LOL Ok so our pear tree has gone crazy this year with fruit. I've already got a bunch sliced and prepped for making crisps, what else can I do with pears??? I hate to just toss them but there are soooooooooo many we just can't eat them all....

pear preserves, pear sauce (like apple sauce but with pears)...just google 'preserving pear recipes'...you can can them in small batches iwth Ball's new home preserving mini=kit....quick and easy.

Ship some to me!!:lmao: No pear tress in Florida!

We had a late freeze that zapped every single last one of our pears. :( We usually just eat our pears fresh, give some to neighbors and family, and some my mother uses to make pear relish. It's really good!

Pear butter. I think its in the Ball cookbook. Like apple butter or pumpkin butter. You cook the pears down until its very thick, with spices and some sugar. Its delicious and you can can it to save for yourself or use for Christmas presents.

I'm in the same boat--drowning in pears. I made a pear spice bread yesterday. Last year I made a pear-cranberry pie, which I'll be making again soon. I've also done pear cheesecake (a layer of chopped pear on the bottom of the cheesecake basically) and pear cookies (chopped pears wrapped inside the cookie or pinwheels with pears in the middle). Check the taste of home site for other recipes. Hope this helps you.

cant you can some in simple syrup? mmmmmmmmmmmmm free fruit for a year! YAY!

Bag 'em up in paper lunch bags and sell them for $1/bag. just do honor system with a table and a basket in front of your house.

Pear Sauce is my favorite - I love it so much more than apple sauce... And it takes a bunch to make some cause it cooks down. I usually freeze it cause most of my canning experiments fail, but I highlly recommend it. And I vote for SHIP ME SOME PEARS!!!!!! They are soooooooooooooo expensive here!

I would love to send them out to everyone who wants some, unfortunately I don't think I can..LOL I'm not sure they would get there in good shape. :)

As for selling them in front of my house my street is very small and people don't drive down it unless they live here or are visiting someone who does so I don't think that would work. Otherwise I'd do it! lol

thanks for the recipe ideas! I got some good ones!! I have NO clue how to can so I guess I'll be looking that up, I had thought of that but hadn't researched it yet. I was thinking a pear cake too. :) I'll take more ideas too if anyone has them. :)

Pear Bread! My grandparents have a tree that is always laden with pears. I always make Pear Honey and Pear Bread. I froze a bunch the year before last to have to make pear bread all year. It is so good!

No idea...but I drive by the Ball plant everyday. I didn't know they made anything besides jars.

Might seem a bit silly to some, but....have you considered donating some to your local food bank? If you really have that many to spare, it might be an option.

Our local news station just did a story about how the food banks don't get a lot of fresh fruit and veggies and how some places are starting community gardens and donating some of the produce to their local food banks. Which is what made me think of it.

on the same line as this one, take them to a local church You don't have to be a member to make a donation! most church's have outreach programs with various pantry type institues or if nothing else, ususally know of at least 1 family "in need". Our church supports a local battered womens & children shelter. only the pastor's wife "knows" where it is, but anytime we have food from an event or anything we would like to pass on to the battered womens shelter, we let our pastor's wife know and she takes it to them.

Pear pie. My Grandma used to make a Pear Pie with the pears from our trees that I thought was wonderful. It is similar to apple pie and very easy to make. Here is the recipe:
Bartlett PEAR PIE

For crumbly top mix together: 1 cup sugar
½ cup flour
½ teaspoon cinnamnon

Work in 1/4 cup butter until crumbly.
Spread 1/2 this mixture into bottom of pie shell. (If making own pie crust, - first line pie plate with crust).

Fill with 4 cups sliced fresh pears.
Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons lemon juice.

Spread rest of crumbly mixture evenly over fruit.

Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes then at 350 degrees for 40 or 50 minutes longer until brown and bubbling. Let cool.

Serve with ice cream or cheese.

I think donating to a local food bank or family shelter is a great idea. I do this with my summer csa when I know I won't be able to use it. I'm in the same boat with tomatoes this year. Usually I freeze them up for the winter but this year I've been giving them away. Everyone has been loving them so I figure I'm going to freeze a few batches but not as much as I used to.

How about just taking them to work, church, etc. and putting them out for the taking. I love when people bring produce!

My mom has a huge pear tree and made pear pie filling this year and canned it. Not exactly sure of the recipe, but it has sliced, peeled pears, cinnamon, corn starch for thickening, sugar. That may be it. Then she cooks it all together, pours it into jars and processes it.

Then you just open the jar, pour into pie shell and top with pie crust and bake. YUM!

If you put this in quart jars and tied with a ribbon, it would be a great Chirstmas gift.

Pear Butter I think you can get the recipe if you google it. SOOOOOO good. My family fights over this stuff!
