People Mag source on WDW

Disney is the top place in world for an attack. I choose not to live my life in fear because if I do then they win. As for security if they need more I am all for it sure it may take time getting in the parks but you would be safer knowing they are doing these checks. I am sure they have undercover security in the parks for our safety.

I was think about Disney Springs today and how easy it would be for someone to go there and just get onto Disney Bus Transportation to a Resort. They will really have to start cracking down on security in the Downtown area where a lot of locals come and go in that area as well as start beefing up the security to make sure only Disney Resort Guests get onto the buses.
Why would they go to a resort?

It would be so easy to blow up a bus. Any bus. Any where. Oh well. Give it your best shot. I'm still goin!

I would not say we dodged a bullet. Many innocent people lost their life as a result of this horrific act of terrorism. Had he carried this act out at Disney or anywhere else the loss of life would be equally tragic.

Dodged the bullet was MEANT at Disney.

Equally tragic? I would say possibly more. He may not have used a gun. You can take out many more the other way and a gun..

Disney needs to step up security, not only at Disney Springs, but all the parks, resorts, etc. Disney World is a perfect target for one of these crazy lunatics. At any given time, especially for the night time spectaculars (Fantsmic, Wishes, parades), there are thousands of people in any given location. I don't know much about Disney security, but I can say that when I have gone to the parks in the past, the only thing that was checked was my bags, and unfortunately, I never felt that they did a thorough job. It was always a very fast search. I hate to imagine it, but one of the theme parks being attacked would be a night mare. Worse than we could imagine. Some of the news channels are now reporting that this crazy person had accomplices. So if his accomplices got away, and there is reports of him scouting WDW a few months ago, it makes me nervous to think his buddies are still out there somewhere free and that there is a possibility that they could of been planning something else besides the night club. Im still going to WDW no matter what. But, if Disney has to make some inconvenient changes just so their guests stay safe, then so be it. At least I'll feel better about bringing my kids into a park.

I am sure many terrorists have scouted Disney Springs and other Disney targets. The company is symbolic of American culture and would be the sort of place evildoers would like to target. I am thankful that nothing has happened yet.

I believe the article states his wife told federal authorities Sunday that he had scouted Disney Springs and Pulse prior to the attacks. He was in Orlando for 4 days prior to the attack, not just his April visit...of course, her statement means she is an accessory to the crime, if she knew he was scouting venues and didnt alert authorities. If terrorists attack, it comes down to where you are in relation to
their weapons. Those closest to the backpacks in Boston died. An AK 15 in an enclosed space is bad. But the whole point is these radicals (of any nature: political, religious, mentally ill) can strike wherever. Just live your life, be alert. Dont give into fear.

Did anyone notice that in this article it made it sound like they both checked out Disney World back in April yet in other articles the wife claims that she isn't even married to the shooter anymore and she left him back in 2011. Not sure I can believe what she is saying.

I think there are two wives. One that left him back in 2011 and one that supposedly just separated from him recently. I'm guessing that she will be in trouble if she truly knew that he was scouting these locations for something like this.

With that said, I'm not sure what you can do. I've often thought that WDW would be a huge target and as other have said, its truly a symbol of America and the "Western" lifestyle. Here's hoping that WDW security has a better handle on things then is apparent to the eye. But no matter what, as long as we want our freedoms, we'll always be more vulnerable.

Like the previous person said, he had an ex-wife, who he was married to for only a few months, and a current wife, who he had a child with. The ex hadn't spoken to him in years.

According to CNN, "Cell phone tower data indicated he spent several hours Saturday at Disney Springs -- the shopping and entertainment complex inside the Walt Disney World Resort -- just prior to the attack, law enforcement officials said."

I do not think this source is credible. She divorced him in 2009 after four months of marriage. No way was she with him recently from the interview I saw. Not that he couldn't have had an eye on Disney, but the ex-wife would not have known anything about it.

It wasn't his ex-wife, but his current wife. They have a young child.

I completely agree with you. But I believe what what the previous poster meant was that we, the Disney community could have POSSIBLY just as easily been the target instead of Pulse night club, in light of recent news. (If true)

While no lost life is more significant than another, I believe the sentiment is that a specific community we all identify with could have been affected much more. Possibly members of this very board or people on vacation to a place we all love would be personally mourning instead of mourning out of empathy for our country and our fellow countrymen.

I think if this attack had taken place in WDW, whether at Disney Springs or one of the parks or resorts, this board would look much different than it does. My heart is broken for the city of Orlando and the entire country and LGBT community specifically. But I am grateful we are spared from the reality of dealing with a terrorist attack happening at a place many of us call a second home.

What situation are you trying to avoid? There are numerous, easy ways to legitimately access a resort, e.g., room reservation or restaurant reservation. Personally, I don't want to scan my magic band to get on a bus.

As others have expressed, there are countless places where hundreds or thousands of people gather that could make easy targets, e.g. municipal parades, public parks, street fairs, etc. I support reasonable diligence to protect against dangers, but I recognize that all dangers can't be avoided and that, if someone truly wanted to, they could harm many people in a single moment despite reasonable precautions.

Or you can like... drive to the resort or park at the transport center? I don't think there is anywhere you can take a bus to that you can't drive to yourself?

I don't see how you can Prevent non resort guests on buses. What about your non park guests and their ADRs. What bout non resort friends or family wanting to visit their people. I don't see how that would work

My question is WHY did she not go to the police when he was scouring locations for his attacks?!?!
I can think of a couple of reasons.

1. At the time, she didn't realize what he was doing - but now, looking back, she remembers some odd behavior or a strange thing he said.

2. She agrees with his ideology but has just learned that he was living a double life as a gay man himself & is only too happy to share what she knows.
