My bichon will have been at the groomers for 7 hours. I'm wondering how long it takes your dog to get groomed. I'm wondering if its time to find a new place. She goes here once a month I tip 12.00 per visit and my dog hates being there!

Its a chore each and every time I take her there. I feel bad that she has been there for so long. I did call them just now and they said 3:30 which will be 7 hours. I'm getting really mad about it and I'm wondering if I should ask them what it will take to get my dog by lunchtime.

I have a bichon mix (mixed with lhasa apso). The groomer usually has her for no more than 3-4 hours. I think 7 hours is wayyyy too long.

I do my own grooming actually, a Cockapoo here.


It used to be like 5 hours between drop off and then pick up time.
I had told them that I did not want him crated AT ALL after he was "done" so they allegedly, called right away....I think its the drying time.

Meanwhile, I left after my dog was Burned, yes Burned on his hiney....I called my vet (she ocmes to our home) who told me that the clipper was probably too HOT after being used for so long (whether that was him or for other dogs is unk) , either way, I was VERY mad and have never gone back (and I DID tell them why!)
Now I do it all, and he is SUCH a trooper, great dog, Just LOVE LOVE LOVE him....but he has such allergies

I have a yorkie/maltese mix, takes an hour to groom him. Also have yorkie/maltese mix puppy who looks full yorkie. She is only 5lbs compared to his 12lbs, but she hasn't been to groomers yet. I would imagine she would be under an hour. Grooming = bathed, haircut, blown and style, cleaning and plucking hair outta ears, trimming nails, and plucking butt hairs. Ouch, but no little hangerson if this is done.

Well at my previous groomer, she worked with me regarding MY hours. I dropped them off at about 6:30am on my way to work (in another town). She grooms out of her home. I don't really know what time she opened for business (8, I think). Sometimes my dogs would be ready to go at 2:30 and sometimes she would tell me that she was running late and to pick them up at4.

I have a different groomer now who tells me that it takes about 1.5 hours for my toy poodle and about the same time for my really big long-haired mutt guy.

Different people operate differently!

actually they just put them in a cage till they get to them..............my guy is usually there 5 to 7 hours..................you tip them??????????............no way...............35 bucks a month is plenty..........at least that is what i pay...........it is a bunch of groomers together at a vet clinic, the person who does the work does not wait on you or give your buddy back.........it is a receptionist.

My Sheltie is usually there about that long. He gets a "puppy cut" (uniformly short). If I keep up with his groomings (every 3 months) it is $35. He hadn't been for 6 motnhs and it was $65. He doesn't especially like going, but he is a big 'ol chicken.

Not to high-jack your thread, but I just want to say that I'm at my witts end with trying to find a good groomer, yes 7 hours is too long for a groomer to have your dog .
I pay out of my nose to have my dog groomed plus a 10.00 tip for a dog that is razor burnt up to the hilt. He was so sore last time that it took him a full week and a half to recover. I'm frankly sick of it.

Aww, poor dog that must hurt, how does that happen? Do you have your dog shaved? I don't blame you for being fed up. I have my dog shaved for the summer and never has he been razor burned or cut/nicked. Im surprised too because he does not like to be groomed.

Yes, 7 hours is way too long! A Bichon like yours who is groomed monthly should take 1 hour tops!

So what is happening is that your dog is being groomed on an assembly line. The way most grooming salons are set up is that they groom all the dogs in stages. All dogs get a pre-cut, then they are all bathed, then blow-dried, then final cut. If the salon has many dogs to do, that will take hours. Meanwhile, all the dogs are hot, stressed & generally aren't walked, fed or given water during that time.

At my summer home, I have a groomer who comes to the house in a mobile unit complete with a tub/running water, electricity etc. She grooms all 3 dogs individually start to finish, so each dog is back into the house within 45 minutes to 1 hour.

At my winter home, I haven't been able to find a groomer who does this, but found a groomer who only does 1 dog a time at her salon. So, each dog is also in & out within the hour.

At no time are my dogs in a cage. They are hand blow-dried. I am very against cage blow dryers, where it gets much too hot & there are risks of burns.

If you ask around, you will find a groomer who offers this type of personalized service. I actually learned of my groomer from another salon after I called almost every groomer listed in the Yellow Pages looking for this type of service.

I called a couple of groomers who say (at least around here) that unless you want to pay up the nose (I already pay $55 a month jeesh) it may take a while whereas they do the "assembly line". I've been going to this place for a few years now and I really like them its just frustrating and I feel so bad for Jaz.

There are times when she's done b4 noon and when I ask to have her done by noon or whatever they are pretty good then once in a while a day like today. They seem to take good care of her and I get a puppy cut for her also because she likes to snuggle under blankets when she sleeps and we don't want her too hot.

I book about 6 months at a time because her shop is sooooo busy. I just wish it didn't take too long.

I think from now on I will request what time I want her to be done.

That does seem a bit long. When we had our yorkie, she LOVED any and all people. She was a bit hyper, I will admit. After a few visits to a new groomer, the groomer asked us if she could give our yorkie benadryl to calm her down!! Needless to say, we found a new groomer because I didn't trust that other lady to not drug our dog!

Our boys now (Bostons in my sig) need no grooming and I LOVE it! I'll never have another long haired dog!

I found a great groomer for our Bichon, one who actually has a Bichon of her own. Can't tell you how lucky I feel to have found her! She has her own shop out of her house, nothing assembly line about it. Charlie is usually there about 1 1/2 hours, and he goes every five weeks, and he also gets a puppy cut. She charges $44, and I do tip her well. Seven hours just seems wrong!
