Paying Excess Baggage Fees

I think this is a simple question - when using Magical Express to go back to the airport, do you pay any excess or overweight baggage fees when you check-in for the flight back at the WDW resort? Thanks.

Going back to MCO, the Magical Express part is just the bus ride. Baggage and passenger check in is done by Resort Airline Check in, which is a separate service. You don't need to be riding the DME bus to take advantage of the RAC service.

That technical point out of the way, if you are using RAC to check your luggage you will need to call BAGS, the company that provides this service under contract to Disney, and pay any required baggage charges before you check in at the RAC desk. The RAC desks are not equipped to deal with the baggage charges. You will receive a package of information in your room the day before your departure that will explain the procedure.

Yep! They weighed our luggage at the Contemporary and told us to reallocate some weight from the over weight ones to the underweight ones (which weren't that underweight) or pay the fees.

We reallocated the weight, but I don't know if they would have charged us or American would have charged us when we got to the airport.

We have used RAC about 20+ times now and love this service. When you check into your room there will be a flyer. It will tell you all you need to do if using luggage assistance when you depart. It will have a list of participating airlines and what the procedure is for the airline you are using. You have to call 24 hours before departing and you need to pay your luggage fees via a credit card over the phone. Currently United is not charging the return luggage fee, but that can change at anytime. Once you pay, you'll get a confirmation number. When you check your luggage the next day it should show on your account that your fees have been paid. IF you do not pay your fees prior to checking your luggage you WILL NOT be able to use the luggage assistance/RAC service. They WILL weigh you luggage at the luggage assistance area. They will give you the opportunity to rearrange your weight if overweight. If you cannot get within the guidelines you WILL NOT be able to use luggage assistance and will have to go to the counter at the airport and pay your overage fees there and check your luggage there. We have witnessed this by other travelers in lines many (many) times. Everytime we have used luggage assistance (RAC) there has always been ONE person who has not been able to use this perk. Either they have not paid there luggage fees prior, their luggage is overweight, they have not allowed the 3 hours prior to their departure, or for some reason the BAGs rep can not access their account. We have used this service at AK/BW/BC/WL/CSR and absolutely love this service!! BTW -- don't forget, BAGs is not Disney and these folks will expect to be tipped the same as tipping for curb side service at the airport.

Can I use BAGS and RAC if I am not using Magical Express? I might decide to get a rental car and do some things outside of WDW, in particular my DDs may want to visit the Florida Mall before heading to the airport. If I have my boarding passes and the bags are checked at the resort, then we can head straight to the security line.
