Paying cash vs. renting points?

I'm so tired from trying to figure out the best way to go, I can no longer think. So...I come to you more experienced DVCers. I'm planning on booking BWV (my home resort) for our trip next Aug ('07), followed by a 4 night cruise. I have the points to stay until Friday if I arrive on Sunday night, which would have me leave for the hotel at Cocoa Beach on Friday morning. However I was hoping to leave on Sat morning....hence the question. Would I be better off trying to get someone to transfer the needed points to me, or would I be better off just paying the discounted cash price for that Friday night's stay? Does anyone know what the discout would amount to...ballpark figure? Thanks so much.

I had just run calculations like this for my own trip. It will depend on the size unit you are looking for.

Based on $10 pp (or even 11 for that matter), in a Studio, it worked out about even. For a 2br it was cheaper to go on cash (with or without the discount) rather than get points transferred. I didn't calculate a 1br.

These were standard BWV rooms.

Also, remember that you can't book a BW view room with cash. So if you were planning on that view, then renting points may make more sense.

we like to use the AP discounts for Friday and Saturday. Enjoy staying at the other Disney resorts.

i've seen a few ppl say this.......
but when i wanted to add a BW view night to our stay in aug, i was told it was available with points OR with DVC cash discount.
(i know CRO does not have access to BW view)

Wow! This is interesting.

It may be that we all thought it was not available becuase it was always sold out. It may be that there is no official policy to not sell BW view for cash. I was surprised one time we I was offered a Standard view for cash with a DVC discount in October, becuase I thought these would always be sold out with points.

Paying cash for DVC rooms still remains one of the great mysteries to me, with little written documentation. If it were not for people reporting the feedback they receive on the DIS, I would be totally lost.

As to CRO not having access to BW view, I thought all the rooms were sold as run-of-the-house, that is, no view guranteed. Thus, you could get BW view, but it is not likely due to guaranteed view reservations made by MS with points (and maybe cash).
