hi guys! can you help clear something up for me? i was listening to the radio this am and they said that if youre travelling to the states your kids can go on your passports meaning they didnt need one. is this true? im scannning the passport site rite now and all i can locate is the fact they do need one or a nexus card.

im so confused! and i dont want to get to the airport and not have it and have to put the trip on hold. oy!

Here is a quote from passport canada site:

"Canadians travelling to the United States
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) is a US law that requires all travellers, including US and Canadian citizens, to present a valid passport or other approved secure document when entering the United States.

By land or water
If you wish to enter the United States at its land or water crossings, you must present one of the following:

A valid passport;
A NEXUS card;
A Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card; or
An enhanced driver's licence/enhanced identification card.
At land and water crossings, Canadian citizens 15 years of age or under require only proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or a Canadian citizenship card. Canadian citizens 18 years of age or under who are travelling with a school or other organized group under adult supervision and with parental/guardian consent also require only proof of Canadian citizenship.

By air
If you are flying to, through or from the United States, you must present one of the following:

A valid passport; or
A valid NEXUS card when used at a NEXUS kiosk at participating Canadian airports or at any U.S. airport.
The air travel requirements apply to all Canadian citizens, regardless of age, including children."

I heard that they are going to be somewhat lenient for a while at the ground ports. However, when flying into the US, each person, regardless of age, needs their own passport.

"I heard" rumours are not the best way to get your travel information.

Also, as quoted from the Canadian passport government site, although your children do not require a passport crossing the border by ground, you will need one for them if you then travel by plane throughout the States.

Amber -

My DH is planning to take our kids applications down to the office on Barrington St tomorrow. I'll let you know what the wait time is like.

When I went to New Orleans two years ago (and brought you back some pink beads ;) ), I had mine expedited for an extra $10 and got it back in ten days - and that was at the peak of the passport delay/lineup crazyness, so you should have lots of time.

hehe i still have them on my vanity!!! dh had his expedited in feburay when he went off to virginia to train.

thanks for your help guys- i found the above on the site as well, then heard
c100 this am and they mentioned getting the kids on your own. perhaps they meant by land instead of air.

Air Travel to the US means PASSPORT or NEXUS - and they really mean it!

We booked our January 2009 vacation just after Pierce was born in October 2008; and let me say it was a fiasco. Nothing like rushing birth certificates and trying to get a 3 week old to keep his eyes open. They absolutely have not permitted children on adult passports in a long while... and there is no intention of going back to the old "method" as I was advised by the processing office in Gatineau.

Passport Canada guidelines are the only ones to follow :goodvibes

Any child under the age of 16 will be allowed to pass customs without a passport, but they will need to have proof of citizenship. This is also only when driving, they need a passport if flying.

I seem to recall that you used to be able to have children listed on your passport, and maybe some of those are still out there not yet expired. (I think I had ds on my passport when we went to Mexico in 2008.) We got our kids their own passports last year even though we were driving over the border. It's just easier, though I hate the new fees. Also, it's kind of funny to take your kid for a passport photo and watch the photog try to get them NOT to smile. (After us moms yelling at them their entire lives "SMILE! SMILE FOR THE CAMERA!")

This was reported on the news but you must be able to prove citizenship or you will be denied entry.

Does anyone know the least expensive method to re-new a childs passport (both under 16). The kids passports expire this fall and I looked on passport canadas website and can't find a childs renewal e-form.

Does this mean I have to fill out brand new applications for them?

Thank you

i think you do. with the system set as it is- i think kids are only good for what 2 yrs? being due part in fact that they change their looks so fast. altho i could be totally off base here.

thanks for all your help guys, cant just be cut and dry can it? i mean if were going to have to have one for flying why not make it manditory for everything? instead of saying yes you need a passport to fly but proof of citizenship will do for driving.

You have to fill out a new from for children. Children's passports can't be renewed just adults.

Will I need to order the "long" form birth certificate to apply for my kids' passports? The short form doesn't list the names of parents.

C100 is wrong on this part. As other posters have mentioned you have not been able to add a child's name to a parents passport for many years. I think they are confusing the issue with children under 16 not requiring a passport when crossing at a land border (proof of citizenship will suffice). However, when traveling via air, all travellers must have a passport to enter the USA.
