I personally think that more people are traveling - like back before the terrorist attacks in NY. With more people traveling Disney is selling more rooms to the avegare Joe who unlike us savvy DISsers know nothing about codes and rates. So the rooms are filling up and they need not offer as many discounted rooms.
I think we will be going back to the days when a discount was way out of the norm....
But remember this is JMHO!
I would say you are correct. For those of us you have gone for over 25 years, prior to 9/11 and even before that, discounts at Disney were few and far between. They did not need to discount to fill rooms and it seems that trend is back.
Actually I do know how they allocate rooms for free dining. It is strickly based on occupany rates and yes they make last minute decisions. I spoke with someone last week, on the team that decides, yes we have it, no we don't
He said they are evaluating the current level of bookings and at this time, with bookings being so high, that if they do offer it, it will be for a much shorter time period than in the past.
He said the Bouce back promotion and the UK promotion were very successful and bookings at rack rate were up over last year due to the Dreams promotion and package bookings were up.
So yes booking rooms on speculation does hurt your chances of getting free dining. If you plan to cancel if you don't get free dining, then that contributes to the lack of the very thing you want.
Discounts are given to fill empty rooms.
