Passholder Rate Question

I was wondering if any of you might know the answer to this... we are AP holders. I currently have a room booked w/an AP discount at POFQ for 5 nights in late July. However, we really want WL. When I plug in our exact dates, only courtyard view, bunk bed comes up with the AP rate and it is a tad steep at $219/night plus tax. However, if I extend our dates by pushing back the check in date, courtyard view comes up at $189/night. I am still holding out hopes of getting a woods or standard view room, but my question is, why does a longer stay (which includes our 5 nights) bring up courtyard view, but when I put in our exact dates, it is not available?

I am wondering what I will do if a cheaper category comes up for a longer stay, but not for our exact dates. Has anyone booked a longer stay on purpose to get a discounted rate, then called back to drop nights so as to get the exact nights they really wanted? Were you able to keep the discount? Thanks for any insight you may have.

Disney and many other hotel chains have length of stay rooms. Meaning they look at the whole entire resort and whos staying how many nights and say "ok we have room X available but we need someone to stay X nights or its going to be empty for one night". Does it make sense? No. Is there a reason behind it? Probably. But we'll never understand it. Wouldnt they rather have it full for 5 nights instead of none?

I haven't personally done it but I know others have booked the longer stay and then called to cancel the nights they didn't want and were able to keep the discounted rate for the nights they needed.
