Pat Robertson comments....AGAIN!

I have to agree that PR has gone off the deep end, especially with the Israel thing. I'm what people would call a conservative "evangelical" Christian, and though I used to watch PR I just can't anymore. I strongly disagree with many of his opinions on world events/policies. He portrays his personal political opinions as Gospel (literally) and I believe that is wrong, and even dangerous.

::yes::

ITA.

He has gone off the deep end and IMHO hurts the image of conservative Christianity. I TRULY hope no one thinks he speaks for all of us!!!

The way the poster worded this seem to suggest that if there was a way to do it, the poster would silence Pat Robertson.

Hey, if you don't like what he says, or you fear what he might say in the future, well just don't listen to him or read what others say about him, that way you reduce the risk you will be offended.

Maybe because he stepping real close to being soemthing somebody could prove is doing harm. People like that have been silenced (taken off the air) before (not how like how Pat said to silence somebody).

Once again, it's hard seeing nothing but silence from the conservative Christian groups each time and not have those thoughts come up.

Robertson Links Sharon Stroke, God's Wrath

By SONJA BARISIC
Associated Press Writer

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine punishment for "dividing God's land."

"God considers this land to be his," Robertson said on his TV program "The 700 Club." "You read the Bible and he says `This is my land,' and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, `No, this is mine.'"

Sharon, who ordered Israel's withdrawal from Gaza last year, suffered a severe stroke on Wednesday.

In Robertson's broadcast from his Christian Broadcasting Network in Virginia Beach, the evangelist said he had personally prayed about a year ago with Sharon, whom he called "a very tender-hearted man and a good friend." He said he was sad to see Sharon in this condition.

He also said, however, that in the Bible, the prophet Joel "makes it very clear that God has enmity against those who 'divide my land.'"

Sharon "was dividing God's land and I would say woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the EU (European Union), the United Nations, or the United States of America," Robertson said.

In discussing what he said was God's insistence that Israel not be divided, Robertson also referred to the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who had sought to achieve peace by giving land to the Palestinians. "It was a terrible thing that happened, but nevertheless he was dead," he said.

The Anti-Defamation League issued a statement urging Christian leaders to distance themselves from the remarks. Robertson made similar comments as the Gaza withdrawal occurred, it said.

"It is outrageous and shocking, but not surprising, that Pat Robertson once again has suggested that God will punish Israel's leaders for any decision to give up land to the Palestinians," said Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the group, which fights anti-Semitism. "His remarks are un-Christian and a perversion of religion. Unlike Robertson, we don't see God as cruel and vengeful."

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said a religious leader "should not be making callous political points while a man is struggling for his life."

"Pat Robertson has a political agenda for the entire world, and he seems to think God is ready to take out any world leader who stands in the way of that agenda," Lynn said in a statement.

Robertson spokeswoman Angell Watts said of critics who challenged his remarks, "What they're basically saying is, `How dare Pat Robertson quote the Bible?'"

"This is what the word of God says," Watts said. "This is nothing new to the Christian community."

In August, Robertson suggested on "The 700 Club" that American agents should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has long been at odds with U.S. foreign policy. Robertson later apologized for his remarks, saying he "spoke in frustration."

Some might say that Pat Robertson is a terrorist that the United States is harboring.

Who would that be? Members of DU?

Pat Robertson is offensive on so many levels. Hopefully he is just mentally ill, because I cannot believe a real Christian would say the things he does. :confused3

You know, I prefer to look at this another way. I would have said, "Fortunately, .....Pat Roberston....."

Why you ask, well we may not agree with anything Pat Robertson says but he not only has the right to call things the way he sees them, he served in the Marine Corps to ensure that we all will continue to have the right to speak our mind.

The way the poster worded this seem to suggest that if there was a way to do it, the poster would silence Pat Robertson.

As the poster you quoted, I will respond. I wholeheartedly support the 1st Amendment rights of every U.S. citizen, including those with whom I may vehemently disagree.

There are some limited instances, however, where were it legal to do so I would support a "gag rule" for certain individuals or groups, whose speech is so hateful and/or offensive as to be injurious to very large segments of the population. However, I realize this is neither legal nor wise, so my support for sewing PR's mouth closed was offered tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek.

I believe that it is critical that individuals or groups who spout hateful or offensive messages be closely monitored, so that people can respond to them and the message. That's why I earlier encouraged people who were offended by this comment to send feedback to PR via his web site. He and his organization need to know how offensive his comments were. To ignore such speech is to give it credibility by default and that is something I refuse to do.

I may not be able to get PR to shut up, but I can make my voice heard -- an exercise my right of free speech -- to respond to his offensive messages.

History is full of prominant people like Robertson or Falwell that distorted religion for their own purposes. Robertson isn't the first or the last. But he is stark raving nuts, isn't he?!?

I have to believe Pat will get his own divine retribution in the end. maybe a bolt of lightning?

And it took him ONLY six days to write that. What a guy.

Doesn't look like he's admitting his comments were incorrect, just bad timing. Basically, I'm sorry I pointed out your dad was punished by God so soon after his stroke, I should have waited a few weeks.

Pat Robertson is as good for Christianity as Hitler was for Germany. He's a total crackpot who's gone off his rocker. He preaches hatred, and he in an ill informed bigot and racist. He's nothing more than just another megalomaniac with a following to match.

What comes around goes around though. He'll get his soon enough--hopefully sooner than later.

Well, I suppose the revelation that he should semi-apologize takes a little longer to dawn on old Pat than the revelation that someone having a stroke is being punished by God. :confused3

Unless I missed something, I believe that Ariel Sharon is still alive.

DH said he heard, last week, that Pat Robertson sold his show years ago to ABC and he put an iron-clad phrasing in the contract that Pat Robertson is the only one who can cancel his show. Disney has been searching for a loop hole in that contract ever since they bought ABC to no avail!! If that is true, it would explain why he makes such terrible comments....well, among other reasons! Anyone else heard this??
