...okay, I must be missing something. The feeling that I'm getting here is that most DIS'ers DON'tT agree with the decision to have the flag at half-mast and that it's because they don't think of him as a hero. Who said that it's because 'government' (or whomever) is deeming him a hero? :confused3 They are simply doing it out of respect (that's what I'm guessing anyhoo) for someone who dedicated 46 years of his life to a highly-accredited educational institution. Whether you like/dislike/agree/disagree with the man, no one can deny that he was, in his own right, somewhat of an icon. I certainly don't view Joe Pa as a hero, but he's not Jack the Ripper either....

The campus police has no record of this happening and Paterno did not say that under oath.

That 'rumor' started when Paterno was getting hammered by public opinion.

.

Completely untrue- he reported it to Shultz who was in charge of the police department, that is absolute fact

And lets not ignore that Shultz was the Sr, VP of Business and Finance. The campus police is a dept under him, but JP reported what he was told to a college exec, not a campus law enforcement officer. Same with McQ, neither went to the actual police, campus or otherwise.

Not quite true, he reported it to a vice president who overseas the campus police, he didn't report it to the police, the vice president is not a sworn law enforcement officer, therefore he has zero police powers, he should have notified the police, not a University Vice President.

It's pretty easy to split that hair after the fact but if someone is officially "in charge" of the Police Department and you know that to be a fact and you report something to them is it THAT unreasonable to feel you have reported it? Did Shultz say "you need to call one of MY sworn officers" OR did he say "thank you for letting me know I'll handle this"
If you don't know that answer you can't really demonize Joe. I'll be the first to admit I don't know exactly what happened and with Joe's passing we never really will

So, he was worried about his job, his reputation and the school's reputation. All valid reasons for turning a blind eye to boys being raped.:rolleyes1

There are no excuses, period, for not following up on a reported child molester when you see nothing has been done.

And yet we are seeing page after page of Paterno supporters doing that very thing... :sad2:

Having the flag fly half mast is reserved for those special men and women who earned that privledge. Mr. Paterno is not that man.

except for the tiny little fact that we don't know and it has not been proven what he knew. We do know he reported what he did know to the person in charge of the police.
But don't let facts stand in the way of believing what you want to believe
You obviously feel a deep need for for this to be black and white.
It never will be

But isn't it black and white that boys were abused after this incident? To me that clearly means that those who knew (all that knew not just Paterno) did not do enough.

As a resident of the state of PA, I am disgusted by Corbett's latest action.

We know that he did the bare minimum. Did he do just enough to cover his own butt? Apparently. Did he do enough morally? Not by a long shot.

Agreed. I think more will come out eventually. I think there is more to the whole thing and who knew what. But why wait to have all the facts? That takes all the fun out of it.

To make that judgement you would have to have all the facts. We don't
Can you tell me what Joe knew? If you can't how can you make that determination?

Regardless of the scandal I think it's inappropriate for a football coach. I live in Pittsburgh and am so sick of hearing about his death. It's all that has been on the news the past 2 days. I could understand yesterday, since that was the day it happened but then today it still goes on and on.

I've thought for a long time that he was out of it. Before the scandal, anytime he was interviewed I couldn't understand why he was still coaching, I just assumed he was a figurehead and someone else was calling the shots. I really don't think he fully understood what was going on.

Completely untrue- he reported it to Shultz who was in charge of the police department, that is absolute fact

Paterno reported the incident to Curley. Curley denies that Paterno said it was of a sexual nature.

Schultz met with McQueary and says that he remember McQueary saying Sandusky touched a boy's genitals, but Schultz did not know if that was a crime "he says."

Paterno stated last week in his interview that he didn't even know that men could rape boys. Now, come on.

They're all lying. They all lied. Paterno hired a high-price PR firm as soon as the Sandusky stuff started hitting the fan. Who does that when they have nothing to hide? He does not deserve the honor of having a flag at half-mast.

More coming out eventually & more people be implicated won't take away the shortcomings of joe paterno. Trust me no one is enjoying this.

Can anyone tell me what exactly he did for anyone outside of Penn st and/or college football?

If you care to take a look at the GJ testimony, Joe can tell you what he knew in his own words. In case you don't feel like doing the legwork, I posted a link:

http://sportsbybrooks.com/transcript-joe-paterno-grand-jury-testimony-29933

I did read the entire GJ report but I visited the link above to refresh my memory of Joe's specific testimony. I find this particular section just soooo offensive:

"I ordinarily would have called people right away, but it was a Saturday morning and I didn’t want to interfere with their weekends.
So I don’t know whether I did it Saturday or did it early the next week.
I’m not sure when, but I did it within the week."

A boy was being "fondled" in a sexual manner the night before and Joe didn't want to interrupt someone's freaking Saturday??? Wow, just wow.

Not really. Just the same few posters. Look at the poll. The proof is in the pudding but some are blind to the facts.
