I wasn't quite sure where to post this so mods feel free to move if needed. My passport expired last April and I have also gotten married and changed my last name since then. What do I need to do to get a valid one? I was 15 when I got my first so am unsure where to start. Thank you!

You can go on the internet and get the information needed to get a revised passport.US GOV sites. You can download the paperwork and mail away your old passport along with the required forms completed. I would think that change of name would require a marriage form to be included. They will list where in your area you can go for help by an authorized government agent. For us we use the local town clerk that collects all our paperwork, notorizes (sp?) what we need and sends it off. It costs around $100. or so. It usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks but we got ours back in less time. You get your old passport back along with the new one. That is one arm of the government that works quite well IMO. I'm sure someone else will offer more specific details for it has been a few years since we renewed ours.:)

You can go to a post office (that processes passports) ask for a form DS-11,
This is for a new passport.
You cannot do a renewal as you were under the age of 16 for your last passport.
You will need a government photo ID, a 2x2 photo, certified long form birth certificate, marriage certificate...All originals. Also, a check made out to the Department of State for 110.00 for a routine 28 page passport book.
It cost more to expedite. Also, the post office charges a SEPERATE 25.00 fee, this cannot be added to the check being sent to the Department of State.
The form DS 11 has to be written out in black ink or typed in black ink.

Hope this helps.

Wishesluv, if you happen to live in a college town, you might want to see if there is a passport office at the college. They are used to helping people who are doing the passport thing for the first time on their own and are usually super nice and helpful. Our local branch of the state U does the photos, helps with the forms, provides the mailing pouch, and then points to the mail clerk across the lobby who will help.with postage. Hand holding at its finest!

That's a really wonderful suggestion! I never knew that. Good to know!
