I just paid through paypal, to enter my dd's into a dance competition. 5 minutes later, I got a phone call from Paypal. :confused3 They were making sure I had authorized that payment.

Anyone ever heard of this before?

Beth

I don't know what to tell you, but I dropped Paypal like a hot potato when I had $2000 unauthorized payments. It was all cleared up but made me very nervous after that. No more. Hopefully someone here ca help you. You can always call them and you can get their number from their website. They helped me alot.

UPDATE: registered my kids into another competition (payment to a different paypal address, because it's a different competition)...got another phone call from a different phone rep at paypal.

Interesting.

Maybe they're calling because you've onlly used Paypal through e-bay, so this would be an unusual transaction for you?

Nope ... I don't use it too often at all...for feis entries once every few months, and for ebay once or twice a year. Who knows. I just never even heard that they might call people!!

Not sure, but at least they're checking on things that may be unusual. Since you rarely use it, maybe they just want to make sure it's you. Fine by me if they did that! Too many scams and thiefs out there these days!

I totally agree!! After the second phone call, they asked if I'd be paypal-ing any more Feis payments today...if so, they would notate it so that I didn't keep getting called today.

Sounds like paypal wanted to make sure it wasn't a scam. Sounds like a good idea on a scammer's part, pay and we will enter your child, thus no goods switching hands yet someone making money. Those seem to be the biggest scams lately.

Glad paypal called, hope it didn't interupt ya! Seems like they were just trying to protect!

hmm..at least you got 2 calls, so that's a good thing, but i agree with the poster that said you should call them to make sure :)

But I can tell you I bought something off of 'Craigs List' using Paypal. The item never came...and though I paid $250+ I received only $13 compensation as that was all they could obtain from this persons account!

Not much incentive to buy with Paypal if you ask me!

Exactly why I use paypal very little. I could see how a payment to a feis (competition) could seem like one of those kid-contest scams, now that a pp brought that up. Of course, I know a legitimate feis because we get the list from our dance school, and also from the governing commission.

The second phone call, I asked why I was getting calls for this (never got them before). He just tried to explain that they have certain parameters, that might flag transactions.

OH!OH!OH! I really bet one of the parameters is payments to a paypal account that was just set up (along with other parameters, I am sure)...when a feis is organized, if paypal will be a form of payment, an account is set up to handle those payments...then a couple of months later, I bet that account is inactivated, at least till the same feis the following year takes registration again.

Anyway, I am rambling but I truly am glad that in the end, paypal has some sort of flagging system and that they call to check up!!
