Personal Bag when Flying...

My girlfriend is flying in about a month and had a question.

USAIR states that your personal bag cannot exceed dimentions of 36" total. If she has a bag that fits these requirements, can she put her laptop, camcorder, camera and everything into this bag?

She didn't want to put it in the carry-on bag incase it had to be stored overhead so I suggested the personal bag you can bring. Is that ok?

If all the stuff you mentions fits into the personal bag, go for it! The airline doesn't care what is IN the bag, as long as it fits the size requirements.

Keep in mind that 36" is measured 3 ways, including depth. My laptop bag is 15 x 12 x 4. That's 31" and just fits my laptop. Might be hard to add a camcorder and camera and be within 36". Also keep in mind that if she takes a purse, it also has to fit in one of the bags, it can't be carried separate if she is designating another bag as her personal bag.

The calculation would be length x width x height, correct?

The bag is 16x6x14 and laptop is 12x1x10, which would still leave plenty of room. We already put it in the bag to make sure it worked. She has a very small camcorder and camera.

I just wanted to make sure it would be ok to do it that way...

If it's within the measurements when full, then you should be OK. Someone on our flight home last month stuffed their carryon so much that it would not fit in the overhead. The FA was nice enough to give her a bag to empty some stuff out so that it would fit.

This would be the personal bag.

The carry-on will have clothes and be under the seat.

Would it being a problem putting it in carry-on if it's under her seat? I didn't know if something like that should be kept in the personal bag or the carry-on...

The one under the seat has to slide fully under, it can't be obstructing your feet. I would keep your laptop and camcorder under the seat if you can, sometimes people move stuff in the overhead around, it could end up under or on top of something else.

The airline does not care which bag goes under the seat and which bag goes up top. It's your choice. Be forewarned, though, on some flts the overhead space goes fast, and they will try to get everyone to put everything under the seat. If they can't fit everything, they'll start checking bags.

I travel every week with a 21 inch rollie and a laptop bag. The laptop bag goes under the seat and the rollie overhead. I NEVER put anything of value into the rollie in case it needs to be checked.
