Pesos or dollars?

You'll find they will take your dollars, but give you change in pesos (usually and a very bad rate of exchange).

Merchants will HAPPILY take dollars at a terrible exchange rate.
(They don't post the exchange rate, they post price in dollars, price in pesos, and assume you won't do the math.)

That being said, if you aren't spending much money, it may not be worth the effort to get the right currency.
(On our last trip to Mexico, the last day I just spent dollars, rather than trying to "come out even" getting pesos from the ATM.)

I made the mistake of changing to Pesos for our first trip. They much prefer dollars

You can also get pesos on the ship if you don't want to risk the ATM. I don't know how good the exchange rate is, though.

And be aware that pesos use the same currency symbol as dollars ($).

The best exchange rate is to use a credit card and have them charge in Pesos. Just make sure you use a card that doesn’t charge foreign exchange fees. Most vendors accept credit cards. Those that don’t will take dollars and are happy to haggle prices.

if you use an ATM the bank will ask you to accept the first exchange rate. Decline that rate and they give you a better one. Even ATM’s haggle in Mexico.
The ATM’s at Punta Langosta seem reliable and are connected to major banks.

For a day trip on a cruise there probably isn’t a need to get Pesos.

Thanks for the info on ATMs. I have never seen ATMs with that feature (never been to Mexico, though).
