How many DISers have personal websites?

I do… mainly a vanity thing. Personal photos, some op-ed pieces, some AI-generated music...

I've got one. Used it when I ran March Madness basketball pools and used it as a recruiting site for DS. Haven't made any changes in ~3 years. Should dump the name and service, but "what if.. "

No, I don’t. I may have one in the future but that is still in the pre-planning phase right now.

I have multiple domains. Used not only for websites but email as well. I am surprised more people don't have a personal domain for their email.

This is also part of the reason I have a personal website - the domain name, something memorable for my eMail address(es). I have multiple forwarders @ (insert-domain-here.com) all of which point to my main eMail address. Sometimes I need to supply an eMail and would rather not broadcast my main eMail address and don't have the time to set up sock-puppet Hotmail/GMail accounts - a sacrificial eMail address that can be deleted yet goes through to my regular address 'til I say so is worth its weight in gold!

I have a couple of websites for things I make for The Sims 1, which still has a following and active players believe it or not. The sites are free to build and update. I use a Yahoo email for both sites in case anyone wants to get in touch with me.

Back in the day of geocities.

I rarely do anything with Facebook in the more modern times anymore. I used to post too much, but in the past few years I haven't participated much.

Nope never had a personal website, don't see the point. Thought that was the purpose of places like FB so other people could 'friend' you and find out what you are posting. Not sure how others would even be able to find your personal website which seems to defeat the purpose of being able to 'share' your info.

If you have a personal email you never give out how would anyone know to email you???

Yes I do. When I was a kid / teen I ran a lot of different "fan sites" for various topics... Lion King, Sailormoon, David Spade. Started out with Geocities/AOL/Tripod/Angelfire, then later on my own domain (it was nocturnica.net). As I grew older they all went away but I do still own a domain name associated with my name for email, work sandbox/ previewing client websites, extra photo file backups and so on.

I give them my "sacrificial" eMail address, which redirects to my main address. If things go kaput, I just shut down the redirect.
But how does that help?

Let's say you have your main email (main@email.com). You don't want to give that out, so you set up "safeties" (safety@safety.com). Any email sent to safety gets passed on to main, and you read the main. I got that part.

But, oh no, "safety" got compromised. So you trash it and create "safety2@safety.com". But everyone who WAS using safety no longer can, and you need to inform them that your email has changed. Do I have that right?

Oh, well there's multiple safeties based on what I'm doing. That just seems like a PITA.

It's easy :) Each redirect takes a few seconds to set up and you don't have to use them. I recently had cause to abandon one as someone was "stalking" me (sending me endless eMails asking for my address etc). Since it was an address for dodgy people in the first place, I don't miss it.

I took the explanation to mean that whatever was associated with (in your example) safety@safety.com wouldn’t be used anymore, such as a website that gets hacked or compromised and is shut down permanently. Although if a person is maintaining a database of customers and their email addresses, it would be simple enough to just do one email to all with the new instructions.

I have three email addresses. My main one is the one I use for personal business. My secondary one is for my job search. The third is the one I use whenever a website I am browsing but not buying from wants an email, so that one just gets hit with junk email I can delete. If something goes wrong with one account, I can shut it down without affecting the others.

In my case I happily give out my domain based email address.

I have been using the same email address for almost 30 years. The email portion is hosted by Google using the Google For Your Domains in the beginning and now I pay like any business that uses GSuite/Google Workspace.

Google Workspace does a great job of filtering spam as it is in effect GMail but with my own domain.

I also have a domain hosted with Microsoft. They matched Google For Your Domain for a period of time letting you host email for free. Now that domain is still free with Microsoft but Google forced me to start paying.

If you have signatures turned on you will see my main family web page link.

Great photographs!

I loved the Sims 1. Played it forever before finally switching to 2. I still play 2 from time to time. Never moved on to 3 or 4.

As for a website...nope. I do have a blog that I write in once in a while. But it's really just for me.
