At least in Lake county, those with pets do not have to anguish over their fate.

Three pet friendly shelters are also offered for Hurricane Frances storm preparations. Pets must be brought in a pet carrier that is marked with the pet owner name, address and two phone numbers, have all current shots and must be taken care of by their owners. Owners should bring minimal pet food and water. The pet-friendly shelters include:

Astatula Elementary School, 13925 Florida Ave., Astatula (352) 343-1334
Lost Lake Elementary School, 1901 Johns Lake Road, Clermont (352) 243-2433
Villages Elementary School, 695 Rolling Acres Road, Lady Lake (352) 751-0111

That's great. I always wonder what in the world we would do with our pets if we had to evacuate for some reason.

Good for them. I could never leave my pets behind.

Just had to share this since it really made me happy.....yesterday in our paper (St.Petersburg Times) they told a story of one of the nicest resorts on St. Pete Beach ........The Tradewinds. Normally they do not allow pets, but given the circumstances of all the evacuees to this area from the east coast, and from reading in the past how many people will not leave their homes without their pets they opened their grand ballroom as a make shift kennel. Of course the pets needed to be crated but they divided it for cats/other pets and the dogs on the other half. I thought that was great, since I know that I would not have left my critters if I were in that circumstance. I just think that there should be more shelters that accept pets, not making people make a choice between their pets and their safety. Many think that pets are just animals and not worth risking your life for but I believe and I think that many others believe that they are their family and all that many of us have, and just as important to us as your children are to you. It was for resort guests only. I will write them a letter after the storm and thank them.

I am glad to see more shelters are allowing pets in for the hurricanes. I think they are realizing that this is one of the reasons people choose not to leave their homes, they don't want to leave their pets behind. I could never leave my pets behind.
