Has anyone used the daily pet kennels available at Fort Wilderness? What are the hours? Do you need a reservation? Are the Air conditioned? unfortunately we will just be making a day trip this time!

The Fort Wilderness on site kennel is designed for your standard house pets. It will probably be best to leave your tiger at home. The kennel does NOT accept reservations at all, so don't bother trying. Current 2004 rates are $6 for a day stay and $9 for overnight. If you check in for the week you will generally pay the overnight rate. If you plan on bringing your pet to the site, they must be kept in a designated pet loop, which includes the full hook up 800, 1600, 1700, 1800, & 1900 loops or the 300 or 700 "preferred" loops. The 500 loop is an overflow preferred pet loop when additional pet sites are needed. Three "pet walk" areas include a canal pet walk off the 1800 loop, a canal pet walk off the 300 loop and a nice wooded walk behind the 700 & 800 loops. You must drive them to the kennel, you can NOT walk them to the kennel, nor can you walk you pets out of the pet loops themselves.

The FW kennel asks that you stop by to walk them twice a day yourself, but you can pay an additional $2.50 (each walk) for the FW employees to take them out. Most of the cases are stacking models, one over the other in side an air conditioned area. Interior dividers can be removed to allow space for larger dogs.

In addition to these cages which are indoors, they still have a number (I'd say 15 or 20) of outdoor cages/runs. While they have ceiling fans over them it does get quite warm during the summer.

The kennel is open from 7:30AM to 10:00PM, but if you are out late the staff at the reception outpost can walk over to the kennel to get you dog to allow them to come to the site for the night.

Don't you need to bring your pet's shot records with you? In most kennels, you need proof that your pet is current on shots......

thank you for responding. We have always camped in a pet loop but this trip we are bringing our daughter to college(no camper we had to pull uhaul) and we just wanted to do something FUN for one day before we leave. We have always seen the kennels just not ever needed them before. Of course one day is not enough but I know we will be back. thanks again.

Good question. I assume the answer is yes, but I can't ever remember showing Natasha's papers when we checked in. We do always carry them - but just can't remember having to show them.

Some things to keep in mind when camping with your four legged friend(s) can be found on my Camping With Your Dog web page.

If nothing else, equip and keep a doggie first aid kit around when away from home.

Yes, you must show proof of vaccination at check in. The information is kept on a data base on their computer system, so if you come back some time, you just need to update if necessary. Our dog's shot record summary is included on every receipt from the vet's office.

By the way, we have used the kennels for the past 7 years. They are sparkling clean and the staff is fantastic. My wife is very picky about where the pooch stays, and this met her seal of approval without complaint.

OK, time to add/update my web page.

The new kennel hours are 7:30A to 8:00P

For the safety of your pet and others, it is required that dogs be current on their required vaccinations which include:
  • Rabies
  • Parvovirus
  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis
  • Parainfluenza
  • Bordetella (kennel cough)

Many vets list some of these on thier records as DHP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza) or DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus)

For other questions, you can call the kennel directly at 407-824-2735

Should the FW kennel be full, Disney maintains four other kennels on property:

  • Ticket & Transportation Center
  • EPCOT
  • MGM Studios
  • Animal Kingdom

Thanks for posting the answers..........I had not even thought of the "kennel cough".

The Kennel Cough vaccination is very important! Espeically now - the state of Florida has a kennel cough epidemic! It's been on the news - many kennels have been affected.

Thank you Ronda,
I have an appt. for tomorrow morning to get our dear pet her shot.:bounce:

Actually for Bordetella (kennel cough) it's not a shot. It's a nasal spray. Natasha would rather have a shot
::yes::

Don't forget to bring the dog's food too.

Just took our beagle in for his FW vaccines. He is no fan of the nasal spray, and was sneezing for the rest of the evening. They used to have a Bordetella shot, which he got, but I guess they are discontinuing it in favor of the spray.

Our cocker spaniel, Sparky, always sneezes so much after the nasal spray, it's a wonder any of it stays in there! LOL!

Our boxer, Cookie got her kennel cough vac. today.........she's been sneezing all afternoon. She also needed a few other shots while we were there. She was so good. If only my son would be that happy to go to the doc for a shot:eek:

This topic is all new to me!! We are picking up our adopted Pomeranian tomorrow from the humane society!! I even just called CRO and changed my ressie (which I had to change last night to one year out due to DH's cancer diagnosis) to include a "pet loop"! :bounce: (Planning for this trip, even though it has been postponed by 1 yr is doing wonders for everyone's spirits).

I have a question which might of been answered before but like I said, I just never noticed!! When we are in the parks all day, is it ok for the dog to be alone inside the camper? You don't have to board them daily??

Thanks for any and all help!!

Many people leave their pets in their RV. No different than leaving a pet at home alone as long as there is food and water and comfortable living conditions.

You must be prepared for a possible mishap.

I have heard of instances where the pet owner has been required to board their dog because of continued barking when they were away.

John

Note: We just became parents to a 4yo Persian cat that became homeless thanks to Charley so we will be staying in pet loops now.

Always Quiet: It's ok as long as it's a hard-sided camper. Dogs cannot be left in pop-ups by themselves. :)

Post pictures of your new baby when you get a chance! Poms are so cute!!
