I buy only natural peanut butter now and it says to refridgerate it. When I bought the other stuff (Jif, etc) it was in the pantry. My husband likes real maple syrup and keeps it in the fridge. I only like the fake stuff and keep that in the pantry.
That's us too - natural PB in fridge, unnatural on shelf. Real maple syrup in fridge (only kind we get now)

I found this under the FAQ section of the Smucker's site:

Q. Do I have to refrigerate Smucker's peanut butter?

A. The food items we produce are classified as non-perishable. Refrigeration is not necessary, although it does slow down the oil-separation process.

Q. Should I refrigerate your preserves, jellies, toppings, etc.?

A. The food items we produce are classified as non-perishable. Refrigeration is not necessary but recommended. Under normal conditions, unopened products should remain safe to eat indefinitely. However, over time the flavor and color of products will decline. Our products have a "best when purchased by" date on the back label.

Here is information about storing butter:

"We recommend that butter be refrigerated at 32º - 38ºF. Bring out only enough butter that you plan to use for each meal. After use, any remaining butter should be returned to the refrigerator immediately, making sure it is covered or re-wrapped, to insure freshness and flavor. Butter is very susceptible to picking up foreign odors and flavors and should always be stored away from highly aromatic food products. Heat and light speed undesirable chemical and physical changes in butter. If it is not refrigerated, or left out for prolonged periods, this could cause flavor changes, rancidity and mold growth."

"Store butter in the refrigerator for best quality. Butter should be stored in its’ original carton or a covered container. The butter keeper in the door of the refrigerator is NOT the best place to keep the butter as it is sometimes warmer than the rest of the refrigerator"

I had to laugh when I saw this thread. When DH and I first got married 25 yrs ago, I remember looking for the peanut butter one day in the cupboard. Couldn't find it. Asked DH about it, he said, its right here in the refrigerator, where it belongs. What??? I had never heard of that, thought he was a little nuts. LOL I told him the right way was to keep it in the cupboard. It's in the pantry today.

(We do go through it quickly though, I have 4 kids, and PB& J sandwiches are about all they'll take for lunches at school)

I keep peanut butter and syrup in the pantry, DH puts them in the fridge. Most of the time they are in the pantry.

Parmesan cheese says keep in a cool dry place. I keep mine in the pantry, the fridge may be cool but not dry.

We keep ours in the pantry. I've accidentally put it in the fridge before and then when I went to use it, it was hard as a rock.
