Pet Peeve: Seen vs. Saw

The one that really gets me is interchanging words with other words. Like a pp posted...advice and advise, than and then, to, too and two, except and accept. And the one that drives me nuts is borrow and lend. I see this on Judge Judy a lot.:lmao:

"My friend borrowed me $500" instead of "My friend lent me $500".

Drives me crazy too. The worst one for me is the incorrect use of loose, lose and loss. One of the weight loss boards I use is full of posts from people wanting to loose some weight.

There's one posted over and over on the DIS that makes me nuts. I could OF gone to that park. I should OF done something else... That OF thing makes me want to scream! Do people really not understand what they're saying??

Let's face it, the people who could learn from this thread are probably not going to read this thread!

LOL! You are so right!

Oh, I read it. But I have bigger things in life to worry about. I don't care if I sound uneducated. Gives everyone something to talk about. ;)

My best friend uses "seen" instead of "saw" all the time. It makes me cringe every time.

My DH uses "seen", and I'm always correcting him. But, I tend to correct everyone (at least in my head). English is a big subject for me. I had one English teacher in my life that really drilled everything into my brain.

It's noticeable but cute, I like when people show who they are and where they come from through speech patterns and accents.

I like youse, seen, Y'all, You know what I mean (locals in Pa do this one), Mam/Sir, wicked, Bouboula, delic, there are so many and I love them all. These little language quirks are like spices and herbs added to a dull salad, they add pizazz and give people color. I like artsy flair in my language, no doubt why I adore Shakespeare.... he made up words all over the place.

How about 'that' instead of 'who'

"People that want to go should sign up by tomorrow"

I have a friend who sends out a newsletter for her
business and she uses that all of the time,
and she's a former teacher :scared1:

There's one I've been noticing more often and I don't know if it's a typo or not. Using 'and' instead of 'an' ie. "We saw and alligator."

Makes me absolutely nuts to hear someone use "seen" when they should be using "saw." My dear MIL, who holds a Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania says it all the time. For almost 40 years, every times she says "I seen it" or "you know what I seen at the store," I want to scream "you are an educated woman! Speak like one."

As for "youse," "y'all," "ya know what I mean," and others, those are different because generally they are unique to a geographic area. Using "seen" instead of "saw" occurs all over, and it's just poor grammar.

The other thing that drives me nuts is when someone wants to "axe me a question." MIL uses that one too! UGH!

However, in the spirit of full disclosure, I have a bad habit of saying "a whole 'nother," instead of a "whole other." I'm sure that drives some people nuts, too.

But in my mind, the #1 grammar mistake that just makes my skin crawl, makes me think "this person genuinely doesn't know any better" is ALOT. That is not a word. Not in any way, shape or form!

I don't even like using "seen" when it is used correctly "I have seen..." I try to reword it so I don't use seen, unless I am in a hurry and I seen I was late for something :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Come to think of it, no one I know talks like that. It sounds ghetto.

:confused3

You must be fun at parties ;)

(kidding!)

Does it drive anyone else crazy when you're talking to someone and they'll say something like "oh yea I seen that one" instead of "I saw it/I've seen it"?

So many people I know do this, even people who I went to school with from elementary though high school, we had the same education :rotfl:.

Yes, one of my biggest pet peeves!!!!

Agree! I see it all the time on forums.
