people that watch your sodium

Okay, you sent me scrambling to my freezer and cupboard, because we eat lots of frozen and canned veggies.

I have frozen Schwans green beans and C & W edamame, the label says they have zero milligrams of sodium.

I have canned Great Value corn, beets, and peas all zero milligrams of sodium.

How is avoiding them going to help lower my salt intake?

I only buy fresh vegetables and fruit. So, when I said frozen and canned foods I was referring to ready made meals, sides, snacks, etc. Sorry but it would never occur to me to eat canned veggies. Gross!

You weren't the first person to "catch" me on this. I guess I really need to overthink everything I type, or the DIS police will get me. Good grief.

I have high blood pressure, so have been searching for salt in my food for the past 7 years after getting the lower your salt intake lecture from my doctor. We don't salt when we cook, we don't have a salt shaker on the table.
I have unsalted peanuts and unsalted almonds for snacks. I only drink Diet Rite soda, with zero calories and zero milligrams of sodium.
Of course, the first two Blood pressure medicines my doctor gave me actually raised by blood pressure by 25%, so maybe I just have a weird genetic made up.

For both of my pregnancies I was on a sodium restricted diet-blah.
A few things that I remenber:

Onions are loaded with sodium as are diet drinks.

These are ok:
Mrs. Dash
Shredded wheat

I read every single label. The good thing was my sweet husband went on the diet with me. That made it much easier.

Onions and diet soda are not loaded with sodium.

Onions have 2 mg sodium per half cup and diet sodas have something like 25 mg per serving. If you were on a sodium reduced diet of 1500 mg daily, that would equal .0013 and .0167 percent of your daily limit respectively. Both are low sodium foods.

My OB gave me a list and on the list as having high sodium were onions and diet sodas. Maybe it was because my diet was super restricted. I just posted what he had on the list. It surprised me and being from south Louisiana where we cook with the "holy trinity", celery, bellpepper, and onions, it was very hard to manage.

I cook from scratch often. Stay away from cans(although I do buy some san marzano tomatoes in the can and the sodium isn't as bad as regular canned tomatoes for some reason?

So avoiding cans- (soup, veg, ect) , processed, frozen, basically everything that someone else makes. :rotfl2:

It's not something I did overnight. I cut one thing out at a time. And then you do get very sensitive to salt- I can taste it miles away.

Now I do use some sea salt in my cooking. not iodized so I think it's not as terrible for you.
Good luck and healthy life!

Okay, checked the cans and bags. Amazingly the canned veggies say "Corn, water" "Peas, water" and the beets say "beets, water and sugar". Frozen green beans say "green beans", and the Edamamie says "soybeans".
I'm getting tired of running back and forth to the freezer and cupboard!!!

Sorry but it would never occur to me to eat canned veggies. Gross!

Well I've been married 28 years, and it took me a long time to get my wife to eat frozen or fresh vegetables. She's an Air Force brat, and her dad was stations at a lot of remote locations where all you could get was canned veggies and fruit.

Funny my kids (they're not really kids anymore at 19 and 23) will NOT eat fresh or frozen peas, only canned. I have to admit it took me a while to adapt because I grew up with fresh and frozen peas. But to be honest, the only food on this planet I don't like is black licorice.......and I'm not a big fan of lamb.

My OB gave me a list and on the list as having high sodium were onions and diet sodas. .

Like I said, I drink Diet Rite, it has 0 milligrams of sodium.

Oh, just pulled my dried diced onion container out of cabinet, 0 milligrams of sodium too. Not sure why tried onions would have 0, and fresh would have a high level.
