Pasport's for young children

I have an email into DCL about this but I haven't heard anything back yet. We are in the same situation as most. Going on the Magic in October so we will need to get both kids a passport. When I get a response, I will post it.

I just received an email from Disney Cruise Guest Mail -

"All U.S. and Canadian citizens must travel with proof of citizenship, which is a valid Passport or a Birth Certificate (an original one with a raised seal from your state of birth) along with a picture identification, or a Certified Naturalization Certificate along with a picture identification.
Acceptable forms of picture identification are a state or provincial driver's license with a
picture, or a federal, state, province, or local government photo I.D. card. Travel documents
required throughout the vacation are the responsibility of the guest. We ask that guests consult
with their travel agent, government agencies, embassy, or consulate to determine documentary
requirements. Guests under 18 will be permitted to board with just their Birth Certificate if
travelling with a parent or legal guardian."

We look forward to the chance to sail with you.

Sincerely,

Tracey, Guest Communications
Disney Cruise Line

This appears to be the basic requirement that has been in place since the beginning.
Maybe the formal change has not gone through yet.

Both of my Kids, DS7 and DD11 have passports and have since our DCL in Oct. 2002. We just thought it was easier than carrying around paper BC.

Now i Just have to rmember to have their renewed before they expire......

All of three of my children (DD11, DD9, DS5) have passports. In fact, they are each onto their second one (first ones expired). My 5 1/2 year old son just got his replaced. His first one was a two month old infant photo. At least now he actually resembles his passport.

We applied for the passports in late January and received them in February. It took about four weeks. Yes, you need to have both parents present. Makes it much easier!

I just feel more secure having a passport while traveling out of the country.

I am very glad that this seems to be settled. I am sailing 6/13 2004 and had NOT planned on getting passports for my children. I would hate to be rushing at the last minute.

SamR I thnk that we are sailing at the same time. I sent you an email.:smooth:

I read on another cruise related board that St. Marten is going to begin requiring passports before the end of this year. Not sure how valid it is, but it wouldn't suprise me if most of the Caribbean begins to require passports within the next year or two.

I would recommend a passport. If you travel by air it's just a whole lot easier, even if it's just a domestic flight.

tvguy,
I'm just curious... how is it easier? I have always just showed my driver's licence. Can't get much easier than that, I don't think. Am I missing something?

We took my DD (age 7) to get her first passport a couple months ago (our cruise is 4/29). My husband and I already have valid passports. It took about 1 month to get it back. We had to provide her original birth certificate, which they sent back with the passport. All 3 of us had to appear at the passport office. I plan to make copies of the 1st page of all of our passports before we leave - one set to leave with someone at home, the other set to keep with us. I do not plan to carry any of our birth certificates with us. I figure we're in more trouble if we lose the birth certificates than we are if we lose the passports because the passports originate from the birth certificates to begin with.

BWV Denise - I recommend a passport, in the world we live in today, say your ship or plane ends up in Haiti or Cuba, a passport is your best proof of citizenship. Immigrations on the ship, passport is the quickest form of ID, even flying domestic, we always use the passports, hand the agent all four and your set. No fumbling for the license, getting it stuck in your wallet. Then go to the rental car area, and you can't find it because you were in a hurry and stuffed it back elsewhere. I will always preach, if you are leaving the country, even to Canada, get a passport. Another problem, and I have seen this happen, worse case scenerio, say your robbed while touring an island, or you just plane loose your Birth Certificate, how do you prove your an American Citizen and get back through immigrations, with a passport, you can contact the consulate, and they have the information, expecially easy if you had made copies.
