Pet Peeves......

Then I guess what we need to do - in all seriousness - when participating in threads like that is point out that the issue ISN'T about grammar, spelling, or typing. The issue is the issue - whatever the OP's topic is :teeth:

The grammer thing doesn't bother me. What gets me are people who write long posts in one giant paragraph.

I'm setting myself up for a flaming here ... but ...

I cannot stand for people to type their entire post

IN ALL CAPS!

It is like they are screaming every word!

Drives me nuts...

:tiptoe:

Oh, you're GOOOOOD! You're also correct. Other examples would be people who choose pets because the animal is 'cute' or seasonally-appropriate, again without first doing any research into temperament, care, etc.

Up until recently, I had been working in a pet store. And without fail, every Easter, people would come in to buy baby bunnies or looking for chicks (which we did not sell). Despite all the PSA's in the newspapers, on tv, in the store to NOT buy easter animals on a whim. Luckily, we were allowed to refuse sales in cases like these. Not all stores allow staff to refuse sales.

I just realized that this whole thread was about grammar. That's what I get for posting when I am dead tired. To stay in topic (sort of, anyway) I admit I am the queen of grammatical and spelling errors. I try to edit my posts before I hit the 'Submit' button, but I always find mistakes afterwards. Many, many mistakes. So other people's mistakes never bug me . However, when someone typs lyk ths whn txtng, it always makes me cringe inside.

Although improper grammar and spelling do make me cringe a bit (I am an English teacher), my biggest pet peeve is when people tear others apart to make themselves feel superior. Nobody here is a Pulitzer prize winner. We're all here to discuss things, so why make somebody feel bad because this might be an area where they are weak?

Thank you, you said it better than I ever could. Threads like this are my pet peeve.

You've posted nothing about which you should feel embarassed. Yes, this thread is primarily about the original poster's pet peeve, but another poster interjected her/his own literal pet peeves and you picked up on that :teeth:.

my hubby... nebo... has written 5 trip reports.

he and I are both... grammar freaks.

however... when he has written trip reports... I have annoyed him .. to no end.. about various grammatical ....ooops... anhd then he has responded with.." you knoW what .. Diane.... they KNEW whaT i MEANT"
HE AND i GO BACK AND FORTH... CONSTANTLY .... it's a pain in the butt being married to an intelligent person....' in the END,,,, IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!!!... so what!!!???
It drives me nutz!!! if someone dangles a participle.

if someone doesn't say exactly what they mean to say/// shhheesh.. don't pick on people just cause they didn't pass grammar 101.

we are all here to help each other
.:cloud9:

:thumbsup2

My pet peeve is people who let the use of improper grammar bother them to the point where they complain about it.

Not everyone has propper grammar, no need to belittle them about it.

And some just don't care.

If I can still understand what point they are trying to make I can overlook the grammar mistakes. Heck, I probably make some of my own sometimes. Nobody's perfect.

Interestingly, I attended a workshop that addressed this. It was all about technology and how teachers are worried that the basics of education (things like reading and writing) will become obsolete in the face of all the new technological advances. The speaker argued that reading and writing will become even more important as it's the only way people have to differentiate themselves when not face to face in the real world.

Like it or not, you will be judged on how you present yourself, and in the case of a virtual world, how you write is your presentation. While it may not matter much on boards such as these, he argued that there will be more and more situations where we will interact virtually and that there will come a point where it does matter. His thesis was that writing will become a sort of class system, with those who can present information professionally being taken more seriously.

I'm not sure I buy all his arguments, but it did present some interesting things to think about.

I tend to agree. I know these boards are informal and understand that we all have brain cramps and typos but when someone uses granite, instead of granted, 3 times in a paragraph, I'll assume that they're not too bright.

FTR, I would never call someone out on their grammar, unless it was an obvious typo and I was just kidding around with them.
