Partial Points Sale???

A friend has a SIL who's rather bad with money and bought something like 800 pts at BWV a number of years ago. Now money is getting tight for this person and she's supposedly wanting to sell her 800 pts.

Is it possible to 'split' the 800?

Also, we have add-ons at WL. Can we just sell the add-ons and not our primary purchase at VB? (Not that we want to...just curious)

Thanks,
Joe

I know you can sell add-on contracts separately from your initial contract if you so desire.

I don't know the answer about "splitting" one contract however. If I had to guess, I'd say you couldn't. But I don't really know. I'll bump this up and maybe someone who does know will post.

Interesting question. There certainly would be much more of a resale market for two 400 point contracts rather than an 800 point "elephant". My understanding has been that contracts CANNOT be divided when resold. However, you could get a definitive answer by calling the Timeshare Store which is the sponsor listed at the top of the page.

Good Luck,

If 800 points were part of a single contract purchase then they must be sold as a whole. The legality is this:

When you purchase under one contract, the legal transaction is not a purchase of points. Points just represent your ownership interest. What you do buy is a specific percentage real estate interest in a specific unit at the resort. That real estate interest cannot thereafter be divided into any two or more separate interests. As a result, it can only be sold as a whole.

If you have separate contracts, like an original purchase and then an add-on, you can sell those separately as each is its own specific real estate interest. (If you have an add on just compare that contract with your original contract and you will see that the add on is for a real estate interest in a different unit than the one from your original contract.)

This is what I figured, but thought someone would know without me having to pour through the two pounds of legaleze filed away somewhere or sit on hold waiting for MS. :)

I didn't think to call a reseller, which is surpising to me since we were talking about this over the weekend, and if we had to do it all over again, we'd not buy from Disney but look at a resale.

Adding to this train of thought, unless someone has relatively equivilant point allocations through add-ons, bequeathing membership through a will to multiple beneficiaries would be more difficult. Not that we're concerned about this...our four legged children aren't allowed to visit, let alone own DVC. Just an observation from someone who has seen (from a distance) really nasty sibling fights over a will. :(

Thanks for the input,
Joe

If you have a September use year, I would be interested in your VWL add-on. Our use year was sold out by the time we decided to buy additional points!

This is the reason that many of us suggest dividing your points purchases for larger points packages. Four 200 point packages would have been a much better investment than a single 800 points contract for many reasons.

I know this because it just came up with a resale I bought. I purchased a 170 point and an 80 point BWV resale. My broker told me that if I ever wanted to sell, then I could sell each individually (an advantage) as opposed from a 250 point contract I was thinking of buying which would have to go as a unit.

I just bought a Sept use year add on at VWL, just this past week....who said they were all sold out?

Depending on what your friend paid per point originally it might be worth the effort to sell the 800pts. then buy a smaller pkg.

Its actually a SIL of a friend, who (this SIL, not my friend) apparantly has no concept of the value of money. She bought all 800 pts in one swell foop (for cash) and is apparantly complaining about the annual fees now that the pot of gold is running low.

For her sake, hopefully some wealthy shiek needs to do an 'add-on' to house some more servants for a month. :)

PT,

My guide told me that the September use year was sold out a couple of weeks ago. She put me on a waiting list. I called her as soon as I read your e-mail to see if any points had materialized and she said there was still no September use year at WLV.

Can you describe use year and what months are available. I have heard septmber and february so far. Are there better months than others? how is one assigned to you and do you have a say in choosing?

Thanks

I know a couple of WL use years were already sold out but I expect all BCV years are technically available. Basically if you want a use year, I'm sure you can get it, just ask. Worst case scenario is you'll have to wait a couple of months.

As for what's better, it depends. I think there are 2 factors with BCV. One is that the earlier you get your week, the earlier you get your points. The other is that you generally want a use year around 6 months or less before you normally will visit WDW. So if you visit Spring, Summer or early Fall; Feb should work out well. If you normally visit Winter, Xmas, etc and will continue to do so, I'd likely consider August, Sept or even later.

I think the use year is far more important for some than for others so you must decide what the likelihood of wanting high demand times is for you as well as the risk of needed to cancel at less than 6 months before your use year. Also a good time to remind you to buy where you want to stay most of the time.
