Has anyone else heard this is closed for refurb? If so, my daughter will be SO disappointed! Was the only thing she really wanted to experience at Castaway Cay. Seems that busy summer time cruises are a really bad time to do this refurb.

I did read something about a refrub but I can't recall the dates. I will see if I can find it.

It looks like it will be closed from May 15th,2016 - June 15th, 2016.

My cruise documents for June 11th Western state Pelican Plunge will be closed on our visit 6/17 so maybe longer or else we may get lucky and be first on it.

Honestly May-June is the best time for them to do the refurb. From Jan-April you had 4 ships calling on CC. Starting in May, 2 of those ships have moved to other home ports and will no longer visit until the fall. Most schools are still in session until early June so by the time you get to full peak cruising time the refurb is complete.

This is horrible!!! Our first cruise is set for May 23 and my 8 year old daughter is so excited about pelicans plunge! Is there really anything else for her to do???

This is our problem. It was her choice where we went on vacation this year, and she chose a Disney cruise, and SPECIFICALLY said it had to be one that went to Castaway Cay so she could enjoy the Pelican Plunge! I really hate to break her heart and tell her about the refurb. Hoping she will still have fun snorkeling and parasailing. But she will be disappointed either way.

We have visited CC 5 times and only on the last visit did DS get round to using Pelican Plunge and that was only for about 3 slides! He spends lots of time playing in the sea and on the other wooden and ropes area, plays in the sand, we play table tennis and basketball, volleyball etc, explore, look for lizards ... There is loads to do, we stay on the island all day and have never done an excursion.

We did a couple of slides but our DD really enjoyed the snorkeling more :)

We visited CC several times before Pelican Plunge even existed and found plenty to do. Usually, we will go over and do a slide or 2. The last time we cruised in the summer, the line was so long that it didn't seem like a good use of our time in paradise. I think we went once. It's fun, but it is certainly no deal breaker (at least for us). My kids prefer the other structure in the water with the ropes, etc.

There are many awesome things to do on the island and I am sure that your daughter will find something fun. :)
Snorkeling, floating on the tubes or rafts, biking around the island, checking out the airstrip and observation tower, there is a stingray adventure that my son LOVES since we did it a few cruises ago. Not to mention the crystal clear blue water and white sand (really more like sugar) beach.

If you decide to go back to the ship after a bit of beach time, the Aquaduck usually has a MUCH shorter wait time to ride. That is pretty exciting too. :)

Have a great time! We are sailing on May 30th on the Dream and are really looking forward to a break.

*I* would definitely be bummed about this, forget about the kids LOL. We love PP! But, last year a lot of it was rusty and just looked like it needed a refurbishment, so glad they are doing it just in time for our July cruise! That totally stinks for your daughter though :( Definitely rent the tubes or mats, and she can also play on that other structure by the family beach (not sure of the name, and it's only open during high tide I believe). Maybe rent bikes? Or even an excursion, like the waverunners! Those look fun!

In my opinion, these dates need to be posted at the time (or near the time) itineraries are released. I know that is a bit in advance, but with regular upkeep on off days, I'm sure they could figure it out. I'd be very disappointed. Many of us on these boards are in the minority who might cruise again and have another chance to experience it. At Disney's prices, all should be functioning (of course excluding unexpected "breakdowns"). Maybe offering a voucher for free tubes, bikes, or a smoothie at CC might be a nice way for DCL to compensate.

I doubt that would happen. Disney offers no compensation when you go to the parks and rides are down for rehab. I would think it's the same on DCL. Not all activities are guaranteed to be available on all cruises, even at the same stops.

I agree that I wish they would have released this at the time the itineraries come open, as we would have booked a later cruise since our dates weren't set in stone. But since paid in full and already asking the time of from work, they are definitely set in stone now!

And we are still very much looking forward to the cruise, and I know there are plenty of other things to do, just hate to see my DD disappointed over the main reason she chose said cruise.
