We stopped on the way to the Fort at a Flying J in Resaca, GA, and across the street was a fresh fruit stand. They had locally grown pecans in the shell, and we bought a bag. They were the best pecans I've ever had.

We stopped at a few more farmers market type places on the way back, but were unable to find any more pecans in the shell. I can't find info on the fruit stand in Resaca on the internet, but I am thinking of calling the Flying J and asking if they know how to get a hold of the people at the fruit stand!

I thought I'd ask here first. Does anyone know where I could order some good non-commercial pecans in the shell? Organically grown would be even better. We don't have anything like that around here, and I'd love to order some!

Thanks

Check out www.LanePacking.com They are located just 5 miles west of I-75, at Fort Valley, GA, We buy all of our peaches & pecans there, and have done so for about 5 years. They are fabulous. Stopping at the plant is fun. You can take a tour of the orchards, visit the packing plant, and they have all sorts of gifts, fruits, some veggies, and a restaurant. They even have RV parking, a playground, and a pet park.

This is no help to you, but we have a pecan vendor at our local flea market. Yep!! He has a pretty sizable booth indoors and does nothing but shell and sell pecans! His shelling machine is probably older than I am (and that's old), but it gets the job done. His wife sells the sugar/cinnamon coated pecans and they are like none I've had anywhere!! Gorsh!! I'm drooling just thinking about them!

Funny... I live about 15 miles from there...Every kid in this area goes there for hallowen to see the pumpkins.(schools daycares).I did not know they had a website!:surfweb:If your ever there in fall take the hayride and see 10000's of pumpkins...and hear the history and different types that are grown there.

Ah brings back childhood memories from 50 years ago. We live in Biloxi, Ms and not only did our home have pecan trees but Keesler AFB had them everywhere around the old WWII barracks and along some of the road and we often just picked them off the ground. These were the paper thin shell types and not the much thicker ones sold at most places today. They are called paper shell pecans IIRC.

we had a couple of pecan trees in our backyard when I was a kid...my mom ate them...but none of the rest of us ever really cared for them all that much....but when youre mowing the lawn theyd shoot out of the side of the lawnmower like a bullet....my brother had a skill of keeping the lawnmower exit aimed at me from every possible angle in the yard....he was one mean son of a booger!!
