I'm researching pet insurance for Onlsow, our newly adopted Lhasa:cool1:

So if you have it which 1 do you use? Does it have a wellness care rider etc?

I'm, looking to cover emergency care and as much routine care as reasonable.

TIA

I have pet insurance through 24PetWatch (www.24PetWatch.com) ... they have a flexible range of programs to choose from ...

Congratulations on your new furbaby :goodvibes ...

Another option is to make regular contributions to a pet emergency fund. This is a great option if you can diligently set aside a specific amount each month. The problem with pet insurances is that the premiums dramatically increase when your pet gets older, making it much more expensive to cover your dog during the time when he is more likely to suffer major health problems. Also, some insurances have riders for certain health conditions that plague certain breeds. Some pet insurances require you to pay up-front and then file a claim to get your portion covered. Make sure you do your research.

Know that a surgical procedure can run into several thousand dollars. Diagnostic procedures such as ultrasounds and X-rays can be a couple of hundred. Most pet emergency rooms require an up-front fee before any treatment and this can be several hundred dollars as well.

I don't have pet insurance since it tends to not offer great coverage for older dogs. My older dogs were relatively healthy until their final year of life and they were seniors.

Yes, I understand that. Fortunately for us, his estimated age is about 2yo so we have awhile b4 he becomes a senior doggie. I think for us insurance would be a better i think than an acct. for him. Because even with what we could put into a bank acct. it would likely come quite a bit less than the vet costs, even just for the usual stuff.

Trust me, I understand vet expenses. Just make sure you research the various policies and get the one that suits your family the best. We got a 2 1/2 year-old last December, and, although she is healthy, vet bills run up quickly--spay, vaccinations, heartworm and flea preventatives, anal gland expression :scared1:....

Good luck and congrats on the new family member. :thumbsup2

I think pet insurance is a great idea! I wish we had gotten it for one of our cats before he had a complete urinary tract blockage and then was diagnosed with diabetes a year later. Those two things have cost us thousands. Now he doesn't qualify for insurance because of his pre-existing conditions.

TY. Going to research the insurance carefully b4 we decide. And I hear ya about bills. We've been to the vet twice already for the city license requirements and then a week later cause he seemed to be attacking his hind leg. Now he has meds for a skin condition. No real big expenses but, its the routine stuff that adds up.

Currently he's going crazy cause we just finished his bath:lmao:
