Hello,

I'm hoping there are some fellow seamstresses here. I am very much a beginner and I am interested in purchasing a basic sewing machine. I've looked at basic Singers and Brothers sewing machines, both of which seem to have some great reviews and some really horrible ones as well. I found a Pfaff Hobby 1122 machine which is a little more expensive but they seem to have great reviews all around. The model I'm looking at has no adjustable presser foot pressure, I'm not sure what that means. Is this something I should want in a machine? I'm just looking for some advice right now. If you know of another great model, or make let me know, please!

Pfaff makes a really good machine, and I don't think I have ever heard anyone say anything bad about one. I have been sewing for 10 years and I don't think I have ever needed to adjust the pressure on my presser foot, so I wouldn't worry about it not having that. What to look for depends largely on what you are using it for. Is it just for basic sewing or do you want to get into applique, etc? One thing I would want no matter what I was looking for would be a one step button hole. I use that feature all the time. Another is my one touch stitch length and width settings.

Have you ever seen the DISboutique thread on the Family board? There are a lot of seamstresses of all different levels and abilities. It might be a great place to ask.

I am not an expert seamstress but I have sewn for many years. I don't think that I would get a machine that doesn't let you adjust the pressure. This adjustment is needed in order for you machine to handle different types of fabric - more pressure for heavy fabric, less for light weight fabric.

Two years ago I had to replace the singer machine that I had used for 25 years. It was a little traumatic but I ended up deciding between a Pfaff and a Bernina. Both of these companies make great machines but I went with the Bernina because the seller in my area seems to provide better support. If you can afford it I would buy a better machine from someone in your area who also offers instruction and support.

Very good advice, thank you ladies :) I would be using it for basic sewing, nothing too fancy. There is a Bernina store here as well, that I haven't even checked into. Though online, someone reviewed the store and said they offer great support, that may be another option. The store I went to the other day also has a husqvarna viking machine coming in soon.

I think I'll head over to the DISboutique thread on the family board and as there ask well, thanks for the tip ;)
