Pay Costco with Disney Gift Card

I am planning to pay for the remaining balance of the DCL cruise with Target Disney Gift Cards to take advantage of the 5% savings. Costco Travel confirmed it is not a problem. Aside from the monies getting returned to the original gift card IF something happens, is there any other reason not to use gift cards? I can't use my AMEX but other credit cards have some sort of benefit but I can't think of a valid scenario where it would really help given all of the exclusions.

I would combine the gift cards and just have $1000 gift cards. Costco has to call DCL and give them the card numbers - after you provide them to Costco travel.

I don’t pay with gift cards for the inconvenience factor and the risk of cancelling and having thousands on gift cards.

I pay with the Costco city card which gives 3% back on travel.

I agree with @cvjw - It a bit of a pain to call Costco and then wait for them to call Disney.

Make sure to keep all gift cards, if you need to cancel the money will be refunded to them.

They didn’t need to call Disney when I called them a couple of months ago. I used 2 gift cards that had $1000 each on them.

I think it’s worth the inconvenience to save 10% off Disney vacations. Pay for cruises, park tickets, DVC dues….anything I can with gift cards.

$9 for DCL, $4K for annual pass, $3-6K for 2-3X visits next year + 5% = $$$ for me. If I have to cancel, I will use that monies at Disney in the near future. Is there any other benefit where the card will help me? It's not like I can call Amex (or Visa) and get some sort of travel insurance? If you don't go to Disney much, I can see fear that you might have thousands in unused cards after it is paid back to original source.

I don't know for sure about this but its something ive wondered about. Some credit cards provide travel insurance. However you must use your credit card to pay for your trip. So I assume if you use gift cards to pay that may disqualify you from benefiting from the travel insurance the credit card offers. Again idk for sure but you asked about possible disadvantages in paying by gift cards.

Not all CC have a travel insurance. You could look at buying independent insurance too for your trip, comparing what's covered. One of my CCs just covers bags, but nothing on flight delays etc, for example.
I buy the GC because I figure even if my cruise is canceled I for sure will book another one. Disney $ will get spent one way or another in my house.

But if you have to cancel inside the window, Disney keeps your money, you don't get it reimbursed because of no insurance AND you don't cruise.

You're assuming the person paying for the cruise has insurance on their CC that would cover the cancelation after PIF. Like I said, you have to know what your CC covers or doesn't cover and consider buying independent travel insurance either way.
