What are your thoughts on personalized clothing? I've always thought that I would never want my child to wear clothing with his name on it- something in me justsays it's 'not safe'. I simply don't want a stranger to know my childs name. I just think of the scenario of a stranger approaching my child & calling them by name to gain their trust & my child going with that stranger. BUT... With all that said- I have my eye on some darling custom personalized shirts that are simply must haves for our Disney vacation. What to do what to do!??

I'm not comfortable with it either- you could still order the custom outfits and leave their names off.

I agree ~ I recently purchased *on etsy* a darling "Minnie Mouse" pillow case dress for DD ~ the "demo" dress had a black Minnie head with a yellow bow and a name embroidered in yellow ~ I asked *she agreed* for the Minnie head to be a Mickey cupcake *yellow bottom/black top* and the words Birthday Girl embroidered below ~ it arrived yesterday and looks great!

I made personalised matching shirts for our Disney vacation for us and our 6 year old. Normally, I avoid stuff with his name on - but at Disney, he's never out of our sight, and he is old enough to know about "stranger danger", so we figure it's OK there :)

We only do personalized stuff in Disney, once home the T's go in a bag until our next trip. If anyone is around us longer than a minute chances are they know my kids names anyway, between me and dh talking to them or the kids themselves poking at each other. :rotfl2: Not to mention as a pp mentioned, they aren't out of our sight and are very aware of stranger danger. ;)

Just a thought, but you could always do a Mickey head with your child's first initial inside it or you could make the tie-dyed Mickey shirts (directions are posted on the DISigns forum).

I embroider my daughter's name on just about everything. Guess I'm a bad mommy, but she likes having her name on things... clothes included.

Agree! We don't normally buy anything with the name on it however at WDW our children are NEVER out of our sights. We keep them in our sights at all times. We all wear matching red tshirts with a mickey/minnie on them with our name. We get lots of people that make great comments on them.

I felt the same way for quite a while, but then I realized that I'm saying their names so much (and pretty often, loudly) that it doesn't matter so much that their names are on their clothes, since if people are around me, they probably already have heard my children's names. But if you are uncomfortable with it, don't do it. You don't want to ever think that you did something that could potentially harm your child.

I never put the name on a back pack or sent them on the bus or to walk to school with personalized stuff.

But.. I never minded it when I was with them as it would take a stranger about 5 minutes to figure out eveyrones names if they really wanted to anyway. Jane do you like that zeebra, Jane do you want to ride the carosel, Jane do you want an ice cream? You get the idea :)

I also talked often about what I wanted my kids to do/not do in certain situations and how to handle "stranger danger". Nothing replaces talking and teaching.

FWIW my kids loved having a nametag at WDW and the attention from the characters and CM's.

I do not like personalized clothing. Aside from the stranger issue names on clothing remind me of uniforms.

I'm with you. I cannot bring myself to put DD's name on anything. Sure people will know her name from us saying it... mind you she has an uncommon name and often people hear it wrong the first few times... so that is in our favour! LOL

And I agree that they are ALWAYS with you at WDW vs going to school etc. So I can totally see why people feel comfortable and power to you! :)

That said, it is so common for kids to get separated at Disney in a split second... and at that point I would be frantic enough without the realization her name would be there for all to see. (I think we'll be going with the dog tag idea though and I might Sharpie her skin somewhere unnoticable where she can point out.)

Sure, it is nice to have the extra attention, but it gives me the willies more than that is worth. That's just me though and I'm somewhat of a worrywart.

If you are looking at stuff that is 'personalized' but anonymous, you could have the name of the character on the shirt or the name of her fave character. Or 'Birthday Girl' as PP suggested, 'first trip,' the year etc. If you had Mom and Dad shirts, you could always go with 'daughter', 'kid number' #... etc.

My thoughts: if anyone wants to know my child's name, all they have to do is stand near us for a couple of minutes & they'll hear me say it, over & over.

So I have gone ahead & put my kids' names on tons of stuff...shirts, backpacks, hats, etc.

We never do it, ever! My SIL just made my ODD an adorable shirt, but it has her name on it, so it immediately became a night shirt. We do initials. All of my dd's names start with the same letter, so, I think it is cute.

I know people feel differently, but, I'm not taking any chances.

I think it's cute too. I wouldn't think twice about personalizing my children's things with their name, especially if it's only being worn at Disney where they will be with me 24/7.

I think it's cute as well. But then again, I also live in the land of monogramming/embroidered names (ahem..the South :) I'm not careful about speaking their names in public and they are always right beside us so it's not a safety issue for us.

For our trip to WDW, we're thinking of personalizing for our family . . . each person will choose a character and all 5 will be on each shirt . . . kind of like Olympics rings. :)

Oh my goodness - Everything that my daughter owns has her name on it - especially at Disney!

After spending 2 minutes around my family you would probably hear me says my kids names a few times.

We usually go decked out personalized.
