyde".

Has anyone of you ever seen "Dance of the Vampires" on Broadway?

Phantom of the Opera is one of the big, glitzy, hyped mid-1980s productions that also included Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Into the Woods. All are great productions and I would see any one of them again.

My only advice is to read a plot synopsis prior to going into the show. The first time I saw Phantom I had no knowledge about the storyline other than the most vague idea that a disfigured man haunted the Paris Opera House. You need more background to fully appreciate the show.

I will admit I prefer some more of the subdued productions found on Broadway including ixiedust: Wicked (AMAZING!), Avenue Q, and Mama Mia. I will always love CATS (my first Broadway show experience), Wicked, Chorus Line and Sunset Blvd. So no bashing those or I'll come at you with the big gun.

There are two shows I could not believe I saw: Titanic and Jekyll & Hyde. UGH.

I would have loved to see "Into the woods" on stage on broadway. Here in Europe it's mostly used for performances of musical schools which makes it unbearable in more than one way.

1) Most of the time they don't get the story but have enough roles to put all students into one show.

2) The german translation is so bad that the wit is gone and no one can get the story.

-Annie Get Your Gun - with Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat (Bernadette Peters is a goddess!)

-Kiss Me Kate - with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie

-Mama Mia - in London before it went to Broadway

-Aida - preview here in Atlanta before moving to Broadway

I REALLY want to see Wicked and Avenue Q, whenever I can get back to NYC (and stop going to WDW!)

I think any theatre is good theatre!

I really would have loved to see dance of the vampires, was it even open for more than a week?

The last show I went to was moving out the twyla tharp billy joel musical, I have to say I love billy so that was a treat enough, not really into the twyla style of dance but it was very well done.

I was just interested in the "dance of the vampires" because the original production is still running in several countries here in over Europe for more than 10 years now. And what I heard of the US-Version was that they completely rewrote the book and made sort of musical comedy which I can not imagine because it's a very dramatic story and not funny after all.

The only funny thing is that Jim Steinman used nearly the complete score he wrote for "Streets of fire" = very old 80s movie with Diane Lane.

Other question: Is Mary Poppins still on in New York. Saw it twice in London and though it was not what I expected I really loved the show.

It's one of my fave musicals of all time. My dh took me to it on our first date.

Beautiful music and sets, and am I the ONLY chick in the world who wishes Christine ended up with the phantom? (I also wanted Mina to end up with Dracula )

When I took my work wife to Phantom in NYC she gave me that look right before Christine goes off with Raul. She whispered to me "Is she really going to leave the Phantom?" and if you've ever seen the show you can probably guess we both started bawling right then in the theater

I also thought the Phantom really loved Christine, but let's be honest he has strange manners and tends to be slighlty agressive.

Just imagine what will happen if Christine forgets to clean his tuxedo or dinner isn't ready. If he's really angry you always have to stop him to throw fireballs at people and he's very possessive, too.

Yes, Raoul is boring but life with him might be a lot of easier. And you don't have to spend it in a wet cave which can never be cleaned properly and will definitely increase your chances of getting reumathism.

She made the right decision.

Mike--Thanks for pointing me to such an amusing discussion/vent!

Rick--As a vegetarian myself, I usually make sure I know something about the food before I'm willing to pay for it. But, I rarely encounter it listed on the information about the event. And, I wouldn't think it was insensitive to leave off information about whether or not you were providing celiac-safe food, etc. Perhaps, next time, you could send out a special version of the information to her alone that includes every possible contingency, concern, special need, etc. Then, she'd have to work to come up with something to complain about.
