Thats not true, generally as long as theyre valid for your trip youre fine.
I think 1 or 2 airlines suggest you have at least 6 months but thats the maximum ive heard. who are you flying with?
It only has to be valid for the length of your stay although some airlines insist on 6 month validity. I've not heard of anyone being asked for 12 months validity before.
If you are travelling under the Visa Waiver program the US C & BP only require your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. Link here
Both Virgin and BA stick to this requirement.
If flying with another airline they could insist on 6 months even though it is not a US immigration requirement.
6 months is the maximum, someone is wrong telling you 12 months.
