Pet Peeves......

The following both really annoy me:
1. When "definitely" is spelled incorrectly.
2. When there isn't a paragraph break of any sort in a long post. I can't read those at all!

I know my grammar isn't perfect, neither is my spelling but I try. I usually read what I wrote and edit it as needed. And if there's a little red squiggly line under the word chances are, it's spelled incorrectly.

I cannot spell "definitely" to save my life. In fact, I had to look at the correct spelling in the quote just so I could type it here!! :lmao:I'm fairly positive I've probably invented 30 different spellings for that word, and I'm also fairly positive I spell it differently every time I type it!

I can handle to/two/too being mixed, their/there/they're being switched, even here/hear being switched. But there are two things I can't deal with:

1. I can't stand trying to read a post that's ten pages long and has no paragraphs. It goes on and on and on and on and on... you get the point. I don't even bother reading them, I do not want to have to decipher your special code just to read about how much you love Mickey Bars. Paragraphs are your friends!

2. Worse than reading a post with a lack of paragraphs is reading sentences that sustitute "are" with "is." Seriously, Bill and Bob is not going anywhere. Bill and Bob are going to the movies.

I constantly misspell 'grammar' and it's not becuase I don't know how it is supposed to be spelled. My fingers simply prefer to type 'grammer'. :)

The more I read these and other discussion boards, the more I think proper grammar and spelling are becoming obsolete. It's strange because around 10 years ago most posts were well-written and coherent. There was a recent thread on this topic and it was hypothesized that it's due to constant texting. I guess that's possible because although I don't text much, I do use IM quite a bit and I tend to make so many errors when IM'ing. Thankfully, though, I haven't lost my ability to compose a somewhat coherent post. :)

I'm now waiting for someone to point out the all the spelling/grammatical errors I have made. ;)

I, too, am willing to give people a pass on most things. After all, I've read some of my own posts that have "their" instead of "there." I do know the difference, and I change them when I realize the mistake. However, some poster always misspell the same word or make the same mistakes. You then realize the poster really doesn't know any better. Still... that doesn't bother me.

what does bother me is when people take no time to use things like capital letters periods commas etc it makes it so hard to read and those posts i will just skip over and not read it just hurts my brain too much to do so lol

I guess I'm a weirdo because I like it when people make grammar mistakes and such. It helps me with their "voice". :rotfl: Yes, I make up voices for you when I read your posts. Everyone gets their own!!

For example: No capitalization is a monotone voice. No punctuation is a hurried voice. :rotfl:

I'm going to go get a life now.

When did the use of "I" change to "myself"?

When I went to school (the Bronze Age, I believe :lmao:), we were taught that, for example, "Stefanie and I went to the mall" was the correct phrasing. Now it seems like *everyone* is saying it as "Stefanie and myself went to the mall."

OMG that's frustrating!

"Stefanie went to the mall." "I went to the mall." "Stefanie and I went to the mall." You wouldn't possibly say "Myself went to the mall" - that sounds absurd!

I'm hearing and reading this, seemingly, everywhere! When, exactly, did this come to pass as being grammatically correct?

I prefer to use the word "I," myself. :thumbsup2

Well, I'm probably jinxing myself by posting on a grammar thread :lmao: but here are a few of my pet peeves:

People who use apostrophes to make things plural. This one is like fingernails on the blackboard to me.

People who use the complete wrong word. Not just the "their/there/they're" mixups, but things like "loose" for "lose" as those don't even sound alike to me. Do it once, and I assume it's just a typo, but when it continues through the whole post, I just wonder if they know what they're talking about. I recently saw a post where someone had something stolen, and they used the word "stollen" over and over in the post. I was so hungry by the time I finished reading it! :rotfl2:

My latest one is "payed." I didn't even know this was a word. I actually looked it up the other day because I have seen it so much on this board. It turns out that it IS a word, but it has something to do with ropes and not money. It is also an obsolete spelling of "paid." So I guess it's not totally wrong, it's just weird! I always have to do a double-take to figure out what the person means when I see "payed."

That's my biggest pet peeve, also. Drives me insane! The "would of"/"should of" another poster mentioned also bugs the snot out of me.

My biggest pet peeve on the DIS is the word "dinning" instead of "dining." The word is DINE. You take off the "E" and add "ING." No extra "N" required.

I can't stand the phrase "I seen" or "he seen". It's SAW people, you SAW something happen.

When did the use of "I" change to "myself"?

OMG this reminds me of another one. EVERYONE that I work with has started saying "Irregardless" including the general manager. Um WTH? That's not a word. Regardless is a word. Everytime someone says that I want to staple my ears shut.

ETA: Lol, I posted this and when I reread the post I was mad at myself for using that word because it's not a word. Oy!

:worship:
Every grammatical error mentioned by all previous posters is on my list of pet peeves. After many years on message boards and social networking sites, I have learned to overlook most of them. The only thing that truly makes me insane now is run-on sentences. Honestly, I've read posts (here and on other sites) that don't have a single punctuation mark in them. I usually stop reading about two lines in. Lack of punctuation makes my eyeballs angry. :headache:

Or random punctuation marks: My apples, are green. what color are yours?

Although improper grammar and spelling do make me cringe a bit (I am an English teacher), my biggest pet peeve is when people tear others apart to make themselves feel superior. Nobody here is a Pulitzer prize winner. We're all here to discuss things, so why make somebody feel bad because this might be an area where they are weak?

I agree 100% with you on this one. I have a friend who used to do this all the time. It drove me nuts so finally one day I said something to him. It took a while but he no longer says it. He bugged me right back though because I say 'member instead of remember and that drives HIM nuts LOL.

I get annoyed with "free dining." So many people write it out as DINNING. I would never have thought to spell it like that, but SO many people do!

Mostly things like goldfish in bowls, bettas with no heaters, bearded dragons on sand, chameleons in glass tanks.... overall, basically when people do no research whatsoever about pets and are either unknowingly (or worse, knowingly and simply not caring) killing their beloved pets. It drives me absolutely mad.
Oh, you're GOOOOOD! You're also correct. Other examples would be people who choose pets because the animal is 'cute' or seasonally-appropriate, again without first doing any research into temperament, care, etc.

One example of that I notice frequently is "defiantly" ;). My specific annoying word is "convenient" in all its forms. People frequently omit an entire syllable; although in fairness, at least doing so doesn't (usually) result in an entirely different word with a completely different meaning!

I don't see anybody in this thread 'tearing apart other people'. I see posters sharing grammatical errors that irritate each of us.

Criticizing ('tearing apart', attempting to appear superior to) other people would be, for example, posting IN the free dining thread that "the word is diNing, diNNing isn't a word, why can't you spell, don't you know what you're talking about?".

I don't recall saying it was happening in this thread. This is a thread asking to share our pet peeves and I shared mine. :hippie:

And are you trying to say that people don't do exactly the same thing you posted in your second paragraph? I believe you've been on these boards long enough to know differently. As soon as somebody dares to enter a debate with an unpopular opinion, the grammar police come out in force to mock the poster for poor spelling and/or grammar.
