We just returned yesterday (January 30th) from a nine night trip to WDW. I have been a big fan of the dining reviews, so I wanted to "pay back" the community by writing up a review of our meals from our trip last week.

The diners included:

Me: 31/32 (birthday girl on this trip) vegetarian
DH: 35 omnivore, but not a huge meat eater
DD: 18 month old vegetarian who has a severe egg allergy

We were on the dining plan (for free) last fall and loved it enough to pay for it on this trip. DH and I either didn't eat breakfast or ate a granola bar that we brought from home. We usually ate lunch early (around 11am) and didn't eat again until dinner between 5pm and 6pm. Most of our snack credits were used for drinks.

Saturday, January 21st

Wolfgang Puck Café

DH: Calamari, Grouper Special, Carrot Cake

ME: Spinach and Five Cheese Dip, Three Cheese Ravioli, Carrot Cake

DH liked the Calamari, but barely ate half…huge portion! The spinach dip was not good at all. His fish was okay, but he liked the sides that came with it. We both really liked the ravioli. It had lots of sauce and garlic! We were so stuffed at dessert that we split one of the slices of carrot cake and took the other one to go.

Columbia Harbour House

DH: Half Sandwich (Anchors Aweigh) and Cup of Soup (Clam Chowder), Apple Pie
Me: Lighthouse Sandwich, Triple Chocolate Cake

We love Columbia Harbour House! It's probably our favorite CS restaurant at WDW. We always eat upstairs and watch the people walk by. DH liked the soup a lot. His sandwich was pretty good as well…good bread. I love the Lighthouse Sandwich! Very tasty. We actually split the desserts and both were definitely above average.

Spoodles

DH: Mediterranean Dips, Oak-fired New York Strip with Shrimp add on, Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee
Me: Four Cheese Flatbread, "Vegetarian Tour", Ice Cream Sundae

This meal ended up being a stressful evening for us because our DD, who has a severe egg allergy, ended up having an allergic reaction during our meal. (As a sidenote, we did speak to a chef at every meal about her allergy. We don't believe that it was egg that she was reacting to. It was more likely a cheese on the four cheese flatbread). We split the appetizers. All three of us didn't care for the Four Cheese Flatbread, but the dips were great! DH ordered his steak medium, but it came out medium rare and because of the "allergy incident" he didn't bother to have it taken back. He did enjoy the shrimp. My "Vegetarian Tour" was a plateful of side dishes. It was okay, but I was distracted and couldn't enjoy my meal at all. Luckily, my DD's face was clearing up by dessert. DH liked his crème brulee, but hasn't had enough crème brulee to say whether it was great or not. I loved my sundae. It was two plain scoops of chocolate ice cream with 6 or so topping cups to make your own sundae. Fun!

Pizza Planet

DH: Woody's Meal Deal, Mickey Rice Krispy Treat
Me: Buzz's Meal Deal, Rice Krispy Treat

Pizza was decent. Salad was pretty blah. I thought that there dessert choices were poor. The weather was nice so we ate on the patio outside.

Garden Grill

DH had the standard food served here and I had the mushroom ravioli. DH really liked the catfish and had a second helping. My ravioli was fine. We had such a great time at this meal!!! Our server was wonderful and gave us bottles of Evian to take with us since we were on the dining plan in addition to our Diet Cokes. The chef also brought out a special meal (egg free pasta with sauce) and dessert (Itzkadoozie) for our DD (who was free since she was under 3). She also brought out a special Ariel bib for her that, of course, she refused to wear. The characters came around probably half a dozen times and spent a ton of time with our DD. We had such a good time at this meal that I was giddy when we left!

Crystal Palace Lunch

The interior of this restaurant was much more impressive than I imagined. We had an 11:30am reservation and were seated shortly after they opened. I had high hopes for my DD at this meal since she had such a great time at dinner the night before and also because she is a huge Winnie the Pooh fan, but she was much more standoffish. We found out why when we got back to our room that night…she had almost a 102 fever. Anyhow, a chef once again brought out some special egg free food for our DD. I think that they brought out some egg free rolls and Rice Dream for her. DH and I were both impressed with the food since we are normally not much of buffet people. DH loved the curry dishes. I thought that the cold salads were great. Desserts were good, but nothing special. The characters only made there way around once and only spent a few seconds with us.

Kona Café

DH: Sticky Wings, Macadamia Mahi Mahi, Chocolate Macadamia Nut Tart
Me: Kid's Grilled Cheese, Pan Asian Pasta, Kilauea Torte

We were still stuffed from lunch, but thought that Kona Café was wonderful! DH's appetizer was good, but he really enjoyed his mahi mahi. Our server was great and was nice enough to let me order a kids meal for my DD in place of an appetizer. My pasta was excellent. Lots of vegetables. I had seen the pictures of the Kilauea Torte and wanted to try that. It was okay…kind of dry. DH and I both loved the Chocolate Macadamia Nut Tart. It had a very thick and delicious layer of carmel in it and was served with a coconut ice cream. As I mentioned, we later found out that DD was not feeling very good and our normally well behaved in restaurants daughter was a screaming monster. One of the hostess', Tammy, was so nice and kept coming over to entertain her while we ate.

Okay...I have to get the baby to sleep, but I'll write more tomorrow. Reviews to come: Coral Reef, Le Cellier, CRT Dinner, Boma, PSB Dinner....

:cheer2:
Thank you for posting! DH is an omnivore, too, so your reviews are very helpful!

Thanks for posting, I'm enjoying the reviews and can't wait to read the rest  A little OT :offtopic: (And I hope this isn't a dumb question) but what is an omnivore?

Thanks,
Terri

Sounds fantastic ~ Thanx for sharing.

An omnivore eats foods from both plant and animal sources...including meat.

Thanks for the reviews, I like your way of grading on food, atmosphere and service!

Omnivore=meat :teeth: An omnivore is a meat eater.

I love the reviews!!!
A carnivore is a meat-eater. Omnivores eat everything.

omni = "all"
omnipotent = "all-powerful"
omnivore = "eats everything"

Thanks for the reviews amarberry!
We need to get back to Crystal Palace!

Thanks for the reviews. I'm a vegetarian in a family of omnivores, so I especially enjoyed hearing about your dining experiences. :)

Thanks for the positive feedback. I hope to have the rest of the reviews up tonight.

While DH does eat meat, he is far from a carnivore, hence why I choice to call him an omnivore. Luckily for me, he could take or leave meat. Bread, on the other hand, he could never live without! :)

The dining plan was actually a little rough on him. He's not much of a steak eater, but every time he saw the price of the steaks on the menu, he couldn't pass them up (well, he did on a couple of meals). We love "getting our money's worth!"

Here's part two. I'm going to try my best to get the rest done tonight, but there's a decent chance I won't get done with it until tomorrow.

Backlot Express

DH: Double Cheeseburger with French Fries, Double Chocolate Bundt Cake
Me: Grilled Vegetable Sandwich, Chocolate Mousse

We decided to try new CS at MGM during this trip. In the past, we have only eaten at ABC Commisary and I had a not so great Tabouli Wrap there on our last trip. Backlot Express was probably the best MGM CS that we ate at. DH thought that his burger was good. Nothing to get excited about, but good. My vegetable sandwich was also good, not spectacular, but I'd say above average for a CS vegetarian meal. My mousse was really good. The Chocolate Bundt Cake was a little dry.

Coral Reef

DH: Beef Skewers, Grilled Shrimp Pasta, Chocolate Wave
Me: Mixed Greens Salad, Vegetable Strudel, Chocolate Adrift

This was probably the most mixed dining experience of our trip. We loved the food and the atmosphere, but the service was HORRIBLE. We were seated on the first tier, but not against the window. We were put in a booth that was probably set back ten feet from the window. If we go here again, I will wait for a window seat. Our DD loved watching the fish at The Living Seas, so obviously, we wanted her to be able to watch the fish while we ate dinner. Because we were in a booth, we weren't (initally) given a normal highchair for her. They gave us one of those clip-on seats and it was awful. First of all, I'm one of those freaky moms who uses a highchair cover and I couldn't use that on the clip-on set, but even worse, they put the clip-on seat on an area of the table where DD's view was bad. We had the hostess move it, but I guess she didn't know how to install the seat (and neither did we since we had never used one before) and it wasn't secured properly. DD pinched her fingers (meltdown time) and then thought that it would be fun to stand on the booth seat and try to get out of the chair. We finally insisted on a normal highchair from our server.

Which leads me to our server…I believe his name was Roberto. He seemed like a very nice, very hardworking man. I'm not sure if he was overworked or what, but everything took him so much time and he kept forgetting things (like asking the chef to come out and talk to us about DD's allergy, our drinks, the bill, etc.). I don't think of DH and I normally as demanding diners or unforgiving to overworked servers, but this was really, really bad. We were just happy to finally get our bill and get out of the restaurant 2+ hours later. To make matters worse, the next night we noticed that we were short a TS credit. Turns out that Roberto charged us a TS credit for DD $4.99 kids pizza that I'm almost positive we explicitly told him that we would be paying out of pocket for. We were in a hurry to get out of there, so we didn't scrutinize the bill as closely as we should have. Anyhow, guest relations at our hotel cleared up the mixup.

Okay, on with the food. DH was gaga over his beef skewers and thought that his dessert was by far the best of the trip. I was allowed one small bite and agree that it was amazing. DH's pasta was a nice change from all of the steak that he had been eating, but he thought that it was pretty skimpy on the shrimp. My salad was very tasty. I really enjoyed the key lime dressing. The vegetable strudel was good, but a little oily actually. My dessert was also amazing. I love chocolate malt, so it was perfect for me.

Tusker House

DH: Fried Chicken Sandwich with Steak Fries, Carrot Cake
Me: Vegetable Sandwich, Chocolate Cake

I looked forward to this meal all week! Last fall, we ate here and I had this huge and wonderful vegetable sandwich on foccacia bread with delicious grilled vegetables and hummus. Yum, yum, yum! I was SO disappointed when I picked up my order and found this tiny sandwich of a few vegetables tossed with feta cheese and greek dressing in a cold pita. It didn't have a lot to it and it just tasted so pathetic compared to the old sandwich. Sigh. Anyhow, the chocolate cake was awesome (so that helped make my meal a little brighter). DH's fried chicken sandwich was good and moist. He also is a big "steak fries" fan which were served with it, so that was a plus for his meal. Carrot cake was quite good as well (although I thought that the chocolate cake was better!). We ate outside on the patio behind Tusker House. DD fell asleep shortly before we ate (on the safari ride no less!) so we were in search of a quiet place to eat.

Atmosphere: B+
Food: C- for me, A- for DH

Pizzafari

Cheese Pizza, Apple Tart

I forgot to mention earlier that we had an extra TS meal planned, so we paid OOP for our Crystal Palace lunch. As a result, we had a couple of extra CS credits. After DD woke up (almost a three hour nap that day!), we went over to Pizzafari where she and I split a cheese pizza. DH ate most of the apple tart (I had a couple of bites). Pizza was okay, but I thought that Pizza Planet was better. The apple tart was not good. I thought Pizzafari was a bad value for the dining plan. Unlike other CS restaurants with pizza, you didn't get a salad or anything with your meal. I also didn't care for the dessert options. This place was huge! We walked all the way to the back and ate outside on a patio that was facing the path going towards Camp Minnie and Mickey. We ate later (probably around 2pm), so there was nobody back there.

Thanks for the great reviews. We are a vegetarian/omnivore family as well, however I'm the omnivore and DH is the veggie. Usually a home we eat vegetarian but when we go out I over compensate and order a big juicy steak.

Subscribing here...thanks for the reviews! Since our last trip, my oldest son has become a vegetarian, so I appreciate the insight to try to make his trip as fun (and delicious) as always!

Fantastic reviews ~ Thanx for posting.
