Passport renewal

The instructions state to send in your old passport with the renewal application. Does it get sent back? CAll me sentimental, but I like seeing all my stamps.
The renewal didnt look to be any cheaper, so what is the benefit of renewing, especially if they take the old one back?

Yes, they punch holes in the front so its obvious that it isn't valid !

Applying for a new one would require you to apply in person (passport office and certain post offices) - renewal can be done by mail. Also, a new application requires more documentation hassle, and I think you'd have to lie and say the old passport is lost if you want to avoid turning it in. As long as you don't mind the cover being punched, renewal is a lot easier!

wow, this order is confusing! Thanks for the help. Now more questions.. can I still reapply in person as DH has to go down anyway? or is it faster by mail?

To renew, you do it by mail. It's cheaper because they don't include the processing fee.

Yes they send your old stuff back.

No you can't renew in person. I went in with DH to get DS's first passport, and mailed it from the PO along with getting DS's stuff altogether.


FYI, it's in the FAQs on the state dept's passport site.

Yes, we return the old, cancelled passport to you although it may be sent separately from your new passport. It is a good idea to keep it in a safe place as it is considered proof of your U.S. citizenship.

I made sure to include this so you know they will arrive in separate envelopes. (they say "may", but I haven't experienced them arriving in the same one yet)
