pet question

We take our 50+ lb dog (she's a shepherd/lab mix) with us on every trip to Disney and put her in the Ft. Wilderness kennel. Prior to Disney outsourcing the kennels to Best Friends Pet Care, guests were required to walk their pets 2-3 times a day. Best Friends now does the walking, but we still go over and walk her several times a day just so we can play with her. They have always been absolutely wonderful, and although it is difficult to leave her at night (especially since she's afraid of the dark), she never resists staying at the kennel. Best Friends is building a pet resort/spa, which will be located somewhere near the golf course close to Ft. Wilderness.

If this doesn't appeal to you, there is a Residence Inn not too far from WDW, located just behind The Crossings shopping plaza, which is relatively new and allows pets. We have stayed here once before and loved it. You may want to check with them. Their website is http://www.marriottresidenceinnlbv.com/accommodations.htm

Thanks for letting me know about that kennel option! It is great to hear someone with a good experience. Do they allow reservations? I thought I read on another thread that the kennels don't take reservations.

Try http://www.petswelcome.com/ They have listings by area for hotels; rental houses; etc. I just took a peek and some of the rental houses sounded pretty good.. first one I glanced at had a fenced yard and doggie dog fitting up to 100 lb dog! If you go with a hotel..always call the hotel direct to double check their rules. Some might say, for example; two dog limit; under 40 lbs each..but we've called ahead and they've allowed our 70 lb grey with no problems.
That site also has listings for kennels; vets..etc.. by area. And don't forget; :goodvibes make sure your fourfooted travel companion has a number you can be reached at all the time while you're traveling..JUST in case!

I just checked. The service I use here does this:

Bed & Biscuit (private in-home overnight dog boarding with our pet sitter)

Need more than traditional pet sitting? Our private in-home dog boarding service requires that we maintain a kennel license with the Georgia Department of Agriculture. This means each dog boarding property is inspected periodically by the Department of Agriculture inspectors to ensure compliance with Georgia kennel law. Additionally, each dog boarding location is in full compliance with the regulations of their county of residence.

Our pet boarding care standards exceed those of the state and counties of Georgia. Be assured that each of our client-pet guests, your beloved dog, is matched to a home and dog boarding family, becoming a member of their family during its visit. We do not routinely kennel your dog unless you request it. However, your dog may be crated or otherwise secured to protect property while the stay-at-home caregiver leaves to run routine errands. We also offer dog daycare.

In our care, your pet . . .
#private home boarding; your dog stays in a private home.
# is matched to pet sitter and his/her private home.
# is not routinely kenneled or crated.
# will exercise and play with friends.
# becomes a welcome temporary member of the family.

Your pet's pet sitter . . .
#is licensed by GA Department of Agriculture.
#is inspected by GA Department of Agriculture.
#is not employed outside the home.
#is never overbooked with client-pet guests.
#will require proof of immunizations.
#readily provides references.

It's not in your home but it's 24 hour service for your pet. IM me if you want the website for the service. This is for the Atlanta area but they might be able to help with references for places near your home.

Hello, you cannot stay on Disney grounds with a pet in your room, you must use the kennels, and then why bother to bring your baby along anyway?
There are numerous hotels that allow pets in the Orlando area, I went on expedia and did a modified search for amenities and checked pets allowed and found many nice hotels. In fact there were over 100 hotels available. Some were dumps, but many were really nice like Marriotts, Residence Inns, etc.
There is also a condo , Summerfield Condo in Kissimmee. I have spoken to staff there and will be getting info on the place. You can also rent a private home or condo, many allow pets too.
I too, have a pet, a 15 pound ****zu, he is a cutie. Of course he cannot go to the parks, but we will come home to him at night, and go for walks and he will have us to snuggle up with at night.
We go away for two weeks, so we arent in the parks from morning till night, especially in August. THe heat is brutal. we prefer to lounge around , enjoy the pool, and we think our pet will be happier to have us around, even if its only half day or all night.
Last time we went away he didnt eat for a week and pinned away with depression. My mother was with him and he still was so sad we were gone. we vowed to take him this year, and stay off site.
Good Luck!
Dee

I know how you feel, though I don't have the same weight problem with my doggie...he is a 5lb chihuahua and he just does horribly when I board him. We got married in WDW in February and boarded him for the 5 days my parents would be in orlando with us...he is still afraid of buildings! Everytime I bring him into a pet shop or someone's house or something he cries and cries like I'm going to leave him there. It breaks my heart  When we got back to Disney in May, I'm leaving him home and having my aunt check on him once a day.

That being said, your dog is probably much nicer to people than my dog, so if you boarded him, they would probably pay attention to him and love him and such. My dog wouldn't let anyone come near his cage and they even put a "WILL BITE" sticker in his file :scared1:

Is there family nearby that your dog could go stay with? Unfortunately our nearest family member is 5 hrs away, so at this time we don't have that luxury. However when we move back to IN to be close to my family, my parents and siblings will have no problems pet sitting our 2 dogs and cat.

My dogs get kenneled at their vets. We love, love, love this place and they are so good to our dogs. Our cat gets left at home and we pay a teenager we know to come in and check on him twice a week.

Our older dog knows the difference between when we've been gone a short time and when we've been gone longer. Although about the only difference is a few hrs vs a whole day. He's a nut after a good 9 or 10 hrs from home. Our chocolate lab on the other hand, you could be gone for 10 minutes and she thinks you've left her for a week.

Our cat is a nut when he's been left for a week. He won't leave us alone when we've walked back in the door. He's in your face for at least the next 12 hrs!!!

Good luck in finding a place to stay where your dog can be too. If not ask around about kennels in your area. That's how we found our vet/kennel.

OK so I realize that none of the disney hotels allow pets and I have been researching hotels in the Orlando area that allow pets but my problem is that none that I can find allow pets over 80lbs. Well my child/dog is well over 80 lbs. We thought instead of kenneling him back home we would travel with him (he actually loves to travel) and then use the disney kennels during the day and then have him with us at night. He does well in kennels in the day as he is used to doggie play groups, etc but he is very spoiled and very attached to his family and I am just not sure that he would make it a week or more without us. I am also not sure that my hubby could make it a week without him since he takes our doggie everywhere with him. Our doggie child is simply not used to being without us. He really is a full member of family, which I know a lot of people don't understand. But I really need advice here. I can not deprive my human child of a trip to Disney but what do I do with my overly spoiled canine child? If anyone has any experience traveling to Disney and finding not only a pet freindly hotel but a pet friendly hotel for BIG pets pleae help.

if you wanted to stay on-site, you could rent an RV
(www.gorving. com) and stay at the FW campgrounds in one of the pet loops. That way your precious could "stay home" while you are at the parks , (as long as you trust him not to destroy the rv:rotfl: ) and be there to sleep at night. Just a thought.

Do you have a weimaraner???? Just wondering b/c your doggie sounds like our weimie. Very attached and very much a child to my dh and I. Not to mention her separation anxiety.

We live in Atlanta which has become the city of doggie daycare/boarding facilities. We seached forever and got so many recommendations before we finalized with one. We even did doggie daycare 3 times a week for 2 months leading up to our first big trip away. By the trip she was loving it and did awesome. She knew everyone and everyone knew her. She had doggie friends and everything. She actually ate all her food while we were gone which was huge. I think the stress of trying to do the unknown kennel would have been worse for her then staying for a week without us. Going to someplace she didn't know and be put in a kennel would have been crazy. Maybe you can find a place that she's comfortable at near your house. Our place actually never uses kennels. They have dens which are cube like rooms for each doggie.

Can your dog stay with "doggie cousins?" We have several friends with dogs that we can exchange pet sitting with. The dogs have a great time having overnights with their doggie buddies - its like sending the kids to grandmas for the weekend, the kids barely notice we are not there.
